is it possible to use R to edit an EXCEL spreadsheet so I can create a searchable EXCEL database of R packages?
I have copied the R FAQ pertaining to available packages into an EXCEL
file. They take the following form -

Regression modeling, testing, estimation, validation, graphics, prediction,
and typesetting by storing enhanced model design attributes in the fit.

Processing a large number of files
I maintain the Devore5 package which contains the data sets from the
5th edition of Jay Devore's text "Probability and Statistics for
Engineering and the Sciences". The 6th edition has now been published
and it includes several new data sets in exercises and examples. In
addition, some exercises and examples from the 5th edition are
renumbered in the 6th edition.

Where's MVA?
Hi All:
Package TSERIES is stated to depend on MVA. However, there is no MVA package to be found under the list of package sources.
Best wishes,

A "stack" function
I am using R in my undergraduate engineering statistics courses, in
which I am currently discussing one-way analysis of variance. Many of
the data sets for the exercises or examples give the data in the form
on one column per treatment level. To use the aov or lm functions
such data should be converted to one column with all the response
observations and a companion column with indicators of the

Hi,
I have just successfully launched Printmaster Gold Version 3 (for Window

Xubuntu Edgy (with updates) with the following caveat: Printmaster must
be launched twice because on first launch the following error dialog

Creating Program Manager groups/launchers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Is it possible to create groups in Program Manager that persist across
invocations of wine? I have tried, but when I relaunch progman I just
get an empty screen. I haven't tried to create program launchers, but
would like to know that as well.
I didn't see anything in the docs I read or a quick google, so I'm not
sure if it's

1.2.6 to 2.0.1 500 internal server error
Trying to upgrade from 1.2.6 to 2.0.1 and I am getting a 500 internal
server error after server start up and I try to make any request or
even click on ''about your applications environment''. Am I missing
something simple?

Problem in loading all packages all at once
Hi All
Please see the Rprofile file which i have modified as follows and after
that when I start R then I see that R says to me "TRUE" for all the
packages implying that all loaded at once.
But when i try to use commands as simple as help("lm"), it doesnt work nor
any of the menu "Packages" is not working.
Although the regression using lm ( Y ~ X ) is working

nls newbie: help approximating Weibull distribution
Hi folks,
I tried to retain the Weibull distribution using the `nls' function
and proceeding along the lines of the example provided in the
`SSweibull' help (at least I thought so):
t <- (1:200)/100
v <- pweibull(t, shape=3, scale=1)
df <- data.frame(Time=t, Value=v)
Asym <- 1.0; Drop <- 1.0; lrc <- 0; pwr <- 1
df.estimate <- nls(Value ~ SSweibull(Time,

G729 Licensing Revisited - I'm Sorry!
Hello Everyone,
We are looking to transition our 23 channels from testing/lab into
production. During testing we used the free open source g729 license
using the instructions found here:
http://blog.manhag.org/2010/05/installing-the-free-g729-codec-for-asterisk/
A little more about our setup. All recordings have been converted to
G729, all voicemail messages are also in G729, finally

multiple comparison tests & simultaneous multiple plots
I am not sure if my message made it through, so here it is again!
Hi Rer's,
R-1.1.0
I have two questions for you:
1)
I am trying to complete a multiple comparison test after completing a
one-way ANOVA on some data. I think this is pretty reasonable.
aov(MetricSubset ~ GeneNameFactor)
works
pairwise.t.test(MetricSubset,GeneNameSubset,p.adjuxt.method=bonferroni,p
ool.sd=FALSE)

hist and normal curve
Dear R people:
I would like to superimpose a normal curve on a histogram.
I've seen this example in a book, somewhere.
I know that you draw the hist, get the mean and sd
of the data set, but then I'm stuck.
Could you help, please?
Thanks!

Posthoc tests for ANOVA
Dear List,
are there post-hoc tests like Scheffe, LSD, etc. available after ANOVA test
is performed with significant F-statistic?
I have tried
help.search("Scheffe"),
but "No documentation found" (and I have most of packages installed).
Probably there are such tests in R, and I am just searching badly...
My second question is: Which test/method I should use for ANOVA-like

I use a function update.packages to update all packages in my R instalation.
But I need compare one by one packages to discovery new packages.
My question is: Exist in R any function that compare all installed packages
in my R and all packages available in CRAN and return a list of the new
packages (ie packages that I dont have im my installation) and automatic

sortables and onClick events firing
I have a page that I have been tasked with adding sortable support to, and
the div elements that are being dragged have a <a href> in them with an
onClick handler that opens a new window with a preview. Is there a way to
keep that onCLick from firing when a sortable is dropped?

so-called snprintf() in db-1.85.4
Hi,
There is a severe problem with the db-1.85.4 library''s Linux
port that can be found on sunsite.unc.edu under
/pub/Linux/libs/db-1.85.4-src.tar.gz (sp?): This library
contains a "snprintf" function which breaks down to a common
sprintf, ignoring the size parameter. Obviously, this was
thought to be a terribly bad work-around for C libraries which
don''t contain an

Example of cell means model
This is an example from chapter 11 of the 6th edition of Devore's
engineering statistics text. It happens to be a balanced data set in
two factors but the calculations will also work for unbalanced data.
I create a factor called 'cell' from the text representation of the
Variety level and the Density level using '/' as the separator
character. The coefficients for the linear

excuse any etiquette breaches as I do not yet have a feel for how the

I am in the process of teaching myself statistics using R as my utility

I could afford.
