Weird operator behaviour
Hi,
I have a dataset called 'fish'. fish$Species returns extract 1. When I use
fish$Species != c("CRA","PHC"), i.e. I want all species except "CRA" and
"PHC", I get extract 2 which is blatantly wrong. Can anyone see what I'm
doing wrong?
Regards,
James

documentation error par("cin") and par("cra") (PR#7227)
Dear all,
the help of par() claims that
cin and cra are
c(width, height)
but it appears to be rather
c(height, width)
Best regards

Inferring dimensions on bitmap device from par()
Hi,
I am trying to infer the dimension of an opened bitmap (png, jpeg,
bitmap device...) from par() parmeters. From the help on par(), I
found that:
> dim <- c(400, 200)
> png("foo.png", width=dim[1], height=dim[2])
> dim2 <- par("din") * par("cra") / par("cin")
> dev.off()

minimization
Hi, I got a code from S that uses 'nlminb' to minimize a function
with constraints. Is there a similar function in R?
Thanks.

differential equations
Hi, Does somebody knows of the existence of a library of functions
for solving differential equations, I need a solver for a system of non
linear first order differential equations. I think there was something
in IMSL but that was a long time ago and probably there are some
new algorithms in the new now.
Thanks for any pointers.

Large plot symbols (with pch = 1 etc)
On my home (Windows 98) machine I find:
> par()$cra
[1] 42 16
> par()$csi
[1] 0.1666667
>
On my work machine I believe I had
par()$cra
[1] 17 16
So it looks as though R is reading the width wrongly,
and that it is the width that is somehow used to
determine the plot character size.
Incidentally I noted Brian's comment that R had misread
his character dimension information wrongly.

PhD student reading list, suggestions wanted
I've got a PhD student starting this year.
She'll be working on data mining.
She has asked for a reading list while she's still in her home
country, which is a really good sign.
Her cosupervisor and I don't (think we) have any problem with
choosing things that are specifically about data mining, but
there are some statistical ideas (sampling, exploratory-vs-confirmatory,

extraction
Hello everybody
I am trying to extract some observations from a data frame, ie the
subjects that belong to a given group, and although t-test etc work
if I try to obtain the number of subjects in the subgroup i get some
funny numbers. All the subjects with NA for group are included in
the subgroups 'group==1' etc.
Is this a bug?

Warning in par(args)
I'm getting a lot of warning having to do with setting graphic parameters. I
don't recall actually setting any of these, so I would guess they are being set
by something I am calling. Has anyone already figured out where this is
happening?

Slicing cra**y csv files
Hello,
For not too regular users of R, preparing the data is somehow a burden.
Comming from iMacro in FireFox I get a badly designed csv, which I need to
put into a daily R script.
The data looks like that (e.g.):
22 Results,"35 Results","39 Results","2 Results","7 Results","23
Results","42 Results","36 Results","22

Combining Custom and Preset Linetypes
Dear R-Users,
I created the xyplot below using 10 groups (9 groups + 'Total' of all
groups) with lty=1:10. I need the 'Total' to be a bold solid line (lty=1)
where as the 9 groups just need to be distinguishable from each other. As
you can probably see, when the group reaches CRA6 the lty starts from 1
again. I have tried to specify ten unique lines using lty=

crosstab means
I would like to obtain a crosstabulation of means(var, quantiles...)
i.e. I have a data frame with Var-i, Var-j, Var-k, Var-X, var-Y
I like to have the mean of Var-X for each combination of Var-i,Var-j.
One solution would be:
by(var-i,Var-j,mean(Var-x))
but I would like it better formatted and with mean,S.Dev,n for each
cell?
Does anybody have some function to do this or some ideas how to go

Hi, I am relatively new to R programming. I have Guido's version on a

I tried to compile the Package MIXREG of Rolf Turner in S to R
almost everything works OK but he has a function po = partial outer
product as follows:
po <- function(a,b) {
array(apply(b,2,"*",a),dim=c(dim(a),dim(b)[2]))) }

Hello, I have a problem. I have to read a HUGE file which has to be
line processed, so I would like to use scan like
p <- scan(pfile,what=c(0,0,0,"",0,""),nlines=1)
but it continues to read the first line, so I have to add a skip and
increment the skip after each read.
It takes forever to read a test file of 1 Mb, the real one is in 60's Mb
Is there a way to read line
