More on the archive bit saga
Thanks to all that have helped so far. I now have a test server running on Ubuntu 6.06 and Samba 3.0.22. I also configured ACL and user_xattr on the filesystem running the shares. But now I have very strange behavior that I hope someone has a clue about. User smith can open two files (foo.txt and faa.txt) with Notepad, Wordpad and Microsoft Word. The behavior for all three is different:

Incorrect format of Text
Hi, I am running Samba 2.2.8a on Solaris 8, and have shared out a directory containing some simple text files. The issue I am experiencing is the following: If the files are FTP'd from the Unix box to a Windows machine and opened using Notepad, the formatting is correct. If the same files are either opened directly or copied (from the Samba share) from the Unix box to the Windows machine,

samba on mipsel board
Hi, I have cross compiled samba to a mipsel board. I could access the shares from another linux machine using smbmount, and from a mac OSX machine. But, I can not modify files from an XP machine. I could successfully mount the shares, but if I open, say a text file from the XP in notepad and try to modify it, it generates an error "not enough storage is available to process this

DOS to UNIX Conversion
On 17 May 99, Axel Neumann <amn@cromemco.com> had questions about DOS to UNIX Conversion: > It seems that a lot of people hate Windoze in such a way that they only > accept solutions that are not coming from M$. Maybe that's because the M$ "solutions" are crap, and much better alternatives already exist. > If you want to view UNIX text files correctly on a W9x

Unix .TXT vs DOS .TXT files
Is there any option that will covert a text file from one system to the other? I have a few files on linux with extension TXT. There are plain text files. On NT, TXT is associated with the "notepad" and opens with the file as one long string. This is the typical CR/LF conversions between Unix and DOS. Can Samba convert the text files based on the client? Subba Rao subb3@attglobal.net

Quota / OpLock file truncation again
I am seeing a potentially serious bug with samba 3.0.22 on Linux (Ubuntu Dapper Drake). I found the following old discussions about the same problem: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2004-September/037328.html and http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2003-July/071081.html as well as this old closed bug in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679 I

to <cr> or not
I have had some success (read no noticed problems), moving some text conf files from a Win <cr,lf> format to Linux and have them work. For example my zone files, moving them from my Win DNS server. But what about other files? I guess I want to know this more to prevent a mistake from crashing things, as I do have GEDIT. If I were to build an anaconda-ks.cfg in notepad, write it to a

opening RDB files
Hi all, I've recently upgraded to R version 2.1.1 and when trying to inspect the contents of many packages in the library (for instance library\MASS\R) I've realized wordpad, or the notepad, won't open them since they have *.RDB and *.RDX extensions which these editors cannot recognize. However, libraries in previous versions of R did not have these extensions and I could inspect

Carriage Returns in files after copying
I apologize in advance if I'm wasting bandwidth with a simple question, but I was unable to find a solution for this problem in the documentation... I've got a set of shares set up on a SUN Enterprise 5500 using Samba 2.0.4. In Windows NT, I map a drive to the share. When I copy a text file from Windows NT to the SUN, editing the file in UNIX shows that ^M has been added to the end of

Apps under wine
Hi all, I've got notepad.exe to work under wine (i think it's built in). I'm trying to get wordpad.exe to work now. It's currently in ~/driveC/Program Files/Accessories. Wine says it can't find wordpad.exe. Do i need to add an explicit path for it in wine config, or should the windows registry supply the path? Is it any use copying the original windows registry to wine?

printing
I'm having trouble printing through wine. As a test I opened a file in notepad and printed it. When doing this with a linux editor the file is about 7 pages when printed. When I printed the same file in notepad the entire file printed as a .75" x 4" image (w x h). Obviously it is unreadable. What am I doing wrong and what do I need to correct it. The printer is an HP All-In-One

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution?
We have a problem with file security settings changing when a file is edited by someone who is not the owner. When the edited file is saved, ownership is transferred to the person who edited the file. Also, access control settings for the file are reset to a default setting. This is a real problem, since in some cases it means that the original owner of the file no longer has permission to edit

Notepad appends ".txt" to file names it looks for
The program I'm using is 4NEC2, a freeware antenna-modelling program. I'm running wine-0.9.61 on Gentoo Linux on a Dell with Intel Core Duo cpu. Let's say I'm working on a design that I call "fubar". 4NEC2 will create files with names like "fubar.NEC" and "fubar.log". 4NEC uses Notepad to open the files for viewing. For some reason, my system
