R for teaching multivariate statistics (Summary)
Greetings all I promised a summary of the responses that I got to my question: "Next year I will be teaching a third year course in applied statistics about 1/3 of which is multivariate statistics. I would be interested in hearing experiences from those who have taught multivariate statistics using R. Especially I am interested in the textbook that you used or recommended." There

Another newbie book recommandation question
I hope this question is sufficiently different from the other requests for book recommendations that it's not repetitious. If not, I apologize in advance. I'm curious what standard reference books working statisticians, or biostatisticians, have within easy reach of their desk. I'm a computer systems administrator, and have a two-foot bookshelf directory under my monitor that contains

Wanted: online Introduction to R
As a complete newcomer I am attempting to learn to use R, but am finding it extremely difficult because I have not yet found an "Introduction to R". For over a week now I have monitored the R-help list, studied the R-FAQ and related documents, downloaded and run the Windows R and looked at the Help, downloaded early and late samples of the R-help archives, and searched for illuminating

Merge?
I see that feature freeze for a better than ever R has been announced. May I ask if there will be or could be "merge" function for data frames? I believe it would be very nice if this were "centrally" implemented (with regard to my humble steps to writing such a function and the related error and other precautions). I know from VR2R.pdf (courtesy Profs. Venables and Ripley)

R-beta: Rnotes.tgz
My question is really to Robert and Ross (and also to Bill Venables and Dave Smith) -- but I thought that there might be wider interest in it. The "Notes on R" in the file Rnotes.tgz is copyrighted to the above authors -- can I make copies of it to distribute? I suspect that the intention of the authors is that Rnotes be as re-distributable as R itself. However there is no GNU license

Can tdbtool be installed on it's own?
Hi guys, I have a Netgear ReadyNas that has Samba v3.4.5 installed on it. I'm having trouble accessing some tdb files and I'm wondering whether the app tdbtool can be installed on its own as it seems that Netgear have pulled it out. I have windows domain users who get denied access for no reason and the events aren't being caught my the standard logs. Plus Netgear force the smb.conf

Inconsistent results from .C()
Hello, I've run into a problem which is both maddening and rather hard to replicate, therefore I wondered if someone might know of a plausible explanation for it. I couldn't find anything in the archives, though maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing. I'm calling some C code using .C, and get the vector I'm interested in back as the 7th location in the returned list.

Write and Load functions from an external file
Hi All, Would be grateful,if anyone can answer my queries. I need to share code. For example, if I am working in C/C++, I would put some function declarations in .h files that you would include. In PHP, I would create files with the common functions in them and then "include()" them. So far, I haven't been able to figure out what the standard practice is in R. The two options
