Compilation of R under Mandrake Linux 6.1 (helios)
I've just installed Mandrake Linux, then compiled R-0.65.1 . Whether because I omitted some necessary items when I selected software for installion, or because they anyway needed to be loaded afterwards, I found it necessary to load the following packages in order to compile R-0.65.1 pgcc-g77-1.1.3-3mdk.i586.rpm (Fortran g77 compiler) XFree66-devel-3.3.5-3mdk.i586.rpm (X.h etc

R as a server in client server computing
I like to have a continuously running R process, which can receive a dataframe from a client (over TCP/IP), does some processing, and sends some data back. What is the prefered way to do this? Using the socket interface? Using omega's CORBA stuff? Does anyone has example code for doing so? Thanks for any help Regards -- Dr. Jens Oehlschl?gel-Akiyoshi Analyse MD FACTORY GmbH Gr?nstr. 15

Project Proposal: The Gestalt System
The Gestalt System project aims to develop a free, Open Source, object-oriented software framework which makes use of other free, Open Source software tools for the purposes of managing, analysing, and reporting on quantitative data in a manner which is suited to modern, networked computing environments in which processor, memory, and storage resources are abundant but time is scarce and

calling R from python (fwd)
A question for a (experienced) user of the RPython package on linux. I'm trying to call R from python on a linux (Suse 7.3) box. After installing R CMD INSTALL -c RSPython_0.5-2.tar.gz I start python and do: >>> import sys >>> sys.path.append('/usr/local/lib/R/library/RSPython') >>> sys.path.append('/usr/local/lib/R/library/RSPython/Python')

Performance & capacity characteristics of R?
I hope this is merely a FAQ, and not an AFAQ (annoyingly....). I'm a SAS programmer, with several years' experience of the system, evaluating alternatives. See the SAS for Linux website (URL in sig) for more info. I'm exploring R's capabilities and limitations. I'd be very interested in having a deeper understanding of it capacity and performance limitations in dealing with

Parse Errors
Dear R Development Team, Using Thomas Baier's R Com Server -- or a dll I am building which supports an evaluate function that is based on Baier's function R_Proxy_evaluate contained in proxy_impl.c -- when I issue an invalid command to R such as "plo(x)" the program crashes. There is code in R_Proxy_evaluate to test for a parse error before actually generating code and issuing

embedding R?
My apologies if this is a FAQ, I searched the mailing list archives before posting. Background: I am a long time user of SPlus, and a recent user of R. My work normally involves converting the raw output of something interesting into data to be analyzed in S/R, for which I use Perl extensively. I then import the data into S/R, perform the analyses I need, dumping the values into a new file,

StatDataML
Hi, we have a first draft of R functions reading/writing data to XML files including a rather general DTD ... which borrows heavily from the data types of a certain programming language :-) The basic idea is to create an XML standard for data exchange, together with import/export functions for as many applications as possible. We here will need R, Matlab & Octave for our research program,

Apologies -- spam filter mail
My apologies to this list for an automated spam reply which made its way here recently. I've been advised of it by several subscribers off-list. I've disabled the automated response feature of my spam filter (Lars Wirzenius's "spamfilter" procmail recipies). I'm finding the tool effective but overly aggressive -- if anyone here has experience with this tool, I'd

Installing RSPython with R 1.3.0
To get RSPython installed on my debian test box, I had to make a couple of changes not listed in ftp://www.omegahat.org/pub/Omega/RSPython/FAQ.html 1) I had to change $R_HOME/src/modules/X11 : $(R_X11_la): $(R_X11_la_OBJECTS) $(R_X11_la_DEPENDENCIES) $(SHLIB_LINK) -o $@ $(R_X11_la_LDFLAGS) $(R_X11_la_OBJECTS) $(R_X11_la_LIBADD) $(LIBS) to $(R_X11_la): $(R_X11_la_OBJECTS)

RSPerl...
Duncan - (but sent to R-devel, for any other thoughts?) How do you envision RSPerl being used? Without having seen the details, I can think of playing with strings; is there a preferred incantation for stringification of R objects (serialization)? (actually, the main problem I'm having is that I know how I want to code something like: Robject <-

RJava lib error
Hello all! I recently install R-1.2.3 and Omegahat SJava pkg (formely Java pkg) 0.62 and tried running the examples by issuing "scripts/RJava --example --gui=none" and I got the following: Error in dyn.load(x, as.logical(local), as.logical(now)) : unable to load shared library "/usr/lib/R/library/ctest/libs/ctest.so": ld.so.1:

RSPython
Hi all, I try to utilize RSPython to invoke Python from R. For me it works pretty fine for basic applications, but I have 3 problems that may be related. (1) I can't load other packages but "standard" ones also when I adjust the PythonPath: > importPythonModule('sys', all=T) NULL > importPythonModule('numpy', all=T) Error in

Rversion.h
Our current intention is to no longer include Rversion.h from R.h as from R 1.6.0 (which is months away). Package maintainers when revising code might like to check if they actually use Rversion.h, and if so include it explicitly. I did a quick grep through the CRAN packages, and in all but one case (mda) the test is for R < 1.2.0, so it may be simplest just to tidy up and add `Depends: R

R and XML -- a near perfect combination?
Please ignore my ignorance, I'm new to R, but starting a longish project that will use R a lot. (a computer scientist learning about stats at the same time). Did anybody alreay write a XML parser for R? XML, as we will have tons of data-interchange with all sorts of other programs and XML is good for giving meaning to raw data. I checked the FAQs and the documentation, but didn't find

Is there any package similar to the XML package that is able to "extract" relevant information from HTML files. Namely, I'm interested in obtained data that is represented as a HTML table, into some R-type structure. calling R from Perl
Hi, I want to call R from Perl to generate plots to be displayed on a webpage. What I found out so far is that there is a package called RSPerl on www.omegahat.org which should do what I need. However in the description it says it has been tested with R 1.3.* the latest. I'm using R 1.8.0 right now so the package seems rather unmaintained. It is not easy for me to just install it and see
