RData file
Hi all, I just quit R Version 1.1.0 in the usual q() manner which resulted in a fatal error, which seems to have wiped out all my RData file. Now when I try to load up R it gives the message Error: restore file corrupted -- no data loaded Fatal error : unable to restore saved data (remove .RData or increase memory) How do I access the RData or what do I increase the memory size to to retrieve

xlab not displayed when 'expression' is used
Hi all, When using the function expression to label the axis of a plot. I found that it labeled the y-axis correctly but left no label on the x-axis. The command I'm using is as follows plot(x,y,xlab=expression(v[junc]),ylab=expression(c[junc])) Any help is much appreciated Margaret Riordan -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing

semi-parametric (partial linear?) regression
I just heard a talk about a semi-parametric model. I was quite excited by the idea. This model is fitted y= xB + g(z) + e where x is a data matrix, B a column vector, z is another data matrix, and g is a smooth model fitted by a Kernel Smoothing regression (I got the idea any smoother would do as well). The speaker said that when z is considered as a "control" variable, and there is

Problem with decoding number of codebooks
Hello, I'm trying to write a Vorbis decoder (just as a hobby) but I've got a problem with reading the setup header. According to the Vorbis documentation the first data that should be read after the initial 'vorbis' string is an eight bit integer which when incremented by one, contains the number of codebooks in the header. My problem is that whenever I read this number it seems

RegExp Question
I have to admit that I'm a bit ignorant about regular expressions...I have a problem with "gsub": under unix I can : > cat tmp.txt F.123 F.123 F123 F123 sed 's/F\./d/g' tmp.txt d123 d123 F123 F123 that is: replacing "F.", however under R: gsub("F\.","d",c("F123","F.123"),extended=F) [1] "d23"

multiple lattice-pages (development package!)...
One Question: if I make a lattice-plot (beware: under development!) with a special layout e.g. c(2,2,4): p1 <- xyplot(y~x|id,data=data,layout=c(2,2,3)) is there a way to print.trellis e.g. the second page of the trellis object "p1"? print.trellis(p1,page=2) #!wrong! I want this to automatically dev.print the pages (no, I don't want multiple postscript pages). If this

a < b < c is alway TRUE
One of our students did something like: x[a < b < c] instead of x[a < b & b < c] But why is 3 < 2 < 1 # [1] TRUE ??? Is there any reason? Or wouldn't it be better to get a warning / error? lattice (!under development!) font curiosity
Perhaps this might be a font problem, it might be that my font dirs are broken (but I don't think so, it is a standard potato inst.): > xyplot(rnorm(10) ~ rnorm(10) ,main=list("???dsa",cex=2)) ...displays German special characters false (as greek letters). Curiously these work o.k.: > xyplot(rnorm(10) ~ rnorm(10) ,main="?dsa") > xyplot(rnorm(10) ~ rnorm(10)

merge aint merging
g'day R friends, can anyone please help me with a frustrating merge? The number of rows of a resulting merge is the smaller of the 2 dataframes used as input. What am I doing wrong? R on HP-UX, again: modreg.sl fails, 1 arith test fails
I want to report the progress of my attempts to get R running on HP-UX with gcc: Firstly, I could work around the PIC problem by leaving out all the lib stuff (I rebuilt gcc with --enable-share, but this (alone) did not help), e.g. the line gcc -shared -fPIC -o ctest.sl ansari.o fexact.o kendall.o ks.o prho.o swilk.o -L/usr/local/lib -lg2c -lm -L/lib/pa1.1 -L/usr/lib/pa1.1 -u main

non-R hevea question
Dear People: Here is a non-R question, please: Does anyone use hevea for Windows to translate LaTex to HTML? If so, how do you get \bar, \sqrt, and \ne, please? I get an error message of unknown macro. Thanks in advance for any help! Sincerely, Erin M. Landscape problems with ps2pdf [summary]
Since I sent my original question last week, this is one of two suggestions that worked. Using Adobe Acrobat, as suggested by Professor Ripley, was very satisfactory, but required that I use multiple platforms to make the conversion to PDF (from Linux to Windows). The solution by Peter Adorjan (included below), also worked very well, and can be carried out on any platform using tools available

:predict.ppr
Hi all, I am doing a projection pursuit regression using the ppr() function from modreg. I would also like to use predict.ppr(). However, I cannot find any information about it in the help files. There is a link to predict.ppr in the index for modreg, but that link is to the help for ppr(). Has predict.ppr() not been implemented? If not, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to implement

OT: PSTOWMF
Hallo, I've produced via R-0.62 several Life-tables 50*6 (mfrow=c(2,3)) as postscriptgraphs. The phd student, who asked for this, use word for windows--therefore i converted the whole stuff with pstoimg to gifs. Unlikly the result is not sufficient (I was told)... Is there a tool to convert ps to wmf/emf ? I looked for it but haven't found anything... Thanks for an answer Peter

Curve Fitting Question - Newbie
Hello, I have what should be an easy question. I'm a new r user and making the transition from menus to the command line so as to do batch processing of tons of data. One of my data streams needs to be detrended. It's a vector of numbers that follows a negative exponential decay. I need to fit a curve to it and use the residuals as an object. The data looks something like this: foo.dat
