Thank you for the information that you have passed on to me. My own research has found that ftruncate is quite happy to set a file to the same size that it is already, so something else must be causing the problem. The comment before the ftruncate in set_share_mode says the file is being truncated just for safety, so normally it is probably not necessary to truncate the file. Regards, Tim >

I am trying to get a measure of how R compares in usage as a statistical platform compared to other software. I would guess it is the most widely used among statisticians at least by virtue of it being open source. But is there any study to which I can refer? Are there any problems envisaged in trying to move 4.2->4.3, 4.3->4.4 and 4.4->5.0, using yum upgrade and changing the repositories at each stage?
