plotting dendrograms
Hello,
Can anyone offer any insight on graphing classification dendrograms with
the nodes marked?
plot(tree()) produces a nice tree structure but there's no acccompanying
text.
Thanks,

color key with xyplot
Dear all,
I'd like to draw a color key beside a graph drawn with xyplot (lattice
library). I am aware of the draw.colorkey function (grid library) but
don't know how to handle it. Any hint would be appreciated.

changing the ordering of leaves in a dendrogram
I'd like to change the way plot.hclust displays an hclust object. Here's
a description of how it's done now, from the R documentation of hclust:
In hierarchical cluster displays, a decision is needed at each merge
to specify which subtree should go on the left and which on the right.
Since, for n observations there are n-1 merges, there are 2^{(n-1)}

Need suggestions for nice handling of MANY plots
I have a collection of SAS code that helps people review large
amounts of data on a regular basis. It does this by using SAS's proc
gplot with a "by" statement to prepare as many as 400 (yes, 400)
separate graphs. The code is run on a remote unix host, and displayed
on the reviewer's local desktop using X11 and SAS's display manager.
The process is initiated from a web

Accurate area map projections
Hi,
Could any one point me to the projection, and parameters if necessary, that
would show each country/continent with it's area accurately refelcted on the
plot? E.g. aitoff vs. albers vs. bonne vs. cylequalearea vs. guyou - they
don't all look the same to mee but some of the documentations suggests they
are equal area? Of course this isn't my field, so I am largely guessing and

Data for use in maps()
Dear all,
I am interested in plotting maps visualizing spatial statistics in an
aggregated fashion, according to administrative boundaries.
More specifically, I have fitted a cross-section model on data regarding
Italian "counties" (province, for Italian readers) and I would like to
visualize residual behavior on a map, in order to have a first
assessment of their spatial

Installing a Package in Windows 2000
I'm using R 1.4.1 under Windows 2000 and am experiencing difficulty
installing a package. I've included an example output using Rcmd build,
but the same problem occurs with Rcmd check and Rcmd INSTALL. The error
(make[1]: /bin/sh.exe: Command not found) is not a new one - it's
referenced in readme.packages among other locations. I've placed a copy
of sh.exe in C:\bin, but it

intersecting polygons and conversion from decimal degree to km
Dear all,
1. How can I compute the intersecting area between 2 polygons ?
2. I have polygons with coordinates in decimal degrees (i.e. 13 deg 30
min = 13.5 decimal degrees). I want to compute their area and get the
results in square meters or square kiometers. Can anyone give me a
conversion coefficient or a pointer where I can find this information
(sorry for this off topic question) ?
Thanks

Couple of Questions about Classification trees
So I have 2 sets of data - a training data set and a test data set. I've been
doing the analysis on the training data set and then using predict and
feeding the test data through that. There are 114 rows in the training data
and 117 in the test data and 1024 columns in both. It's actually the same
set of data split into two. The rows are made of 5 different numbers. They

Problem with misclass function on tree classification
I am working through Tom Minka's lectures on Data Mining and am now on Day 32. The following

In order to use the functions cited I followed the instructions as follows:

Downloaded and sourced the file "tree.r"

rpart error when constructing a classification tree
I am trying to make a decision tree using rpart. The function runs very

resolution of windows metafiles
I am having trouble getting smooth-appearing curves in figures produced as
windows metafiles using R (R-1.1.1 on Windows 98). When I import them into
a word processor (either MS Word 97, or WordPerfect 9.0), the figures
appear only slightly bumpy on screen, but when printed, there is a clear
jaggedness reminiscent of aliasing. Is there a fix for this (if the answer
is "upgrade to 1.2",

Classification problem - rpart
I am performing a binary classification using a classification tree.
Ironically, the data themselves are 2483 tree (real biological ones)
locations as described by a suite of environmental variables (slope, soil
moisture, radiation load, etc). I want to separate them from an equal number
of random points. Doing eda on the data shows that there is substantial
difference between the tree and random

Problem with random number simulation
Hi this is my first post. I am trying to run a simulation for a computer
playing Von Neumann poker and adjusting it's expectation of an opponent's
behavior according to how the opponent plays. This program involves random
generation of "hands" and shifting of parameters. However, when I run the
code, no errors come up, but the program doesn't do anything. Could someone

I use knncat to make a predictive model

polygon (x, y, col=vec, border=vec, ...)
will cycle through the vec colors for fills but not for
the border colors when sending multiple polygons?

Rotated text on a regression line
Dear all,
I stumbled over a problem recently when trying to use srt with text() on a
windows device.
What I intended to do was to plot a simple regression line, and to rotate
a piece of text such that the text has the same angle as the regression
line.
However, the text is always plotted in a slightly wrong angle:

I'm adding a couple of vignettes to an existing package.
When I make a change to the sweave file, and run the check command,
