change directory?
Please pardon a novice use question.
Is there any way under the Win32 version of R (1.3.0)
to change the working directory from the GUI command
line? I see the "Change dir" entry under the File
menu, but haven't found a corresponding command.
Thanks in advance,

unary "-" on logicals
"An Introduction to R" says that arithmetic operators
coerce logical vectors to numeric vectors. This doesn't
seem to be true for unary "-" however:
> x <- 1:10
> p1 <- (x > 5)
> p2 <- (-p1)
> is.logical(p2)
[1] TRUE
> is.numeric(p2)
[1] FALSE
Since "==" always does binary comparison, this can lead to
some bizarre behavior:
> p1

sample() help
The documentation for sample() describes the optional "prob"
argument as "A vector of probabilities of obtaining the
elements of the vector being sampled".
Both run time behavior and source code (routine FixupProb)
suggest that "prob" can be a vector of non-negative,
relative weights (i.e. not necessarily normalized).
Should the help be updated to reflect this?

if/else at 1.3.1
Under NT with 1.3.1
if (x == 1) {
cat("Saw x=1\n");
} else {
cat("Saw x!=1\n");
}
works as expected, but
if (x == 1) {
cat("Saw x=1\n");
}
else {
cat("Saw x!=1\n");
}
is currently giving me a syntax error on the "else" line.
Apparently the parser considers the if statement to have
ended as soon as it sees first closing brace, unless

problem installing quadprog
When I try to build/install the quadprog package under R1.50 and NT4
it seems to have trouble finding blas routines. I'm currently using the
generic blas routines, rather than ATLAS or some other tuned implementation:

...
gcc --shared -s -o quadprog.dll quadprog.def quadprog.a quadprog_res.o -Lc:/a

Followup on quadprog installation
Oops... just realized there were a couple mistakes in the question
I posted regarding installation of quadprog:
1) The gcc command line is shown wrapped to the next line.
Please ignore this.
2) In addition to adding a -Lc:/apps/rw1050/bin option to the
command line, I also added -lRblas.
Thanks,

Problem using -v within rsync transfer.
Hello,
We have used rsync on a mirroring application successfully for just over a
year. After our upgrade to 2.4.6, however, the process started failing
about 50% of the time. The nature of our failure was that the rsync
processes on the remote system would die with no error message, leaving the
local system processes hung. I have netstat and trace output for available
if needed, but I see

RMySQL and Blob
Dear R experts,
Does RMySQL package handle Blob datatype in a MySQL database? Blob can represent an image, a sound or some other
large and complex binary objects. In an article published by R-database special interest group, named "A common database interface (DBI)" (updated June 2003), it's mentioned in "open issues and limitations" that "We need to carefully plan

aov help
Please pardon an extremely naive question. I see related earlier
posts, but no responses which answer my particular question. In
general, I'm very confused about how to do variance decomposition with
random and mixed effects. Pointers to good tutorials or texts would
be greatly appreciated.
To give a specific example, page 193 of V&R, 3d Edition, illustrates

cannot allocate vector
Hi,
I'm having trouble with glmmPQL.
I'm fitting a 2 level random intercept model, with 90,000 cases and about 330 groups. I'm unable to get any results on the full data set. I can get it to work if I sample down to about 30,000 cases. But for models with N's much larger than that I get the following warning message:

Rsync hang on HP-UX 10.20
Hi,
We downloaded the latest rsync 2.5.6 source code and compiled it on HP-UX for both 10.20 and 11.x. Rsync runs fine if we run it from the command line on both platforms. But after we put rsync command into a HP Software Distributor package configure script (just a shell script with rsync command in it) and run swinstall, which will get installation bits including the configure script, put the

Problems Using the MultipleUsersOnConnection Registry Key in WTS NT4
Hi.
I am running SAMBA 2.0.7 on HP-UX 11.00 and HP-UX 10.20.
I have tried adding the MultipleUsersOnConnection registry key onto my
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4 Terminal Server Edition servers, running with
Service Pack 6. After I make this change in the registry and reboot my WTS
servers all my samba connections from the servers are still being made with
one process instead of being split

data management question
Hi all,
I have a data management question. I am using an panel dataset read into
R as a dataframe, call it "ex". The variables in "ex" are: id year x
id: a character string which identifies the unit
year: identifies the time period
x: the variable of interest (which might contain NAs).
Here is an example:
> id <- rep(c("A","B","C"),2)

Winbind on HPUX 11, some small progress
Hi All,
Well, i've managed to enable some debugging in syslog, I had to put in
/etc/syslog.conf
;*.debug
on the syslog line.
So at least I have an error which is being returned into syslog from
winbind.
This is what I get from winbind
Feb 4 21:13:17 coastdr pam_winbind[20753]: Verify user `lonnie'

Winbind - Why won't you authenticate???
Well, I managed to get Samba 2.2.3 up and running on our Solaris 8 machine.
I installed with the winbind option and everything went though just find.
I was able to join the NT domain and now I can do a wbinfo -u "and get a
domain user list as well as a "wbinfo -g and get a group list. For some
reason though, the authentication isn't working.
I tried to "wbinfo -a" and
