: Update on R GUI's ??
Awhile back there was a lengthy discussion regarding R GUI's for teaching, etc. I was wondering if anyone has set up the web page which was to be dedicated to this issue. Philippe Grosjean had the idea of creating a R-GUI projects page. Also, is anyone using a "R-GUI" (for windows) for teaching basic statistics to students doing applied science degrees? Something based perhaps

re: GUI's for teaching
Hi, Have you seen the tcltk package? I believe it is a better option than the one you outline in your message. Why develop a Windows-only GUI? Maybe in a few years your teaching department will give up Windows for Linux (for the reasons you wrote about R: it is free, advanced, and adaptable). There is an article in R News (vol.1, n?3) by Peter Dalgaard on the tcltk package, and the latter

re: GUI's for teaching
Dear All, This is a question to sound out possibilities. I am with the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Western Australia, representing a few of the more statistically minded in the faculty. Essentially, there have been problems in the past with software support, changing over statistical software, and paying lots of money for it. In R you have an advanced

SPSS, social science majors, and R
Hi Roland and folks: Roland's and Susanna's comments were very interesting. I think we need to keep in mind that unlike SPSS, R is more than a statistical package. It's a tool. SPSS does indeed make life easy, particularly for data preprocessing (or data "cleaning"), something that is perhaps not advisable using R (the current versions). Also, I think it's a myth that R

DOE teaching suggestions?
Dear R People: I will be teaching an undergraduate Design of Experiments class in the Spring Semester. It will be very much an applied course. My question, please: has anyone used R for a course like this, please? I've tried Rcmdr for a regression course and just plain command line for a time series course. Should I use Rcmdr, or teach them to use the command line, OR is there something

LLVM possible projects
@Vivek, thanks for your answer and especially these links! I just want to add two more though I am not sure if they are useful here: - Some slides [0] that explain the general structure of LLVM and LLVM-IR I used in our compiler class last year [0]. - Examples that build LLVM-IR "from scratch". These were designed to help students to build an LLVM-IR frontend for their AST.

re: GUI's for teaching
Definitely 2 camps on this issue; so why not compromise with a drop-down menu for the most frequently used processes, the user responds with the necessary parameters for his choice, and R then writes the source statements on the terminal and executes them. The user follows the familiar gui procedure, is thereby automatically introduced to the command statements involved, and R's

Input appreciated: R teaching idea + a way to improve R-wiki
Hi all, I will be teaching a graduate-level course on R at CU Boulder next semester. I have a teaching idea that might also help improve the R wiki page... I wanted to know what you all thought of it and wanted to solicit some advice about doing it. During the latter part of the course, students will choose a topic of interest (e.g., hierarchical linear modeling), and show how to achieve it in

Resources for teaching R
Greetings! Soon I will begin teaching 2 courses two students who have never met R or SPLUS before. I'm just wondering if list members are aware of any on-line lecture notes about R or using R to teach statistics apart from the Venables & Smith notes? One drawback to R is its name, which is not very useful as a search string in internet search engines! Murray Jorgensen, Department of

R for Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial , Civil, etc.)
Hi useRs, In trying to take R to engineering undergraduate students, I have been looking for context that would make R more accessible to the said audience. Though R is primarily a statistical tool, I would want to demonstrate the use of R for certain engineering courses (Design of Machine Elements - gear design, ball bearings, etc.) which would generate interest in it and provide students a way

Using R in a university course: dealing with proposal comments
Hi All, I am scheduled to teach a graduate course on research methods in health sciences at a university. While drafting the course proposal, I decided to include a brief introduction to R, primarily with an objective to enable the students to do data analysis using R. It is expected that enrolled students of this course have all at least a formal first level introduction to quantitative methods
