non-ideal behavior in princomp
This problem is not limited to R, but R is one of the packages in which it
arises.
princomp is a nice function which creates an object for which inspection
methods have been written.
Unfortunately, princomp does not admit cases in which the x matrix is wider
than high (i. e. more variables than observations). Such cases are typical
in spectroscopy and related disciplines. It would be nice if the

The desire for prettier and cheaper images ...
This might be easy (but I didn't find an answer in the archives).
I'm trying to make nice looking images (using image()).
To make them look nice (not jagged), it usually takes me at least 100x100 points. This can be slow for frequent redraws.
Is there a smarter (less point intensive) way?
I was thinking in terms of hexabins, for example, which for much less jagged looking regions,

A little problem handling logicals in RMySQL under R1.6.1
There is a little problem in handling logicals in RMySQL:

rterm not shutting down from ESS on Win32/could we help?
Hi to all who suffer from rterm not shutting down in xemacs/ESS on windows NT or 2000. Also hi to those who could eventually help. Here is some more information which could help and some ENCOURAGEMENT to contribute to a solution.
1. It may be an xemacs problem but it is more likely an interaction between rterm/comint/and xemacs. In fact, the problem started occurring around version R 1.6.0. I

arrows() doesn't like zero-length arrows (PR#727)
Hi,
By going through the mailing list archives, I noticed that people use
the arrows() command to add error bars to their plots. I think there
is a problem when trying to draw arrows of zero length. In the
following code, certainly the x driver produces an odd-angled line.
In the postscript device, NaNQ values are generated; when the
postscript file is viewed in Ghostview, an error is then

Arrow heads at the end of axes
I would like to have arrow heads at the end of my axes, since I am
plotting variable where the absolute amount is irrelevant, there is not
supposed to be numbers on the axes.
An imperfect example:
plot(rnorm(10),bty='l',xaxt='n',yaxt='n',ylab='',xlab='',type='l')
abline(h=0)
Like this but without, the xaxis and with arrrowheads

arrow egdes and lty
Dear R developers,
I want to draw an arrow in a figure with lty=2. The
lty argument also affects the edge of the arrow, which is
unfortunate. Feature or bug?
Is there some way to draw an arrow with intact edge, still
with lty=2?
Example code:
plot(1:10)
arrows(4, 5, 6, 7, lty=2)
Best wishes,
Matthias

editing ".Internal" functions
There is a function called arrows() which is an .Internal function. How
difficult is it to modify that function to return the xy coordinates for
the line "segments" that make up the arrowhead?

arrowhead styles
Hi all,
I've been using the arrows() function in plots a lot, but I'm not
happy with the appearance of the arrow heads. I understand that arrows
() doesn't offer more sophisticated arrowhead shapes like e.g. a
filled triangle, possibly with choice of angle at the point. Does
anyone know an easy way to achieve this?
thanks

Equal confidence interval arrowhead lengths across multiple-paneled lattice plots with free y-scales
Hi.
I've got a lattice plot with multiple panels and two groups superimposed
on each panel. Each panel has an independently scaled y-axis (scales =
list(relation = "free")).
I've successfully put up 95%CI error bars using panel.arrows (and some
help from the mailing list). My question is whether I can "unscale" the
arrowheads so that they appear to have the same

Wine and industrial communication like OPC
Hello!
I have some questions about Wine and how/if it can be used with industrial communication like OPC (MicroSoft Com/DCom objects, DDE and more)
My short question is:
Can I use Wine to make OPC communication work with a Linux system.

Problem with Notepad ++
A little more thought into helping troubleshooting maybe take an ls -l and
a properties screen shot in the middle of editing a file. It could be some
setting in notepad++ that is interfering with itself.

If your file is unchanged and the modified time is unchange in both ls -l
and the Windows file browser and notepad++ saw a change then the problem is
with notepad++ not in samba or linux.

To keep my scripts short and tidy, I want to call sub-functions and return
variables from these for subsequent use in the calling function.

BestPower Ferrups driver glitch with f commands
I did the testing you suggested, and it was indeed the whitespace. I added another if clause test to the function and everything seems to work. I have working driver that I will email a patch for this list. My coworker says the model ID is configurable though, so we will try that first, which would negate the need to patch the driver.
