make error for R 2.13.0 (and 2.12.0)
Regarding Tengfei Yin's post about an error trying to install
"cluster" in 2.13.0, I have gotten an error with this package when
trying to install the released version of 2.12.0. Here is the output
on an Ubuntu Linux system:

beginner programming question
Hi all,
The last e-mails about beginners gave me the courage to post a question;
from a beginner's perspective, there are a lot of questions that I'm
tempted to ask. But I'm trying to find the answers either in the
documentation, either in the about 15 free books I have, either in the
help archives (I often found many similar questions posted in the past).
Being an (still actual)

Change of parsing parameters to functions between 0.63.1 and 0.63.3 ?
Hi,
I wonder whether the mechanism of parsing parameters to functions has
changed between 0.63.1 and 0.63.3? The following code yeils different
results in R 0.63.1 (Version 0.63.1 (Dec 5, 1998)) and R 0.63.3.
cave<-function(x,a,b)
{
return(c(mean(x[a],na.rm=T),mean(x[b],na.rm=T)))
}
datx <- data.frame(rbind(c(1,2,3,4),c(4,5,6,7)))

loading fortran with Redhat 5.1
Hi All,
I'm running R 0.63 on Redhat 5.1 and when I attempt
to load a fortran routine I get:
> dyn.load("/home/royle/Rstuff/varna.o")
Error in dyn.load(x) : unable to load shared library "/home/royle/Rstuff/varna.o"
this function varna.o was compiled with:
gcc -c varna.f
with no errors or warnings.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks! (and thanks to

R-beta: S+ toolboxes in R?
Hi,
I guess the answer is negative but I thought I would ask just
the same: is it possible to use any of the S+ toolboxes (ARCH
and wavelets, more particularly) with R?
Thanks,

attributes
During the last couple of months (at least) there has been a trickle of
messages on R-help related to attributes (other than dim/dimnames) not being
inherited.
Example:
x <- 1
class(x) <- "test"
class(x+1) [returns NULL, not "test"]
I have not seen a response from anyone in the R-core about this issue.
Since our group uses locally-written code (in S+) that is

package help clobbers R help (html)
As with 0.62.3, when I install my dse package with documentation in 0.62.4 the
html help in R/doc/html/function.html gets clobbered so that the regular R
function help is not available. I was postponing a revised version of my dse
library install in the hope that this might be fixed.
Does anyone know if this is a simple problem that I can hope will be fixed soon,
or should I consider a

relative frequency plot using ggplot or other function
Hi
I have a data frame in the following form. There are two groups and for
each 'width' relative frequency for group1 and group2 is given. How to plot
this in R using ggplot or other package.

Oracle UEK kernel on CentOS
Hello CentOS Guys,
What do you think about the Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel?
Since Release 2 of the UEK Kernel, all updates are available free of
charge > http://public-yum.oracle.com/
My questions:
Does the Oracle UEK kernel really perform better than the default centos kernel?
Technical advantages and disadvantages?
Would you use the Oracle UEK Kernel on centos?

RH5.2 bundle
Hello and Happy New R
Two points:
1 Noting the existence of 0.63.2 as a tgz file on CRAN, but being careful
or lazy depending on how you want to see it, I also note that the binaries
for Redhat stop at 0.63.1 on RH 5.1.
I recently got the RH 5.2 Power Tools where I was pleased to see R 0.62.4
included, lots of libraries including V&R. This had been compiled into an
rpm - does anyone know

R on AIX (>4.2)
Hi,
I'm determined to get R compiling & running on a machine running AIX
4.2. I've seen previous emails in the archive about this topic. The
main obstacle is getting dynamic loading to work, but it works for Tcl
and hence is feasable.
Questions:
- is anybody _currently_ working with R on AIX?
- why have previous fixes to the sources not been introduced into
