Linux libc5.4.33 dumbness w/ mk[s]temp()
Linux libc5.4.33''s mk[s]temp() functions require 6 X''s at the end of
a filename (the BSD versions I''ve seen are a bit more flexible). This alone
is enough to break any claims to real BSD compatability, but wait, there''s
more:
Only 1 of those 6 X''s are really unique. The rest are simply pid.
So you can create exactly 62 temp files using mk[s]temp()

IceCast 1.3.11: Segmentation Violation in Linux
*sigh* Yes, you're right... It _has_ been a few years. My drive is
filling up and all, I probably have tons of old/vulnerable daemons, so
it's probably time for a fresh install. I'll let you know what turns
up!

User time and system time
I am running the R-0.62.0 snapshot on a Linux system. This system has
128 Mb of real memory and almost never swaps. I am trying to use
lme() on a very large example (7200 observations, 10 columns in the
fixed effects, 2 columns in the random effects). We have the
optimization nicely tuned so that goes relatively quickly. It seems,
though, that all the data manipulation steps before the

Debian package for R-0.61 uploaded
I have uploaded a Debian package r-base_0.61.0-2_i386.deb to the
incoming directory at ftp.ci.tuwien.ac.at. This package is built
against libc5, not libc6. Turns out that was a bit more complicated
than I had hoped.
I have also created an RPM file for the same binary distribution and
will upload that shortly as r-base-0.61.0-2.i386.rpm. I enclose some
information regarding the two packaged

Linux SMB Mount utils patch
Hi,
I'm sure that you are all aware that the mount utilities that ship
with samba are designed to compile and run only with Linux 2.1 series
development kernels.
I'll _try_ keep this short and sweet while doing my best to
explain what I have done, since I have a tendancy to ramble on. I
have two boxes, one Linux with libc5, and another with Linux and Glibc2
(aka libc6). The Samba

Linux 2.2.0 and Samba client not happening for me
Dudes and/or Dudettes:
HEEELLLPPP! (such a newbie statement)
I can't get my remote SMB mounts to work on my Linux box.
duke was happily running Slackware Linux 2.0.36 and Samba 1.9.18p8 .
I upgraded to Linux 2.2.0pre9 (2.2.0final), which seemed to require
upgrading to Samba 2.0.0 . (I don't remember the exact errors)
Now i can't get my NT and '95 disks to stay mounted on

R-beta: compiling R-0.62.3 on SuSe Linux
On my RedHat 5.1 machine at the office I am happily using R
installed from Martyn Plummer's RPM's of R-62.3 for RH 5.1
At home I have SuSe Linux 5.3 on my PC and as RH 5.1 is libc6
based and SuSe 5.3 is still libc5 based the RH 5.1 RPM's do
not install and work on SuSe (even though they have a test
version of glibc).
So I downloaded R-0.62.3.tgz from www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R and
tried

PXElinux question - not in FAQ
Peter, we have met in Cyber space looong time ago, when I was requesting
10:minor numbers for the Netwinder project....
Now I am trying to build a network boot for Xandros distribution.
I have it working, however I need to do 2 DHCP cycles - 1 happens in
PXE, and then it repeats in my network boot code (based on BusyBox). All
I need in the second stage is the NFS image address, passed by DHCP

Old (really old) programs under CentOS.
Ok, I have a small dilemma, and I'm hoping someone here has had to do this before.
I have at a site (not PARI) a server running some mission critical software that was written in 1997 for libc5, under AOLserver 2.3.? No, source code is not available for that version of AOLserver (it wasn't open-sourced until version 3.0, and the API changed rather dramatically at that point), not that it

Odd issue with 7.7.1908 updated with qemu-kvm-ev
So, I have a client that has an internal use application that needs an
ancient version of libc5.? That's not a typo; libc5.? Before the server
that ran it died about a year and a half ago (said server was an AMD
K6-2/450 with a 6GB Western Digital Caviar drive that had been spinning
nearly continuously for almost 20 years!) it was running on Red Hat
Linux 5.2.? The last version of CentOS

MSG: sequence number gap
Hi,
I have created a chained Ogg Vorbis file containing 26 files in 75304323
bytes using the Unix 'cat' utility. When I run the file through 'ogginfo'
I get the message:
Warning: sequence number gap in stream 26. Got page

This is what I have determined:

Need a bit of 'archeocomputing' help on CentOS 7.
I have an application with is binary-only, does its job well, and is
only available for either libc5 (!) or early early glibc2.0 (!!). It has
been running on a Red Hat Linux 5.2 (NOT RHEL; RHL) server for a really
long time, and it honestly does its job and it's not easily replaced by
an open-source solution at the moment.
So, I need to do one of the following things:
1.) Run Red Hat
