Box plot with 5th and 95th percentiles instead of 1.5 * IQR: problems implementing an existing solution...
Hi all, I'm just getting started with R and I would appreciate some help. I'm having trouble creating a boxplot with whiskers at the 95th and 5th percentiles instead of at 1.5 * IQR. I have read the relevant documentation, and checked existing mails on this topic. I found a small modification that should work : https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2001-November/016817.html and tried to

boxplot statistics
I have read and reread the boxplot and the boxplot stats page, and I still cannot understand how and what boxplot shows. I realize that this might be due to me not knowing enough statistics, but anyway... First, how does boxplot determine the size of the box? And is the line inside the box the mean or the median (or something completely different?) And how does it determine how long out the

how to customize boxplot
Dear List, I'd like to make boxplots of a large number of observations (+/- 20.000), which are distributed log-normal and right skewed. The problem is that with standard boxplots a too large number of observations are displayed as outliers. I also tried to display the log of the observations, but even then there are to may outliers to my taste. So I'd like to change the standard IQR box

box and whisker (PR#13821)
In a Box and Whisker plot, I thought that when there are outliers both abov= e and below the whiskers, then the whiskers should both be the same length = (plus or minus 1.5 times the inter-quartile range). If you look at the plot for SilwoodWeather on p.155 of The R Book you will = see that for November (month =3D 11) the upper whisker is shorter than the = lower, while for other months with

Boxplot not doing what I think it should
My box plot below is drawing its upper whisker all the way to the last point, instead of showing the point as an outlier. Am I misunderstanding, or is it a bug? Help(boxplot) states for the parameter ?range? that ?this determines how far the plot whiskers extend out from the box. If range is positive, the whiskers extend to the most extreme data point which is no more than range times the

Boxplot: what is shown by default?
hi, i'm using /"boxplot()"/ to show some data: x <- c(0.99, 0.97, 0.91, 0.72, 1.00, 0.99, 1.02, 0.90, 0.91, 0.90, 1.02, 0.90, 1.35, 1.01, 0.92) boxplot(x) is it correct when i say: /"Boxes represent interquartile ranges (IQRs); bold horizontal lines, medians; whiskers, lowest and highest values still within 1.5 x IQR; open circles, outliers."? /thanks in advance

A two-part question about box-percentile plots, bpplot(): (1) yaxt="n" doesn't seem to work (2) how to display mean values
Dear List, I have a two-part question related to bpplot(), a box-percentile plot function in the Hmisc package. Take the example given in the Help for bpplot(), for instance. (1) How does one set but not draw the y-axis? What I did was, bpplot(... , yaxt="n"), but that apparently does not work (though it works for boxplot()). (2) How does one display the mean value of each variable

Impaired boxplot functionality - mean instead of median
Hello to all users and wizards. I am regulary using 'boxplot' function or its analogue - 'bwplot' from the 'lattice' library. But they are, as far as I understand, totally flawed in functionality: they miss ability to select what they would draw 'in the middle' - median, mean. What the box means - standard error, 90% or something else. What the whiskers mean -

Questions related to plotting boxplots of time series data
List, I have looked through several R books and searched the web to find answers to my questions with no results. I have a ensembles of time series data (essentially from Monte Carlo simulations) which I would like to summarize as a time series of boxplots. I don't know how to do this and I am not sure how I should structure the data to get what I want. Another related question: while

Whiskers on the default boxplot {graphics}
How are the lower/upper whiskers defined in the default version of boxplot {graphics}? I tried help(boxplot) and searching www.rseek.org, but I was unable to determine an absolute answer. I checked out the definition of boxplot according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_plot), but it also had several approaches listed for how the whiskers could be determined, so I'm just

Boxplot
bonjour, je voudrais savoir s'il serait possible de sugg?rer aux d?veloppeurs de R de proposer une option suppl?mentaire pour les moustaches, ? savoir les placer sur d1 et d9 comme c'est pr?conis? dans les programmes du secondaire en France, option du style boxplot (serie,range=91) par exemple... i would like to know if it is possible to have (with the agrement of developpers)

Lattice box percentile plot
Dear Nabble. I am trying to draw a box percentile plot with trellis using the panel in Hmisc. I really want to colour the plots in. I can alter several of features of the plot by changing the trellis par settings but I just can’t fill the shape in. Here is some example code which alters line colour and dot symbol: require(lattice) require(Hmisc)

help understanding box plots
Another naive stats question. I'm trying to better understand what boxplots are telling me. I think what I see is the median and the boundaries of the 1st and 3rd quartiles. The whiskers represent the range of the data unless there are points which are outside "range" (default: 1.5) times the distance from the median to that quartile. Is that right? I've read the

Boxplot: quartiles/outliers
For boxplot(), is it possible to pass in a parameter to change the default way that the 1st and 3rd quartiles are computed? (specifically, I'd like to use type 6 described in the quantile function). Also, what are the options for how outliers are computed, and how can one change them? Thank you [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Modifying whiskers in boxplots?
Hello, I know this has been covered on here before, but as a complete novice, I need a little more guidance. I would like to produce boxplots with the whiskers extending to the 10 and 90th percentiles. I found this code: myboxplot.stats <- function (x, coef = NULL, do.conf = TRUE, do.out = TRUE) { nna <- !is.na(x) n <- sum(nna) stats <- quantile(x, c(.1,.25,.5,.75,.9), na.rm

boxplot with average instead of median
I really like the ease of use with the boxplot command in R. I would rather have a boxplot that shows the average value and the standard deviation then the median value and the quartiles. Is there a way to do this? Chad Junkermeier, Graduate Student Dept. of Physics West Virginia University PO Box 6315 210 Hodges Hall Morgantown WV 26506-6315 phone: (304) 293-3442 ext. 1430 fax: (304)

box-and-whisker plots based on summary not data
Hi, Is it possible to produce box-and-whisker plots given that I have the median, interquartile and 5/95th centile values, but not the data from which they come? It seems that it ought to be possible to coerce bxp to do what I want, but I can't quite see how. more boxplot questions
Hello, I have a couple more questions about boxplots. In the books I've read on statistics (I'm not a statistics expert but just a poor engineer trying to help his wife with the analysis of the data she gathered for her medieval history PhD), I seen two kinds of box plots: one using quartiles to determine the height of the rectangles and whiskers which is what the standard R boxplot does,
