"RMySQL for R 2.0.1"
Dear List,
RMySQL is old and wouldn't install on R 2.0.1.
How should the source be rewritten to be accepted by R 2.0.1.
With thanks

BibTeX entries in CITATION file
Dear List,
While trying to define a customised CITATION file for a package,
following R-exts, I realised that if I use only one 'citEntry' I got
both a text description and a BibTex entry for the package, as for the
'nlme' package:

R and mysql on debian
Hello,
I have been using RODBC on Windows with version 1.41 of R successfully,
connecting to a mysql database using MyODBC. Now I would like to do so
with R under Debian/GNU Linux.
I just tried RMySQL (install failed, since mysql libraries were not found),
DBI (no MySQL driver available) and I can't find the RODBC package
any more on CRAN.
Any suggestions?

An artifact of base being namespace
Function in the base library of R 1.8.0 seems to use a search path with
base coming before the local environment. I think this is intentional
and is related to base being a namespace.

Is there any help for "Cannot allocate vector size of xxx KB"
Forgive me if this isn't relevant, but: are you stripping off the output you
need (e.g., parameter estimates) and throwing away what you don't (e.g.,
residuals)?

anova of lme objects (model1, model2) gives different results depending on order of models
Hello-
I understand that it's convention, when comparing two models using the
anova function anova(model1, model2), to put the more "complicated" (for
want of a better word) model as the second model. However, I'm using lme
in the nlme package and I've found that the order of the models actually
gives opposite results. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the case

confidence interval too small in nlme?
Hello,
I am interested in using nlme to model repeated measurements, but I don't seem
to get good CIs.
With the code below I tried to generate data sets according to the model given
by equations (1.4) and (1.5) on pages 7 and 8 of Pinheiro and Bates 2000 (having
chosen values for beta, sigma.b and sigma similar to those estimated in the
text).
For each data set I used lme() to fit a model,

Questions about S4 style methods and generics
I have some questions about S4 style methods and generics.
First of all, is there any way of using default values for arguments
in the generics/methods? My own experiments show that such arguments
are always ignored. The green book seems to be silent on this
matter.
The second question is about using a non-trivial function body for
generics. Page 351 of the green book gives an example of this

An SPSS save file for testing
Saikat DebRoy is working on a revised "foreign" package (currently in
the src/contrib/Devel area on CRAN) that will include the ability to
read the SPSS save format. Since we don't use SPSS we don't have easy
access to a sample data set and have been using PSPP (see
http://pspp.stat.wisc.edu/) to generate test data. It would be more
realistic to have a small, redistributable

Folding ?
Hi,
I need to write a function that would look something like this:
S <- function(b=betas){
expression(b[1] * f(b[2] * x * f(b[3] * x * f(...b[n-1] * x * f(b[n] *
x)))...)
}
Where n is the number of element in b.
Further I need to be able to evaluate S at some x numerically of course and
I need to use "deriv" and produce dS/dx such that I can evaluate it also at
some x.

Problem installing R on openSUSE 10.3
Dear All,
I am trying to install R 2.7 on my openSUSE 10.3. I have faithfully followed instruction at http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/suse/ReadMe.txt. I have downloaded all the RPMs but still R complains about:
libtcl8.4.so is needed by R-base-2.7.1-6.1.i586
I searched for this library and found a one, tcl-8.4.15-22.i586.rpm at openSUSE distribution site and installed. But R still complains

Multilevel analysis with package lme
Dear list,
i am a student of psychology and have to do a multilevelanalysis on some data.
About that i have one general and one specific question.
This is what i have copied from the help-file on lme:
data(bdf)
fm <- lme(langPOST ~ IQ.ver.cen + avg.IQ.ver.cen, data = bdf,
random = ~ IQ.ver.cen | schoolNR)
summary(fm)
after summary(fm) i get the following error:
