text works with the postscript device?
Dear R experts,
R (0.63) does not seem to write me any text in a PS file.
Trying
x11()
plot(12)
text(5,5, "Hello World")
works fine.
Now I would like to have the same as a PS file.
postscript("foobar.ps")
plot(12)
text(5,5,"Hello World")
dev.off()
Gives me a PS file with the plot -- but without the
"Hello World".
Why? I'm completely clueless.

performance observation on redhat
Hi,
I made an interesting observation using webservers (not just mongrel) under red hat enterprise
linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 5). Maybe this is helpful or somebody with deeper networking
expertise can comment on this.
Once client said that 1-2% of the response of our server were unacceptably slow (really huge 3s-21s).
So I did more ab and httperf tests and notice that very few

introduction slides for beginners
Hi all,
does anybody have slides for a 1 to 3 hour crash course into R,
that I would be allowed to recycle to show a few people the light?
On the R-website http://cran.r-project.org/other-docs.html
I found several additional books, but no slides.
It might be nice to add a page with slides, too.
Thank you,

border option working in barplots? (R0.63)
Dear R users,
How do you set the color of the border in barplots?
On my screen
barplot(tN, col='gray', border='yellow')
looks like grey bars -- with black borders (not yellow).
Trying it with a postscript device gives the same result.
Cheers,
Armin

use of R in big companies (references) & R-support esp in Germany
Dear R users,
sorry for this general email and I am sure it has been asked
way too many times.
IT departements in big companies only want to support the big
standards. Whatever big standards means apart from being expensive.
We are in the process of trying to get a risk management project
for a big conservative company in Germany. As part of the project
we would use R to run simulations,

Timesheet application for Rails
Hi all,
I am looking for some time tracking software for our small company. Does
anyone knows if such project on rails exists? I need simple
functionality such as recording spent time for employees and managing
projects or tasks. Ideally, it would be possible to integrate it into
Instiki and to some existing database. There are some other solutions,
but it seems to me that RoR would be ideal

R binary for Solaris 5.6 (sparc) available?
Dear R gurus,
I have some problems to compile R on Solaris 5.6.
I wonder if somebody has a compiled version he could
email me as tar.gz. Many thanks in advance.

P.S.: Below you see the error message I get
when compiling, i.e. make R
~/R/src% make
(cd ../include; make FFTab.h)
`FFTab.h' is up to date.
(cd ../include; make FFDecl.h)
`FFDecl.h' is up to date.

trivial axis question?
Hi,
probably there's some parameter I don't know how to set.
Using R 0.64 on a Sun sparc, I use the following command
axis(1, at=xspos(times), labels=result, cex.axis=0.7)
where result is sth. like c("May", "Jun" ,"Jul" ,"Aug", "Sep", ...)
Now it plots it fine.. but when two xspos are too (?) close together
the label gets dropped.

Trying again: KDE fails with a gray screen after login, can't reinstall
I set for graphical mode, I get the login screen, I change to KDE, and
the screen goes black, then after minutes, gray with a cursor, and
that's it - I left it overnight, no change.
Brand new install (as of yesterday). Missed any "agree to license", and
missed choosing software. Manually groupinstalled

Gray levels
The gray (level) function returns different shades of gray, where level is a vector of numbers ranging from 0 to 1.? 0 is white and 1 is black and everything in between is a shade of gray.
Is there a function that will let me choose two different colors?? For example, a 0 might be blue and 1 might be red and in between might be a mix.

Legend with fill = gray ?
Hi,
I am facing a problem with the legend, I don?t know how to use the fill
option in the legend in order to achieve the same standard gray levels
that are plotted.
Sorry for this easy one, but I really did not find anything so far.
It works fine with color:

rownames(mat)<-c("A","B","C")

Gray scale video output from theora
hi all
I guess that *Theora* will convert the input color space (RGB or CMYK or
any) into YUV before it process and encode. (that means theora can operate
on several color space, but it get convert into YUV before process)
Is that true...?
I want to get a gray scale, encoded video output from the *Theora* encoder
while the input video is getting from a web cam (color input and gray scale

If somebody breaks into C, he could get access to the vpn network, right?
Because the keys are there, it will be possible to use them to get access.

Newbie: Barchart Gray with White Grid?
Hello,
I'm just getting in to R, been reading manuals (thanks to all who
provided pointers to good docs!), and messing with different commands.
I'd appreciate a little help with this exploration, and I hope that my
question is relatively easy to answer (probably, there's a simple way
to do what I'm working toward).
R's statistical functions are coming along easily enough,

color vectors other than gray()
I'm trying to create a graph where different cells of a grid (a shapefile)
will be painted with a color share scale, where the most easy way is to use
gray().
Can I somehow get a vector (gradient) of colors, a vector of colors with
other methods but gray()?
I'm doing this until now
