Code for Hodrick-Prescott Filter
Has anyone written any code for the Hodrick-Prescott filter? I have a some
uncompiled FORTRAN code from Ed Prescott but I'd like to save myself some
programming time if possible. Thanks for your help.

Code for Hodrick-Prescott Filter: Special Case of smooth. spline?
I've had a play with this and, due to my own short-comings, remain none the
wiser.
In particular, I'm not sure what value of 'spar' is consistent with the
magic lambda=1/1600 for quarterly data.
I initially interpreted spar as lambda and tried setting spar=1/1600. This
results in almost no smoothing while spar=1600 causes an error. The
smooth.spline function seems to want

tsdiag() titles
I am using the ts package to fit ARIMA models, and the tsdiag() function to
plot diagnostics. In doing so I'm generating an awful lot of diagnostic
plots of different models and different data sets all within the same R
session. So my question is, is there an option in tsdiag() similar to
<main="Title"> that I can use? This would be quite helpful when I print out
the plots,

AutoCAD file names UPPER CASE on samba
Hi folks, we are experiencing a problem when AutoCAD 2000+ drawing files
are saved on a Samba (2.0.8) file share.
Regardless of what the file is 'saved as', the name is always converted to all
capitals.
e.g. Drawing1 becomes DRAWING1
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Seems strange that it is only AutoCAD files, but I think it is Samba related,
not AutoCAD,

Infrasoft MX very slow loading from Samba share
We are experiencing long delays when loading MX files stored on our samba
fileserver.
We are running version 2.2.7a of Samba on Solaris 8 servers.
Using MX version 2.5 and higher on windows 2000 and XP workstations
When the files are stored locally they load in a few seconds, whilst taking more
than a minute to run
from the Samba server. Our current workaround is to store the files locally,

Bootstrapping
HI All,
I am trying to analyse the results of a heap of samples, to determine how
many samples are required to meet a defined confidence interval.
I checked out the R manual for bootstrapping and re-sampling methods, but
did not find anything. Are there any contributed procedures that deal with
this?
thanks,

simulate survival data using median survival time
Dear All,
I like to know how to simulate survival data using median (or mean) survival time. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes,

Are these BUGS? anyone experienced either of these?
I have experienced a couple of (minor) problems with Samba
Thought I would report these and ask if they are known problems.
1. Problem with "!" in username map file
2. Samba tools e.g. smbstatus, testparm not accounting for "config file"
parameter
1. There appears to be a problem with a minor part of username map file
interpretation.

Samba-3 HOWTO and ref. guide - need clarification please - printing chapter
Could someone who is familiar with the book "Samba-3 HOWTO and reference

I am summarising the procedure for setting up a printer for automatic

There are a couple of processes mentioned that look very similar and I am

Fonts and Line widths
Hi All R guru's,
A couple of simple questions which I cannot find answers to in "an
introduction to R" or in the reference manuals.
I am running R on Win95, and have plotted up quite a nice box and
whisker plot:
char<-read.table("n:/reddinm/grifpr~1/survey/char.txt")
attach(char)

Samba as AD domain member
Hi
we're running 3.0.1 on Solaris 9 ( with NIS/flat files as the NS ) as a
member server of the AD domain ( via kinit and then net join ).
there's a couple of things we've noticed and I'm not sure if they're just
the way it works or configuration problems:
(1) we assign the gid an uid mappings with idmap in smb.conf and I thought
that winbindd would not assign uid/gids if

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution?
We have a problem with file security settings changing when
a file is edited by someone who is not the owner.
When the edited file is saved, ownership is transferred to the
person who edited the file. Also, access control settings for the
file are reset to a default setting.
This is a real problem, since in some cases it means that the
original owner of the file no longer has permission to edit

recompile sshd with OPIE?
Hi,
I'm having trouble getting an answer to the following problem on -questions

I'd like to compile support for FreeBSD OPIE into sshd. Presently I have
to use PAM to achieve one-time password support. On a 4.x system I have
in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes
and in /etc/pam.conf

Aggregate: assembling the "by" part on the fly
Dear R users,
I'm having trouble using aggregate() and would
greatly appreciate your advice. I am using R 1.5.1
on Windows 2000.
I want to call my function in the following way
extract.data(x=dat[, "Age", "Year"])
where extract.data() uses aggregate() to count the number
of cases for each combination of "Age" and "Year".

Memory Efficiency of Symmetric Matrix
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I'm generating a symmetric correlation matrix using a data matrix as input:
mat <- cor(data.mat)
My question is:
Is there a more memory efficient way to store this data? For instance, since:
all(mat == t(mat))
every value is duplicated, and I should be able to almost half the memory usage for large matrices.
Any thoughts/comments?
Cheers,

matching a sequence in a vector?
Hi All,
I've been trawling through the documentation and listserv archives on this topic -- but
as yet have not found a solution. I'm sure this is pretty simple with R, but I cannot work out how without
resorting to ugly nested loops.
As far as I can tell, grep, match, and %in% are not the correct tools.
Question:
given these vectors --
patrn <- c(1,2,3,4)
