Power to detect change (poisson)
Hi All (first timer here, be gentle!!)
I'm trying to extract the residual variance out of a glm with poisson data
to
conduct power and sample size to detect a change over years.
I have equal reps within year (for now).
Is the residual variance just the grand mean of the original count data, or
something trickier?
glm.Male_glm(M~year*strata,family=poisson,offset=dur)

Non-linear random variables
I have a fisheries Ricker stock-recruitment non-linear model which I am
trying to code up in R (after failing in MATLAB). There are two fixed
parameters and a random environmental effect that is linked to a first order
lagged correlation fixed parameter.
Are there any examples of fitting this model I could follow?

State space modelling
Hi, I'm new to R and am trying to implement a state-space model, and do some
simulations looking at how well it works. Does anyone have an example I
could use as a template? I'm having trouble working out where to start, and
haven't been able to find anything similar in the help files or on the web.
My example is a surplus production fisheries model, so something similar to

It may depend on which decomposition method you are using, princomp uses
eigen whereas prcomp use svd. What does Statistica use?

Bootstrapping
HI All,
I am trying to analyse the results of a heap of samples, to determine how
many samples are required to meet a defined confidence interval.
I checked out the R manual for bootstrapping and re-sampling methods, but
did not find anything. Are there any contributed procedures that deal with
this?
thanks,

Redirecting Output to Clipboard
Hi R Gurus,
I have a question that some of you may have dealt with before.
I would redirect output to the clipboard, rather than to the screen.
Is this possible? Is a function already written for it, or is it just
an option in print?
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, thanks to all those who have helped develop this great software,
or who make
the effort here to support the user-base.

Sans Serif Fonts?
Hi All,
I am preparing a few plots for publication. Unfortunately the journal
requires figures to have all text in a sans serif fonts.
I realise that there is support for the use of Hershey vector fonts in the
function TEXT,
but how do I get the text on axes to be sans serif?
For example, the labels and axis values produced from this line of code:

Re:Importing SPSS Data Entry data files
On 16 Apr, Unung Istopo Hartanto asked about using R library 'foreign' to import SPSS Data Entry data files. SPSS Data Entry is an application that allows for the creation of formatted data entry forms (as does EpiInfo, Epidata and CSPro (all free downloads)). As such it creates the usual SPSS data files, but adds forms information, which the 'foreign' package does not know how

S's plclust and R's hclust
Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how to implement the argument "unit" in R's plclust
function ? I used to use Splus where this argument exists but it has not
been implemented in R's plclust. The reason why I switched from Splus to
R is that Ward's method is not implemented for S's hclust whereas it is
implemented for R's hclust. What I would need is S's plclust

Hello,
I'm doing a pca analysis and get unrotated PCA results (using "pca").
I then used "varimax" to rotate the PCs,
vload <- varimax(cproj,normalize=TRUE,eps=1e-5) #cproj is the
"loadings" from "pca"
and calculate the score coefficients with:
coef <- solve(correlation matrix of original data) %*% (vload$loadings)
Then calculate the

Hi,
I'm wanting to produce a filled contour plot (easy), and overlay the
Australian coastline ( ie oz(add=True)).
That is,
filled.contour(longs, lats, field)
oz(add=T)
HOWEVER, the axes of the "filled contour" and the "oz map" do not
automatically align themselves with each other.
ie my contours are not correctly positioned over the map.
HOWEVER, if I just plot

Grouped Regression
HI All R Gurus,
Please reply directly to this email if you have a suggestion, as I am not
currently an R-help member.
I would like to complete a non-linear regression with groups. Having gone
down the path of completing such
things under GENSTAT, I would prefer to do it with R.
My example data set is...

RODBC sqlSave does not append the records to a DB2 table
I am running R version 2.9.2 on Windows XP OS with RODBC version Version:
1.3-0.
Has anyone out there in the R user community successfully appended records
to a DB2 table on a remote database using the sqlSave function in the RODBC
package? (or by any other means from R?)
I posed a similar question a few months ago and unfortunately, did not
receive a response. I was hoping recent upgrades to

samba and writing through hard/symbolic links
hi everyone,
i feel like this problem should have come up a thousand times before but can't seem to find anything
about on google. i am no expert and i don't know much samba lingo but i hope you understand me.
If you open a symlink (or hard link for that matter) in windows (2000) over samba, say a blah.doc
file, which looks like

More checking shows that closing a search window on
Windows in the middle of it's search doesn't stop the

seems as if the server is stuck searching.
In an attempt to verify, I created a share on Win2k,
