Seeing the definition of a function
Dear all,
I was trying to see how the function 'confint' is defined. Doing
> confint
function (object, parm, level = 0.95, ...)
UseMethod("confint")
<environment: namespace:stats>
does not really enlighten me. How can I get to see the implementation (I guess it should be possible according to the general philosophy of the R project)?
Thanks in advance

R as a COM client - is it possible?
Dear all,
In S+, there are functions like
create.ole.object
call.ole.method
release.ole.object
for communicating with other programs which work as a COM server (on
Windows).
Is it possible to do something similar in R (I've studied the 'connections'
facilities, but they do not seem to work).

SAS transport files and the foreign package
Even though the FDA has no policies at all that limit our choices of statistical software, there is one defacto standard in place: reliance of the SAS transport file format for data submission (even though this format is deficient for this purpose, e.g., it does not even document value labels or units of measurement in a self-contained way). Because of the widespread use of SAS transport files in

Read.xport function in package foreign
Hi All,
Sorry that I didn't provide enough information.
I've been trying to import SAS xport files that contain multiple files
using package foreign's read.xport. I first attempted this back in 2005
and had problems. Some of files that were present in the SAS xport file
weren't being created in R. I submitted my problem to the community:

read.xport
I am trying to import data from a SAS XPORT file that contains 24 SAS files.
When I use the "read.xport" procedure only about 16 data frames (components)
are created. Any suggestions?

Using split and sapply to return entire lines
Hello,
I have a data manipulation problem that I can easily resolve by using
perl or python to pre-process the data, but I would prefer to do it
directly in R.
Given, for example:

3 Jan 16 0.3 9 6

reading version 9 SAS datasets in R
Hi,
I am trying to read a SAS version 9.1.3 SAS dataset into R (to preserve
the SAS labels), but am unable to do so (I have read in a CSV version).
I first created a transport file using the SAS code:
libname ces2 'D:\CES Analysis\Data';
filename transp 'D:\CES Analysis\Data\fadata.xpt';
/* create a transport file - R cannot read file created by proc cport */

PROC MIXED user trying to use (n)lme...
Dear R-users
Coming from a proc mixed (SAS) background I am trying to get into
the use of (n)lme.
In this connection, I have some (presumably stupid) questions
which I am sure someone out there can answer:
1) With proc mixed it is easy to get a hold on the estimated
variance parameters as they can be put out into a SAS data set.
How do I do the same with lme-objects? For example, I can see the

Crossed random effects in lme
Dear all,
In the SASmixed package there is an example of an analysis of a split-plot experiment. The model is
fm1Semi <- lme( resistance ~ ET * position, data = Semiconductor, random = ~ 1 | Grp)
where Grp in the Semiconductor dataset is defined as ET*Wafer. Is it possible to specify the grouping directly some way, e.g. like
fm1Semi <- lme( resistance ~ ET * position, data =

Windows/MAC difference (console)
Hello,
a colleague of mine uses R on his Mac and he has quite a nice feature: When
he starts writing a part of the function like "plot(" the programming is
showing him at the bottom the kind of arguments you can input to the
function. He told me that he has not installed any further stuff than the
base R program.
Is this a feature you only have in the MAC version? I really like it. I

Computer algebra in R - would that be an idea??
>From time to time people request symbolic computations beyond what D() and deriv() etc can provide. A brief look at the internet shows that there are many more or less developed computer algebra packages freely available. Therefore, I wondered if it would be an idea to try to 'integrate' one of these packages in R, which I guess can be done in more or less elegant ways... I do not know

How to handle large dataframes?
Dear all
I imported a Stata .dta file with the read.dta-function from the
foreign-package. The dataframe's dimensions are
> dim(d.apc)
[1] 15806 1300
Importing needs up to 15 min and calculations with these data are rather
slow (although I subset the data before starting analyses).
My questions are:
1. Has someone experiences importing Stata files (alternatives to
read.dta) ?

lectura de archivos en formato SAS
Hola.
Solo quiero leer algunas
variables dado que el archivo es extenso.
Muchas gracias.
Silvia.

MCLUST Covariance Parameterization.
Hello all (especially MCLUS users).
I'm trying to make use of the MCLUST package by C. Fraley and A. Raftery. My problem is trying to figure out how the (model) identifier (e.g, EII, VII, VVI, etc.) relates to the covariance matrix. The parameterization of the covariance matrix makes use of the method of decomposition in Banfield and Rraftery (1993) and Fraley and Raftery (2002) where

Improved Nelder-Mead algorithm - a potential replacement for optim's Nelder-Mead
Hi,
I have written an R translation of C.T. Kelley's Matlab version of the Nelder-Mead algorithm. This algorithm is discussed in detail in his book "Iterative methods for optimization" (SIAM 1999, Chapter 8). I have tested this relatively extensively on a number of smooth and non-smooth problems. It performs well, in general, and it almost always outperforms optim's

Understanding contents of packages
Colleagues
During the transition to R3.0.0 (OS X), one of the packages that I used -- SASxport -- did not work until I used the "type=source" option in install.packages.
This led to an adventure:
1. I downloaded the package source: SASxport_1.2.4.tar.gz
2. in the SASxport/R folder, I found all the functions that are part of the package.
I became interested in whether I could
