latex warning
Dear all,
I am getting an R CMD check warning about the PDF manual. I am having a
hard time finding out what is wrong, here is the log of the Rd2pdf call.
The full check (and other) log is at
https://api.travis-ci.org/jobs/46373922/log.txt?deansi=true if anybody is
interested, and the package itself is here:
https://github.com/metacran/r-builder/tree/bintex/rbuildertest
Thanks, Best,

Can't get Sweave syntax highlighting with Emacs
I can't get Emacs to automatically do syntax highlighting of
Sweave files. I have followed Friedrich's suggestion for code
to insert into my .emacs file. The complete section from my .emacs
file is given below. When I load a *.Snw file, font is white until I press
M-x, then the first code and document chunks get highlighted, but not
the rest of the file. Latex and Noweb menus are

Setting up Xemacs + Sweave
Dear list,
I have tried to setup my Xemacs for use with Sweave, which I indend to learn.
I have followed the instructions in the Sweave FAQ, that is to say, I put
(defun Rnw-mode ()
(require 'ess-noweb)
(noweb-mode)
(if (fboundp 'R-mode)
(setq noweb-default-code-mode 'R-mode)))
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.Rnw\\'" . Rnw-mode))

Using \leq for <= in Rd files
Hi,
When writing formulae in Rd files I use \leq to get a less-than-or-equal-to
sign, as this is what the LaTeX references I consulted suggested. This works
correctly for the PDF output (Rcmd Rd2dvi.sh --pdf), however when the Rd
file is converted to text or html this command is converted to "<=q".
A workaround is to use \le instead of \leq which works with my LaTeX
distribution

Sweave and Xemacs on Windows2000?
Hallo!
Trying to configure Xemacs to work with .snw files on windows 2000. Tried to do it how it is described in the FAQ for Sweaves.
When starting xemacs with and Snw file
*ESS* buffer contains hundrets of lines and the few last ones.

Working comfortably with (X)Emacs + Sweave
Dear List,
I am trying to become more familiar with Sweave at the moment, beacuse
I am convinced that it will eventually make my life easier. However,
I have not found anything relevant in the mail archives about the
following problem.
Both the article in R-News and the Sweave FAQ suggest that Emacs would
be a great development environment for working with Sweave. So far, it
doesn't seem to

pesky \usage-warnings with R CMD check
I?m in the process of preparing a package for CRAN.
The package is called ?exportR? and since it really just consists of one function, I found it natural to call it ?exportR? too.
The function returns a function that does the actual job, but it is set up to work in different ways, depending on the arguments given to its creator. In short:
library( exportR )
exporter <- exportR( the, arguments

Misuse of $<matn expressions>$ in Rd files
'Writing R Extensions' tells you that $ needs to be escaped in Rd files
outside \code and similar. So I was surprised to find that ca 80 CRAN
packages have constructions like (from ISwR)
\item{\code{folate}}{
a numeric vector, folate concentration ($\mu$g/l).
}
This does not render sensibly in non-latex conversions, and it is what we
have \eqn{} for.
That $ needs to be

[OT] getting a ~ character in LaTeX
I am writing course notes in LaTeX. In the part where I am describing
model-fitting functions in R I want to use a ~ character inline. If I
am displaying an example of R code in its own environment I use the
alltt environment, which protects the ~ character. I have forgotten
how to protect the ~ when I am writing something like

function to convert lm model to LaTeX equation
Dear list,
I've tried several times to wrap my head around the Design library,
without much success. It does some really nice things, but I'm often
uncomfortable because I don't understand exactly what it's doing.
Anyway, one thing I really like is the latex.ols() function, which
converts an R linear model formula to a LaTeX equation.
So, I started writing a latex.lm() function

The Rd file reads:

optim or nlminb for minimization, which to believe?
I have constructed the function mml2 (below) based on the likelihood function described in the minimal latex I have pasted below for anyone who wants to look at it. This function finds parameter estimates for a basic Rasch (IRT) model. Using the function without the gradient, using either nlminb or optim returns the correct parameter estimates and, in the case of optim, the correct standard

Suggestion for quantile.default()
I'm not sure who is responsible for quantile(), but I assume they read
this list. Ivan Frohne and I have produced a revision of the
quantile.default() function which enables the computation of alternative
sample quantile definitions. The code and .Rd file are attached.
This enables the user to produce quantiles that are equivalent to those
in various statistics package. There is a type

Using MathJax in R's help system
Hi,
I am doing a small experiment to test if I can use
MathJax ( official site: http://www.mathjax.org )
in R's html help pages (i.e. options(help_type='html'))
and it seems working with some minor modifications.
The screenshot (rendered by Firefox 4.0 beta and with STIX fonts) of
the help page in html format with MathJax enabled is at the following

I have the following in a .Rd file:
\eqn{\mbox{coef} = c(\mbox{coef}[1],\ldots, \mbox{coef}[n]) }
{coef = c(coef[1], coef[2], \dots, coef[n])}
However, both arguments come out in the latex file!
Whats happening?
