LVM-snapshot based KVM VMs
Good m/d/n guys, wanted to put idea through you before trying to implement
this.
So afaik LVM snapshots basically don't take any "real" space on hard drives.
I'm using KVM virtualization on my hosts and let's say i create an LVM
volume for my linux VM, then install it properly, shut it down and take LVM
snapshot of it.
Basically i've just cloned it (LVM2 snapshots are

Hi list,
According to the libvirt documentation [1]
"Show maximum number of virtual CPUs for guest domains on this connection"
This may not be a complete definition.
My first guess from the above was that this returns the number of virtual
CPUs that can exist at the same time on the host, either one or several
VMs. In fact it returned 16 in my fedora 20 desktop running with KVM,

Nested KVM issue
I would attempt to decrease number of VCPUS allocated to cloud VMs.
Say try 4 => 2 . My guess there is not enough VCPUs to run OS itself.
I also guess CPU model << Haswell. Please , confirm ( or not) if possible.
Since Haswell was launched via my experience Intel Xeons based on this kernel (or latter kernels ) behaves much better then SandyBridge or IvyBridge based.
Boris.

virtio-win for c6?
Hi there,
I know it's in the supplementary channel and there is no srpm to rebuild
windows drivers.
But are these drivers anywhere available so that I can use them without
a rhn subscription?
Thx

credit1 scheduler question.
Hey George,
I was wondering if you could explain in simple terms how the scheduler would
handle per-physical CPU when there are say 16 guests (each guest is using
one VCPU), 32 physical CPUs and dom0 is not restricted to any CPUs. Would
the scheduler per physical CPU schedule: guest, dom0, guest, dom0, and so
on; or would it be more random? (I assume that both guest and dom0 would do

Reports posted look good for me. Config should provide the best available performance
for cloud VM (L2) on Compute Node.
1. Please, remind me what goes wrong from your standpoint ?
2. Which CPU is installed on Compute Node && how much RAM ?
Actually , my concern is :-
Number_of_ Cloud_VMs versus Number_CPU_Cores ( not threads)
Please, check `top` report in

any opinions on debian vs. opensuse for Xen?
Hi Folks,
I''ve been getting just a little fed up with the state of Xen on Debian
Lenny - there are a couple of known bugs that lead to periodic kernel
panics - but fixes haven''t made it into the Lenny distribution. I''m
sort of waiting to see how things shake out with Debian Squeeze, when it
becomes stable, but...
I''ve been noticing that Suse (both the

strange phenomenon on CPU affinity
Hello,
My testing machine has 2 quad-core CPU (It supports hyperthreading,
but i disable it in BIOS). I uses Xen 4.0.1 as the hypervisor. When I use 8
VMs to conduct a test, CPU affinity of the VMs is very strange. Like this:
vm_name vcpu_num cpu_affinity
Domain-0 8 any
VM1 4 1,3,5,7
VM2 4 1,3,5,7
VM3 4 1,3,5,7

How can a bridge be optimized?
Hi,
Netperf tells me that a KVM VM using a bridged connection to a system across
the Gigabit LAN sees on average about 1/10th of the bandwidth the host sees.
This is on very lightly loaded hosts, although with multiple low-use VMs.
I've tried adjusting the CPU throttling after seeing that mentioned as a
possible factor in slowing down a bridge, but it has not much if any effect
here.

Kerberos/LDAP authentication no more working in 5.6 ?
Hi all,
I just upgraded more servers, and doing some tests I found that my setup
for kerberos/ldap authentication against Active Directory is no more
working. I don't know why...
I followed some times ago scott Lowe blog for this setup :
http://blog.scottlowe.org/2007/01/15/linux-ad-integration-version-4/
And it was working correctly until the upgrade. What is curious is that

Xen credit scheduler question
Hi all (and Mr. Dunlap in particular),
I have a question about the credit (and ultimately credit2) scheduler that I hope you can help me with.
I have read the white paper "Scheduler development update" and as much material on the credit scheduler as I can find, but I am still not completely clear on how I should think about the cap.
Example scenario:

Xen system hang or freeze
Hi all,
This is my first post to the list, I hope someone out there can help!
I am running xen 3.0.3, with CentOS 5.2 based Dom0
(kernel-xen-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5)
Recently I have noticed some complete system lockups on a few different
servers. Neither Dom0 or any of the guests respond to pings, connecting a
keyboard and monitor to the system only shows a blank screen. Nothing is
written to logs

NUMA support on Xen ?
Hi,
I am a Masters student from Carnegie Mellon University. I am looking for a research topics for an Advanced OS & DS course we have.
I wanted to know what is the current support for NUMA on Xen ?
Does it support the IBM x440 and AMD64 Opteron ?
Also, does the Xen scheduler do NUMA aware scheduling so it does not degrade the VM performace ?

[PATCH 0 of 3] xen: sched_credit: fix tickling and add some tracing
Hello,
This small series deals with some weirdness in the mechanism with which the
credit scheduler choses what PCPU to tickle upon a VCPU wake-up. Details are
available in the changelog of the first patch.
The new approach has been extensively benchmarked and proved itself either
beneficial or harmless. That means it does not introduce any significant amount
of overhead and/or performances

Live Migration and LibVirt CPU Mode
