foreign characters in R plots
Hi, I am sorry to bother you with such a (presumably) simple question, but I have spent a couple of hours browsing the net and R documentation and came up with no answer to it. My problem is that I need to use Latin2 (ISO8859-2) characters in my plots. Adding an encoding="..." parameter to the postscript function does not solve the problem, as the characters still don't show up.

cartograms in R?
Q: Has anyone implemented cartograms [**] in R? A search on the R site turned up https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-geo/2005-December/000698.html which led to http://www.okada.jp.org/RWiki/index.php?cmd=read&page=Rmap%A4%F2%BB% C8%A4%C3%A4%BF%C3%CF%BF%DE%C9%BD%BC%A8&word=Rmap#content_1_35 which has (one form of) a cartogram as a PNG, but which doesn't seem to have code. plotting dendrograms from cluster analyses
Hi all, I have a bit of a newbie question here that I hope y'all can help with. I've run a cluster analysis using hclust on about 500 objects (using R1.3 under Win 2000). The problem is that the tips of the dendrogram are so close together on the plot that the labels overlap and are unreadable. I've used "cex" to reduce the label sizes but this isn't sufficient with so

How much can you do without native windows?
Hi, I''m running Mandrake 8.0 and I''d like to be able to run some windows applications without using windows at all. I suppose the main thing that stops me ditching windows completely is my children not being able to run their various games and educational software (e. g. domU lifecycles, xenstore, and UUIDs [not necessarily 128-bit ones]
At least from the ''xm'' commands'' interface, it looks like domU''s just disappear after an ''xm destroy'', which I''ve been using to cut turn off the virtual power switches of domU''s. Is this by design? I''m trying to think of a good way to identify a domU throughout its lifecycle, which for me goes all the way from

CellarTracker is not necessarily representative of the broad
The one thing that the authors of the paper don't happen to devote much attention to, which I think is at least as interesting as all their other findings, is that in general, the greater wine drinking population doesn't think wines are as good as the major critics do. If I am understanding the data correctly, in all cases the community rating was below all of the critics

perception of graphical data
Hello, I apologize that this is off-topic. I am seeking information on perception of graphical data, in an effort to improve the plots I produce. Would anyone point me to literature reviews in this area? (Or keywords to try on google?) Is this located somewhere near cognitive science, psychology, human factors research? For example, some specific questions I have are: I recall as a child

Rcartogram package - error message
I am trying to install two R packages to produce cartograms like in the work of Gastner and Newman: http://www.pnas.org/content/101/20/7499.full.pdf but I have a problem installing Rcartogram and rdyncall packages. Both are not available in CRAN and have to be installed from archivea and produce errors: > install.packages("C:/Users/Milena/Downloads/*Rcartogram*_0.2-2.tar.gz", >

Seeking pointers to various regression techniques with R?
Hi all, Could you please point me to good materials on various tricks/intuitions/techniques of regression, and hopefully in R? For example, what does lm(y~ x * w - 1) mean vs. lm(y ~ x/w -1 ) vs. lm (y ~ x:w-1), etc... I just found that even simple linear regression is not that simple and there are a lot of tricks/techniques in using them... Hopefully I can find good materials on these! Thank

basic question
Dear R users, Up to now, I only used precompiled packages. As I am working on vegetation ecology, I would be interested in using a package not stored by CRAN called labdsv_0.9-1.tar.gz and developped by Dave Roberts at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (unfortunately I did not find any corresponding .zip file). Although I tried to follow the proposed guidelines to

"humanizing" model attributes presentation
Given a field in database defined as "discount_rate numeric(3,1)" I found it not very usable for presenting it directly. For example, if there''s a value 5.00 it will render in <%= text_field ''model'', ''discount_rate %> as "0.5E1" which is not very friendly to user. All I do is that I write kind of proxy accessors (prefixing with

Want To Listen To Chad Fowler''s Keynote Presentation?
Chad Fowler gave two keynote presentations at CUSEC 2006 in January. The second one he gave was entitled "Rails is Boring and Ruby is a Toy" and is available through the SOENlive podcast. For those handful who might of not heard of Chad Fowler yet, he is the author of "Rails Recipes" which is presently available as a beta book. (Great book, you should get it out)
