two new packages
I've prepared preliminary versions of two packages that I plan eventually
to contribute to CRAN:

variety of functions in support of linear and generalized linear models,
including regression diagnostics (e.g., studentized residuals, hat-values,

Using XEmacs and ESS with R for MS/Windows
I've been working on a document describing the use of XEmacs and ESS with R
for Windows users, along with configuration files that are meant to make
things simple for Windows users. This was initially intended for my
students, but with recent discussions of Windows (and other) editors on the
the R-help list, I thought that I'd make the material more widely available.

bitmap images in tcltk
Dear R-help list members,
I'm writing a package using tcltk. Thanks to Peter Dalgaard's excellent
work on the tcltk package, almost everything has gone very smoothly. I'm
stymied, however, by the following problem:
I want to incorporate a bitmap image, stored as an xbm file, in a widget.
To take a simple example,
top <- tktoplevel()

user coordinates and rug plots in lattice graphics
Dear R list members,
I'd like to produce rug plots at the bottom of panels in a trellis display
(using the lattice package), but par("usr") doesn't return user coordinates
for panels, and consequently rug fails, as the following example (suggested
to me by Georges Monette) illustrates:
> x <- rnorm(50)
> y <- rnorm(50)
> f <-

problem assigning an array to a variable in a data frame
Dear r-devel list members,
Dirk Eddelbuettel brought the following problem to my attention. The code
is abstracted from the appendix on mixed models from my R and S-PLUS Companion:
> set.seed(12345) # for reproducibility
> library(nlme)
Loading required package: lattice
> data(MathAchieve)
> data(MathAchSchool)
> attach(MathAchieve)

typsize and fscale arguments to nlm
Dear R list members,
I have a question about the proper use of the typsize and fscale arguments
to nlm.
I use nlm in my sem package to fit general structural-equation models,
which entails maximizing a multinormal likelihood with respect to
parameters that represent regression coefficients and covariances of
variables. The magnitudes of these parameters can be very different.

R CMD check problem with R 3.0.2
Using SUSE Linux, Windows 32 bit and Windows 64 bit R 3.0.2 , I am unable
to use R CMD check successfully. Here is the Windows 64 bit report:

suggested changes to summary.glm and summary.lm (PR#2776)
Something for the wish list (not really a bug):
I was reminded of what I see as a problem with summary.glm last week when
some of my students fell into a trap in a homework exercise, defining a
logit model in which coefficients were aliased. When this happens in lm,
summary.lm prints a message ["Coefficients: (1 not defined because of
singularities)"], but summary.glm is silent. In

further on ESS/XEmacs for Windows
Dear list members,
I've had helpful feedback from a number of people, several of whom
experienced some problems getting my XEmacs/ESS configuration files for
Windows to work properly. I will, of course, make changes based on this
feedback, but the following information may be of use in the interim:

problem with lme in nlme package
Dear R list members,
I've turned up a strange discrepancy between results obtained from the lme
function in the nlme package in R and results obtained with lme in S-PLUS.
I'm using version 3.1-24 of nlme in R 1.4.1 under Windows 2000, and both
S-PLUS 2000 and 6.0, again under Windows 2000.
I've noticed discrepancies in a couple of instances. Here's one, using data

problem with expand.model.frame
Dear R list members,
I'm encountering a problem with expand.model.frame(): Suppose that I define
the following simple function (meant
just to illustrate the problem):

and I have the following model, created with an explicit data argument:

another optimization question
Dear R list members,
Since today seems to be the day for optimization questions, I have one that
has been puzzling me:
I've been doing some work on sem, my structural-equation modelling package.
The models that the sem function in this package fits are essentially
parametrizations of the multinormal distribution. The function uses optim
and nlm sequentially to maximize a multinormal

gam()
Dear all,
I've now spent a couple of days trying to learn R and, in particular, the
gam() function, and I now have a few questions and reflections regarding
the latter. Maybe these things are implemented in some way that I'm not yet
aware of or have perhaps been decided by the R community to not be what's
wanted. Of course, my lack of complete theoretical understanding of what

Package 'data.table' in version R-3.5.0 not successfully being installed
Dear Akhilesh,
I hope that it's clear that the Windows binary I provided for the data.table package is a temporary solution, and that the maintainer should fix the package so that it passes its own tests. You should be careful using the package in its current state.
Best,
John

Package 'data.table' in version R-3.5.0 not successfully being installed
Akhilesh,
I don't know if I am adding signal or noise here, but I installed R 3.5.0 yesterday and installed data.table just fine, but I have Rtools installed. "Building packages from source" may sound intimidating, but Rtools is really easy to install and once installed, it does all the work for you.
Thanks,
Roger

Dear list members,
I’m trying to install R Commander under Mac OSX Mountain Lion (10.8.2). After following all the steps described in the installation notes (http://socserv.socsci.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Misc/Rcmdr/installation-notes.html), I got this error message:
