WANTED: Q&A
First, I am really liking what I have seen so far in R. The demos are quite fascinating, and I look forward to doing some really neat stuff over the next little while with R. Being but an intiate to R, I am having quite a bit of trouble figuring out how to use the leaps library. Rather than ask several questions to the list at large, I would rather explain what I'm trying to do to someone in

MA / RMA / Type II regression?
For starters, let me say again how impressive R is, and how all of the effort that has gone into R shines through clearly. It is an amazing program, and I am frequently pleasantly surprised to find out how powerful and capable R is. Finding the interface to xgobi is the latest pleasant surprise. Are there functions in R for Major Axis and Reduced Major Axis regression? I have OBS-RESID graphs of

identify() and controlling label size
I thought this was going to be easy ... Can the label size of identify() be controlled by setting par(cex.*) because I'm having no luck? My only recourse is to save the index and position of the labels from identify() and use text() to replot them. leaps: XHAUST returned error code -999
Hi there, This problem has been dogging me for a bit, and I'm trying to figure out why. When running the the subsets function in the leaps library, R is giving me the following error message > lvodsub <- subsets(pred, resp$LVOD) Warning message: XHAUST returned error code -999 in: leaps.exhaustive(a, really.big = really.big) but this still happens if I add the really.big option:

OpenSSL on CentOS 3.4?
I'm running a CentOS 3.4 box. According to yum, the OpenSSL 0.9.7a-33.15 package I have installed is the latest available. A check of the OpenSSL website shows 0.9.7g source being the latest. Is the CentOS 0.9.7a package patched to cover the same isues that the generic 0.9.7 source covers? If not, what's my recourse? Build it by hand? If I need to build it, has anybody crossed that

Would a spreadsheet be a good project using LLVM?
I am thinking about writing a new open source spreadsheet application since I think the spreadsheet applications out there (Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, etc.) do not have some features that I would really like to use. I would like the spreadsheet to recalculate very fast and wondered if it would make sense to use LLVM to calculate the cell values quickly. Each cell of a spreadsheet

Would a spreadsheet be a good project using LLVM?
Mats, Thanks for your feedback. I guess I should elaborate on one of the features I would like to implement. In today's spreadsheets if you want to crunch a lot of data, you usually put the data in rows and put expressions in cells to the right of the data and repeat those cells for every row of the data. I would like to create a spreadsheet system that can process the same quantity of

Loss of precision when importing data into R
Hi Listers, I can't seem to figure out why I loose precision when I try to import a comma delimited file using read.csv or read.table. The fields of interest are rounded to one decimal place. Access to internal UPS logs?
Do any known UPS's keep internal logs of events? I am currently using a slightly modified version if usbhid-ups to talk to a HP T/R2200 G2, which is internally a TrippLite UPS. The UPS is randomly turning off its output power, at intervals of once every week or two, even though during this failure it reports that input and output voltages are still around 248V (240V is nominal). The only

Problem after crash during yum update
I was doing a "yum -y update" on a CentOS 4.5 system to get to 4.6 when my system froze. I couldn't ping it nor switch to an alternate console. It was completely frozen. The only recourse was to cycle the power. So I did that, and now when I try to do a "yum update" I get the following error: [many package header downloads deleted] tkinter-2.3.4-14.4.el4_6.

install failure
Hello, i am trying to install "Middle School Success Essentials" from Topics Education, on my 0.9.28 wine installation, which works OK with some MS progs. The initial (unpacking?) progress bar completes and then i get the error below, without any recourse. Does anyone have any ideas? (FWIW, the error is shown in the installer box when you click on the "Details" button). TIA

[OT] (slightly) - OpenOffice Calc and text files
Hello all, I had a very strange looking problem that turned out to be due to unexpected (by me at least) format changes to one of my data files. We have a small lab study in which each run is represented by a row in a tab-delimited file; each row identifies a repetition of the experiment and associates it with some subjective measurements and times from our notes that get used to index another

xlsx problem
Dear list, I'm running windows xp with R 2.12.0. I'm trying to load a excel spreadsheet into R using the xlsx package. I posted my code below with the error I get. > res <- read.xlsx("Copy of test_excel_input_data.xlsx", 6) Error in .jcall("RJavaTools", "Ljava/lang/Object;", "invokeMethod", cl, : java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot get

Reading Excel Formulas as values
When I read excel files using the read.xlsx() command any cells that have formulas in them come up as NA. Is there a way to read just the numeric value of the cell without using the "paste value" command in Excel? I need to read in hundreds of Excel spreadsheets and compile them into one large super spreadsheet automatically. Hence the reason I cannot reformat each sheet manually.

Re: Rosetta Stone
Here is my experience with Rosetta Stone: I am SO unhappy with Rosetta Stone. I purchased a RS language program from a vendor who was using a fake licensing certificate and stolen credit cards to buy thousands of RS products and resell them. The guy is now in jail and was ordered to pay restitution to Rosetta Stone. I only found this out when I contacted them to get a deactivation code to

Changing default nic and storage types
Hi, Simple question that I can't track down any notable discussion about, let alone an answer... Is it possible to define what the "default" nic and storage types are? I am deploying images out of cobbler using koan and all of them are running virtio wherever applicable, but this is not the default, and at present there is no way within koan or cobbler to define what type of

Read.table for macs
Dear All, I've been using R for windows for a while, without too many problems. However, I'm forced to use the MAC OS system for teaching, because our teaching labs are mac only (not my idea!!). I have a very basic problem, but one that doesn't appear on the FAQs. I simply want to import data from a spreadsheet. I'm using exactly what works fine on Windows, namely: 1 save

Problems migrating from WBEL
Hi folks: I've recently migrated one of my production servers (bad Jason!) from WBEL to CentOS 3.3 using Donavan's instructions in the FAQ (http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19). While it was as painless as the document suggests, I've run into problems with postgrey (a postfix greylisting daemon) on my server. Whenever I try to start postgrey, I get the

Staging area for data before read into R
I am wondering if there is a better alternative than Excel for data storage that does not require database knowledge (I will eventually have to learn this, but it is not on my immediate todo list). I need something that is not limited to 256 columns... I don't need any of the built in functions in excel just a spreadsheet like program with cells that hold data in a data.frame format for a
