Package for variable clustering
Dear R users: is there a package, similar to varclus in SAS or varclus in S, ported or written for R? Also, is there any other package in R that was designed for grouping the variables under different measures of distance (in cases where data is non-Gaussian, autocorrelated, and so on). Goodness-of-fit
Hi, I want to perform goodness of fit test for multinominal distribution. The easiest way would be to use Chi2, but the measurment errors are not normally distributed. I thought about using some bootstraping method to perform the analysis. How can I do it in R? Why are looping variables not local?
Hello, I've had a quick look on the list and can't find an answer to this niggle. Whilst debugging some code, I noticed that looping variables in R are not local to the loop as seams common in procedural languages. For example consider the following piece of code: for(i in 1:3){ cat(i,"") for(i in c("a","b","c")){ cat(i,"")

mixture distributions
Dear List, I am looking for a possibility to fit a mixture model under R using maximum likelihood estimation. Venables and Ripley describe a solution working under S+ (in MASS, 3. ed., p. 263) which requires the D system function and deriv3. This solution does not seem to be portable to R or at least I do not realise how. Is there anyone who a) knows how one could make the MASS-method run under

xfig device
Hi, I am VERY interested in getting the xfig driver so that I can edit graphical output from R. Searching through the mail archives and reading documentation isn't helping. Is there or isn't there a working driver for this purpose. How can I get it? I tried looking at the development version of the tarballs, but I didn't find anything that looked promising in there. Also, does

fast code
Hello, I have two vectors x1 and x2 both in increasing order. I want to select the x1[j]th entry which is the max min of the x2[i]th entry. I can do this using if and for statements but is there a quick way to do it without running a loop? Thank you in advance, Pantelis

polkit helper timeout and defunct pkla-check-authorization processes on CentOS 7.3
Hi everyone, We seem to be having issues on multiple CentOS 7.3 machines. The problem seems to revolve around polkitd. At some random time, polkitd seems to stop responding on my systems. Along with this, there might be hundreds of defunct pkla-check-authorization processes. If I reboot, then things are fine for a while. I don't see any activity in the unabridged journal to suggest anything

I've compiled the 1.8.0 R on Solaris 2.9 and when trying to use plot command I get the Bus error and a core dump. Anybody experienced something like this? If yes, what should I patch? Janusz. [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

CentOS 7 rsyslog and ELK
I asked a similar question about a year ago and didn't get any answers. So I thought I'd try again. What do people do to get their syslog messages on CentOS 7 into a remote ELK stack. I've tried lots of things involving rsyslog, filebeat, redis, logstash and so on in lots of different configurations but nothing really works. I can get rsyslog to talk directly to logstash (acting as

Intel/64 CentOS VM running on a Mac M1?
My Dell Precision M3800 running Fedora works great but is really starting to show its age, and I'm thinking about getting a new Mac M1-based laptop as it would really be useful for Video production. But I really need to have a IA64 CentOS 7/8 VMs running locally for development as I'm often on the road and flaky Internet makes it a necessity to keep productivity up. I've been

possibility of R/Maxima linking
Hello, I'm aware that recently there has been discussion of R joining forces with an algebra system in some way. Here is my $0.02. I suggest linking R with Maxima (http://maxima.sf.net). Maxima is written in Lisp. Maxima objects are pretty simple. Maxima works on expressions, and almost every expression is a Lisp list of the form ((op) arg1 arg2 arg3 ...) which associates an operator and

importing shapefiles into spatstat
Dear R users, I am using spatstat to analyze point patterns (tree locations). I would like to import the shapefile with the study area polygons (six total) into R and use it to create the window for the spatstat analysis. I do not simply want to use a rectangle because the study areas spread out over 40000 ha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Charlotte Reemts Charlotte
