installing tree pkg on linux
I am having trouble installing the tree package on linux. I followed all the steps in section 5.2 of the FAQ http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html#How%20can%20add-on%20packages%20be%20installed%3f In particular, I typed 'R CMD INSTALL -l /home/cs/murphyk/R tree_1.0-2.tar.gz'. This created the files 'LibIndex', 'R.css' and a subdirectory called 'tree'.

organising the display in Trellis plots
Hallo, I would like to organise at my pleasure the layout of a trellis plot. Currently I have a 3x3 matrix display and 7 plots. Is it possible to choose which specific panels will stay empty? I tried index.perm to arrange the order. Then there is perm.cond which I could not understand if it can serve for my purpose since I cant really find which kind of data it accepts. Thank you for the help.

Levels number of a factor object
Hi all! How to retrieve the levels number of a factor object? See this code: groups<-gl(4,10) I want to retrieve the number of levels (4) of my object "groups" I tried groups.levels but this don't work Thanks Laurent Houdusse Analyste Programmeur

how to (combine / recode / merge) two factor.
Hi, I have a data frame with two factors, and I would like to create a new one by "combining" them. I have already a solution, but it is very "heavy", and I'm sure there is a basic function which can do the same. I tried to find it in the R-help, but without result. See the example : # just to create a dataframe f1 <- factor(rep(c("A","B"),3)) f2

vector angle
Hi everyone, I'm translating into R some programs I worked through in Matlab to calculate the angle between two vectors (very large--like 6200 rows in each vector). In Matlab, I used a series of nested for loops, because I was calculating the angles between many pairs of vectors. I know for loops are not desirable in R code, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a faster way to

vis.gam() contour plots
Greetings, I have what I hope is a simple question. I would like to change my contour interval on the vis.gam( plot.type="contour") in the mgcv package. Is this a situation where I need to modify the function or is there a default value I can change? Thanks

Couldnot open MS power point from Samba share
Hi every one, i have the problem opening MS Powerpoint 97 from samba share. the ms ppt always shows: <file name> is not correct where the file name is manged. i tried to disable manged name in samba, but the problem still happens thank you for advice. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Error in using nlevels in apply function
Dear R users, I am currently trying to create my first personnal function and use it with the apply function. The purpose of this function is to create a vector summarizing the number of levels in a given selection of data.frame columns. I tried to transpose the indexation method used by the nlevels function but it doesn't seem to work. I did not find anything uesful in the archives so

frames and formulas
I can build a tree at the command line using tr <- tree(V4 ~ ., dat) but I don't know how to build one inside a function - the following does not work foo <- function(dummy) { tr <- tree(V4 ~ ., dummy) } tr2 <- foo(dat) and produces the error Error in model.frame.default(formula = V4 ~ ., data = dummy) : Object "dummy" not found I know the solution has

overlaid filled contour plots
I'm trying to make a set of contour plots of bivariate kernel density estimates, showing three such plots overlaid, similar to this plot http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Private/Test/ridge-boot2.pdf except that I would like to have the contours *filled* (using transparent colors). To make this reproducible, I've saved the results of KernSmooth::bkde2D() in the following file:

lattice and several groups
Dear R-list, I would like to use the lattice library to show several groups on the same graph. Here's my example : ## the data f1 <- factor(c("mod1","mod2","mod3"),levels=c("mod1","mod2","mod3")) f1 <- rep(f1,3) f2 <-

Take care with codes()! (was type of representation)
Ahh yes, sorry about that. Here's the corrected snippet: # Create an Example Data Frame Containing Car x Color data carnames <- c("bmw","renault","mercedes","seat") carcolors <- c("red","white","silver","green") datavals <- round(rnorm(16, mean=10, sd=4),1) data <- data.frame(Car=rep(carnames,4),

Is glm weird or am I?
Hi, I've written a script that checks all bivariate correlations for variables in a matrix. I'm now trying to run a logistic regression on each pair (x,y) where y is a factor with 2 levels. I don't know how (or whether I want) to try to fathom what's up with glm. What I wrote is attached. Here's what I get. *****************************************************

type of representation
Hi I have some data that i want to plot but i don't find how to do it. I have car types (bmw, renault, mercedes, seat ...), colors and a number for each car type-color relation.I want to come up with a matrix representation of cars vs colors where in each intersection i could set a dot proportional in size to my third variable. Can anybody give me a clue of hoe to come up with such

Lattice 3d coordinate transformation
Hello List! I asked this before (with no solution), but maybe this time... I'm trying to project a surface to the XY under a 3d cloud using lattice. I can project contour lines following the code for fig 13.7 in Deepayan Sarkar's "Lattice, Multivariate Data Visualization with R", but it fails when I try to "color them in" using panel.levelplot. ?utilities.3d says there

different randomForest performance for same data
Hello, I came across a problem when building a randomForest model. Maybe someone can help me. I have a training- and a testdataset with a discrete response and ten predictors (numeric and factor variables). The two datasets are similar in terms of number of predictor, name of variables and datatype of variables (factor, numeric) except that only one predictor has got 20 levels in the training

lineplot.CI problem
Hi List, I have a problem plotting data using the lineplot.CI command in the sciplot package. I want to plot the data of 2 experimental cases using different lines (traces). Time is on the X-axis. The tricky thing is that the data collection in the second case started later than for the first case. This is to say: the first n data points for the second case are missing. So far so good. However,

persuade tabulate function to count NAs in a data frame
Hi, I'd like to ask you a question again. It is basically about data frames, NAs and tabulate function. I have this data frame. I already used this in one of the previous questions of mine. It intentionally looks this simple, my real 'df' dataframe is much bigger actually and again, I am not willing to annoy anyone with huge databases... So, my database: id
