R-alpha: nlm and gradients
At present the documentation for nlm refers the reader to Dennis and Schnabel for details on the algorithms. It also states that the function is liable to change. Can anyone tell me if the current version of nlm uses only function values or if it can use gradients and Hessians when they are available? I would like to get an idea of how difficult it would be to port the development versions of

Hello R-helpers, I tried to do "make test" , and it is failing: data() Error: stack overflow ?data Error: Stack overflow data(rivers) Error: incorrect tag type R also initially it balked at: apropos("\\\\[") So, I skipped it :-) This stuff is working on R-0.50-a4 that I have. R-alpha: NextMethod in 0.50-a4
I am encountering difficulty with NextMethod in 0.50-a4. We created a class of groupedData objects which are data.frames with additional attributes. The most important attribute is a formula describing roles of some of the variables in the experimental design. The class of such objects ends in "groupedData", "data.frame". The print method for the groupedData class simply

R-alpha: model.matrix misbehaves on two-sided formulas
I am using R for a graduate class on linear models that I teach. I sent the class a sample transcript of explicit construction of the model matrix and use of the QR decomposition. One of the members of the class picked up on the fact that the model matrix was not what I advertised that it should be when a two-sided formula is used. A one-sided formula works properly. For example, >

R-beta: Pictex and R
Dear R-users It is me again with my interminables questions... This time it is about "pictex". I understood that pictex allows us to put our graph in a latex file I have try the function: > pictex (file=...) and the answer was: "pictex" not found... Does it mean that it is not an R-function yet? Thank you for any feedback. Halima from Leiden

R-beta: Debian 2.0 and R
I am trying to compile R on my Debian 2.0 machine. I have both gcc and egcc (required for g77). Since the configure script doesn't check for egcc I used CC=egcc (even used LDCMD=egcc) in the config.site file. Everything worked fine until the final binary where it tries to use gcc ....... egcc -g -I../include -c unique.c egcc -g -I../include -c util.c egcc -g -I../include -c

R-beta: R-0.50-a4 library problem (survival4)
I have built R-0.50-a4 on HP9000/C160-hpux10.2 with gcc (cc for libs). When I try library(survival4) Error in pos.to.env(pos) : invalid "pos" argument And it does not load. Other libs seem to work. I tested integrate (has f2c translated c), polynomial. Is this a problem with my system only??? TIA osman =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Dynamically switching lattice device characteristics in Sweave under Makefile control
I am indebted to Deepayan Sarkar for lattice graphics, Fritz Leisch for Sweave and the authors of the beamer package for LaTeX. For me these are a "killer app" combination. I wouldn't want to go back to creating presentations in any other way. When I create a presentation I use a Makefile that allows me to the presentation version of the slides, a 4-up version for printing on

R-beta: updating the library index / overriding compile options
Would it be possible to include a new command in the ${RHOME}/etc path, which updates the Library index (Rd and html) via "R LIBINDEX". I need it because I use RPM to manage three different R installations (at home, at the institute and in the seminar rooms). I put all libraries into several packages, so it is easy for me to update a single library at all these different places. But

[OT] LaTeX peculiarities in Ubuntu 9.10 beta
I am running the beta test version of Ubuntu 9.10, x86_64 on a machine and encountered some peculiarities in LaTeX called through R-devel CMD texi2pdf file.tex The tilde character in the input, which should produce a non-breaking space, is now being rendered as a tilde. Does anyone know where I could begin exploring for explanations and/or workarounds?

R-beta: R-0.62.1 under Digital Unix
I am grateful for the advice of Douglas Bates on my earlier problem in making R-0.62.1, but I'm afraid I'm still having problems.... I have been installing the various updates to R for quite some time on my alpha, and it is only now that I have been having really severe problems. The three or 4 versions before 0.61.1 installed without error. For 0.61.1 I needed to install GNU make. For

Variance-covariance matrix for beta hat and b hat from lme
Dear all, Given a LME model (following the notation of Pinheiro and Bates 2000) y_i = X_i*beta + Z_i*b_i + e_i, is it possible to extract the variance-covariance matrix for the estimated beta_i hat and b_i hat from the lme fitted object? The reason for needing this is because I want to have interval prediction on the predicted values (at level = 0:1). The "predict.lme" seems to

R-beta: image
Questions on image: 1) How can I put labels on the x and y axes? 2) How to tell it to use e.g. 32 grey levels (not some colour map)? 3) How to know what the legend is (i.e. each grey level = what z value)? Thanks very much for any help. BTW I was wondering if persp was on the To Do list. That would be great! Bill Simpson

R-beta: leaps() and subsets() functions
Dear R-users, Is anyone successfully using leaps() and particularly subsets() (contributed function) in R? When I attempt to run them with modest matrices, R promptly faults and dumps the core. Also, how does one use subsets.formula() within subsets()? R : Copyright 1997, Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka Version 0.50 Alpha-4 (September 10, 1997) R-base-0.50.a4-1.i386.rpm

files in CRAN/src/devel/floppies
I have been unable to write the files R-devel-1.tar.gz or R-release-1.tar.gz onto a floppy disk formatted as an MS-DOS floppy. I keep getting the message that they are too big. Is there some technique for squeezing them onto the floppy that I don't know about? -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-devel mailing list -- Read
