I can use a submit option to get the form parameters in a

A dumb question on extracting a value from a hash
Hi,
I have the following code fragment;
@comm_type = Communication.find_by_sql(''select id from
communication_types where upper(description) = "EMAIL"'')
Which results in
>> @comm_type
=> [#<Communication:0x39a0f60 @attributes={"id"=>"4"}>]
But when I try to test an ActiveREcord against this it doesn''t work;

Newbie Q: Controllers and lookup tables - when to initialise
Howdy Gang,
in a major controller that has many methods using the same lookup tables
for option choices and such, what is the life expectancy of the list
instances. Is it useful to set these up in the controller initialize
method - or is that utterly dumb?
Cheers,

Unix/NT file conversion problems
Hi
We are having some problems - the majority of our files require ascii
transfers between our unix servers and PCs. They are however being
transferred as binary for some reason even though they are just plain
text files. This means (when going from unix to pc) the files come down
without a carriage return at the end of lines. And when going from pc to
unix they end up with ^M on the end of each

I have been trying to open data that I have saved in an excel spread sheet. I saved it as a csv. Then I tried using the read.csv command. However, everytime I do this--
diseasedat<-read.csv("M:/sloan/R/disease/disease.csv", sep=, header = TRUE, fill= TRUE)--
I get an error message:
Error in file(file, "r") : unable to open connection

simple tbf rate clamping issues
Hello,
I was attempting to throttle egress traffic to a specific rate using a
tbf. As a starting point I used an example from the LARTC howto, which
goes:
tc qdisc add dev eth1 root tbf rate 220kbit latency 50ms burst 1540
I then attempt a large fetch from another machine via wget (~40 megs)
and the rate was clamped down to about 12Kbytes/s. As this seemed too
much, I gradually increased

partial association model
my last post was filtered,so I post it again with another title.
If I do not make a mistake,the partial association model is an
extension of log-linear model.I read a papers which gives an example
of it.(Sloane and Morgan,1996,An Introduction to Categorical Data
Analysis,Annual Review of Sociology.22:351-375) Can R fit such partial
association model?

adding an onclick option to link_to method
Hello,
I''m trying to use the rail link_to to open a popup window and then
print the popup window at the same time. Is there a way to add
another "onclick" option to tell the popup to print? I know how to do
this in javascript but not sure how to use the rails help to do it. I
also am aware that the link_to_function method is used to call a
javascript function.

HOW DO I populate options from previous option click
Hi,
I have a form with three drop down option lists. Currently each of these
contain full listings as instantiated in the controller on entering
the edit action. What I would like to do is filter the second list based
on what the user selected on the first and the third filtered to reflect
the second.
For example I have major_role, role and person_in_role = role is a
subset of major_role

encoding/decoding example
Hello ,
I saw that in open source projects which use speex , like sweep and
linphone ,
(there are links in speex website to these projects) the encoding/decoding
process is done using vorbis/ogg.
(The encoded files which are produced has , for example, "ogg" header).
Is there anywhere examples using speex library for encoding and decoding
raw files with no "ogg" header?

ZFS Evil Tuning Guide
Tuning should not be done in general and Best practices
should be followed.
So get very much acquainted with this first :

Then if you must, this could soothe or sting :

So drive carefully.
