highlight overlapping region of two densities
Hi all.
I would like to highlight overlapping regions of two densities and I could
not find a way to do it.
Here is the sample code:
myd <- c(2,4,5, 4,3,2,2,3,3,3,2,3,3,4,2,4,3,3,3,2,2.5,
2, 3,3, 2.3, 3, 3, 2, 3)
myd1 <- myd-2
plot(range(density(myd)$x, density(myd1)$x), range(density(myd)$y,
density(myd1)$y), type = "n")
lines(density(myd), col=1, lwd=4)

Compare two distance matrices
Hi all,
I am trying to compare two distance matrices with R. I would like to
create a XY plot of these matrices and do some linear regression on
it. But, I am a bit new to R, so i have a few questions (I searched in
the documentation with no success).
The first problem is loading a distance matrix into R. This matrix is
the output of a the Phylip program Protdist and lookes like this:

TFTP prefix in pxelinux.0 ?
Hello,
I wonder if it is possible to change pxelinux.0's tftp prefix...
I want to setup a repository like that:

| `-- pxelinux.0
|-- dist2
| |-- pxelinux.cfg

The file /pxelinux.cfg/default would contain something like that:

efficiently finding the integrals of a sequence of functions
Hi folks,
I am having a question about efficiently finding the integrals of a list of
functions. To be specific,
here is a simple example showing my question.
Suppose we have a function f defined by
f<-function(x,y,z) c(x,y^2,z^3)
Thus, f is actually corresponding to three uni-dimensional functions
f_1(x)=x, f_2(y)=y^2 and f_3(z)=z^3.
What I am looking for are the integrals of these three

References of R in use
Dear R-users and expeRts,
can anyone provide me (and others as well, of course) with reference of
companies, scientific labs and/or schools where R is being used?
Or does some (even unofficial) list of comanies etc. where R is being used
exist?
I tried to find such an information on R's homepage and on a FAQ page, but
unsuccesfully.
(Of course, searching through this r-help conference one

which coefficients for a gam(mgcv) model equation?
Dear users,
I am trying to show the equation (including coefficients from the model
estimates) for a gam model but do not understand how to.
Slide 7 from one of the authors presentations (gam-theory.pdf URL:
http://people.bath.ac.uk/sw283/mgcv/) shows a general equation
log{E(yi )} = ?+ ?xi + f (zi ) .
What I would like to do is put my model coefficients and present the
equation used. I am an

R numerical integration
Hi all,
Is there any other packages to do numerical integration other than the
default 'integrate'?
Basically, I am integrating:
integrate(function(x) dnorm(x,mu,sigma)/(1+exp(-x)),-Inf,Inf)$value
The integration is ok provided sigma is >0.
However, when mu=-1.645074 and sigma=17535.26
It stopped working. On the other hand, Maple gives me a value of
0.5005299403.
It is an

Fitting distributions
Are there any functions in R for fitting distributions? In particular, I
would like to fit the weibull and extreme-value distributions when:
i) the data are given and the maximum likelihood estimates are required;
ii) the sample moments are available but the complete data record is not
(so moment estimates are required).
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Reading multiple files into R
I want to read data from a number of files into R.
Reading individual files one by one requires writing enormous amount of
code that will look something like the following.
****************
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-01vc.dbf")->dist1
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-02vc.dbf")->dist2
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-03vc.dbf")->dist3

Different behaviour of data()
Dear List,
I frequently use the
data()
function to load csv files (with separator ";") into R session,
typically
data(myfile)
loads myfile.csv from my working/data directory into R.
Now, in 1.4.0 version, everything works as expected, but with one
difference:
The values readed in older versions in "num" mode are now readed as "int"
mode,
converting the values

piece wise functions
Hello,
Apologies if this question has already arised, hope you can
help me to the find the solution to this or point the place to look at.
I have a multidimensional piece-wise regression linear problem, i.e.
to find not only the regression coefficients for each "interval" but
also the beginning and ends of the intervals.
To simplify it to the one dimensional case and
two intervals,

Error with grad() for numerical differential of a function
Hello everyone,
I have programmed a function and, among other things, it has to compute the differential of a function. I have been using the function grad() and I have programmed some simulated studies. I have testes with 72,576 different combinations of the initial values and now I got an error in only 4 situations.
The error comes from the function grad() and I don't understand why. This

Generalized Lambda
Anyone know of a package for numerically estimating lambda(3) and lambda(4)
using location, position, skew and kurtosis estimates. I have a distribution
and would like to use the gld package to do some simulations of the
distribution, but need the lambda estimates to feed into gld.
I have a program in Maple, which I may convert to C code for use in R, but
before moving down that road I

segmentation fault
I'm experiencing segmentation faults from time to time
that abruptely end my R sesion. In such cases, is there
any way to recover the work done? (i.e., is there
any temporal file that I could use?)
Thanks

newbie: new_data_frame <- selected set of rows
Hello,
this is probably trivial but I failed to find this
particular snippet of code.
What I got:
my_dataframe (contains say a 40k rows and 4 columns)
distances (vector with euclidean distances between a
query vector and each of the rows of my_dataframe)
What I do:
after scaling data my_dataframe I calculate distances.
order them then extract top five hits

Math symbols in email - not completely OT
What is the generally accepted way to put certain math symbols into plain
text email?
For example, how does one convey the "is exactly equal to", "is
approximately equal to", and "delta" symbols in a standard text-based (e.g.
Courier) font?

plot
Hello!
I use the version 1.4.0 for Windows. I have made boxplots but only half of
the symbols (three letters each) show up on the X-axis? How t can one
change their size or orientation so that all show up? I attach the pdf file
to illustrate better the problem.
