Performance & capacity characteristics of R?
I hope this is merely a FAQ, and not an AFAQ (annoyingly....).
I'm a SAS programmer, with several years' experience of the system,
evaluating alternatives. See the SAS for Linux website (URL in sig) for
more info.
I'm exploring R's capabilities and limitations. I'd be very interested
in having a deeper understanding of it capacity and performance
limitations in dealing with

Spearman's analysis
I have computed correlation coefficients for my dissertation data using
Spearman's Rho with adjustments for tie scores; however, I do not have access
to a way to find exact p's. I have a friend who has R but he doesn't know if
it is appropriate for my analysis, given the constraint of tie scores? Can
you advise me? Thanks. Michele Fagan

R as a daemon?
I have a GNU/Linux / Unix application in which I'd like to have an R
process running in a persistant state, while receiving instructions (and
data) from another process, and returning results to this process.
My initial thoughts are to set something up with named pipes or such,
but I believe that the R process will terminate when it reads EOF (^D)
from the input pipe. The client process is

qt with ncp?
Does anybody has a function or idea how to calculate qt with a noncentrality
parameter? I'm porting a SAS-macro for equivalence (Wellek, 1994 TT2ST) to R
and it seems that I need this to calculate tinv (SAS-command, I hope that
this is R's qt,...I get the SAS-macro manual next week).
thanks

problem with nil.user
Hi all, I''ve put new code into my app so that an administrator will have
extra privileges (administer users, edit pages). The error is:
''Couldn''t find User without an ID''
So the app is looking for a logged in user when the homepage is
accessed.
Heres my code:

by & tapply
Rers,
I have been using the function 'by' in such a manner:
by(LogMetric, list(Loci.Number=Loci.Number, Code.Flag=Code.Flag), plot)
with
par(mfrow=c(5,3))
to produce a single R Graphics: Device with 14 different plots on it as
described above in my 'by' statement. Thank you for helping me thus far.
A similar command using 'tapply' can be written as well.

incompatibilities between 0.90 and 0.99?
Maybe this is dumb, but I seem to be having problems reading a file saved in R
v. 0.99 into R 0.90.1 (in a different machine).
I did
>save(test1, file="test1.RData")
then I tried to read that data file in R 0.90.1:
>load("test1.RData")
Error in load("test1.RData") : restore file corrupted -- no data loaded
More info:
- both machines are running Linux;

Error reverting back to a previous version of rails
I want to revert back to a previous version of rails (1.2.3) but the
project I want to work on was created in 2.0.2. I have uninstalled 2.0.2
and gem installed 1.2.3 but when I run script\server I get the following
error. (I''m guessing its to do with my environment file but I''m pretty
new to Rails so Im not sure.)

Application Options
I am trying to execute a program under rh 7.2 with an application switch
'/'. Though the documentation states this is possible I have been
unable to execute with success.
I have tried many escape variations for the slash but that has not
worked either.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Statistical / data mining methods in R and not in SAS?
Hi, and sorry for asking such an unspecific question.
Does anybody know of statistical / data mining methods that are available in R
that are not in SAS ? With SAS I mean the SAS System Version 9.4 and SAS
Enterprise Miner. I don't expect a complete list, just two or three examples
or hints where and what to look for.
I found some older comparisons, and the R methods mentioned there

Unable to load Models which reference plugins?
I''m using a plugin which adds a method to ActiveRecord::Base
http://similetimelinerailshelper.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/simile_timeline/
This adds an "acts_as" type declaration to the Models, via the file in
vendor/plugins/simile_timeline/lib/simile_timeline.rb Rails is working
with these declarations, and they are being used successfully in

Samba LDAP Tools
I am looking for some good tools to manage Samba users in LDAP. It
looks like there are several good tools mentioned on the Samba Wiki, but
I am concerned mostly with the proper addition of new users to LDAP, in
particular, generating unique SIDs. smbldap-useradd, for example,
generates the SIDs for primary user and group based off of a simple
formula based on the UID and GID, whereas Samba

File timestamps off one hour
I'm seeing timestamps off one hour in Windows 200 and XP clients that
were modified earlier this year before the +1 hour daylight savings
time. They show correctly when views from the Ubuntu Linux Server
running Samba 3.2.3-1ubuntu3.8. As a test, I created three files in
Linux at 00:13, 01:13, and 03:13. I could not create a file during 2 am

Data Mining Survey
Dear R-Helpers,
SAS Institute just mailed out the notice below regarding a survey of
people who do data mining. To help keep the survey from becoming biased
toward commercial software, I thought it would be good to post it here
as well.
Cheers,

When I install the new RPM for Mandrake 8.1, it fails and cannot find:

Value lables, variable lables
I'm looking for an analogy to SPSS and "variable lable" and "value
lable" in R. I have a copy of S+4.0 and can't find any info in their
docs, and don't find it in R-intro either.
In SPSS, for each variable, there is a name like
VAR001
and a variable lable (a longer descriptive string) like
Respondent ID
and for many of the values of other variables there are
