Migrating standalone systems to KVM
A while ago I got great instructions from Pasi for migrating standalone systems to *xen*. However, now I have decided to use KVM instead, which raises a new question: How to migrate a standalone system to *KVM*? I know a two-step way to do it: standalone system -> xen pv guest xen pv guest -> KVM pv guest I read that xen -> KVM migration is trivially easy. But is there an easier

booting clonezilla *.iso via PXE fails
Hallo, I'm just trying to boot a Clonezilla *.iso (live-20100521-lucid) via PXE; Label clonezilla kernel memdisk append iso raw initrd iso/clonezilla.iso The first step is ok - I see the boot menu of the *.iso. When I choose "Clonezilla live" the system fails with Isolinux: Disk error 02, AX = 4224, drive E0 when I choose "freedos" it fails with

clonezilla
The clonezilla live project is a really nice way to do image-copies of machines: http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/clonezilla-live/ but it's based on a Debian live OS which has some unfamiliar quirks. Has anyone built something like this on a Centos base? For anyone who hasn't seen it, it can do whole disk or partition copies of windows and most Linux filesystems and it knows enough to

Clonezilla SE with CentOS5
Hi all, I'm looking for a cloning solution for our Windows/Linux/*nix computer park and ran into Clonezilla. Apparantely the DRBL and other documentation mentions CentOS as a suitable base for it. Does anybody on this list use this solution and can say something about it in the running-Clonezilla-with-CentOS-context, be it recommendations, gotchas', warnings or whatever? Thanks. -- BW,

Acronis True Image or Clonezilla
I want to clone a small (80GB) disk on my CentOS server to a large (1.5TB) disk, as smart has been giving me warnings of unreadable sectors. Both disks are Western Digital, and WD has a WD version of Acronis True Image. I'm not sure whether to use this or Clonezilla. My worry with Acronis is that I want to keep the original disk, and I'm not sure from the documentation if True Image

Sendmail error: auxpropfunc error invalid parameter supplied
I just noticed this error in my messages log after restarting sendmail. The only change I have made is 1) manual fix in /usr/share/spamassassin/72_active.conf 2) sa-update (several times) Now the mail is not running ok, my mail queue keeps growing. Regards, Jussi Hirvi

issues when add driverdisk to centos5.6 using NFS method
Hi, I am Ken.. I am trying to add dud(driver update disk) to centos5.6 using network method, I can successfully add dud to centos5.6 using http and ftp method, but fail when using nfs method. However those all three methods are officially supported in the centos5.6. As indicated in the centos5.6 website, we can see they not only support http, ftp, but also nfs.

Fsck on mdraid array
Something seems to be wrong with my file systems, and I want to fsck everything. But I cannot. The setup consists of 2 hds, carrying 3 raid1 (ext3) file systems (boot, /, swap). OS is up-to-date CentOS 5. So I boot from CentOS 5.3 dvd in rescue mode, do not mount the file systems, and try to run fsck -y /dev/md0 fsck -y /dev/md1 fsck -y /dev/md2 For each try I get an error message:

Old hd, new machine
What should I do to make an existing CentOS (5.4) disc boot up on a new computer? I just made on CentOS 5.3 installation on that machine, so I know the hardware is compatible. Would it be enough to boot with a DVD in rescue mode, or boot with another hd, and install grub? - Jussi -- Jussi Hirvi * Green Spot Topeliuksenkatu 15 C * 00250 Helsinki * Finland Tel. +358 9 493 981 * Mobile +358

Retrieving POP mail from server to server
I need to transfer a client's email inbox from another mail server to our mail server (Centos 5). This is needed once only (or maybe a couple of times). What is the best command-line tool? Fetchmail? I did this once before, with another tool, but have forgotten. - Jussi -- Jussi Hirvi * Green Spot Topeliuksenkatu 15 C * 00250 Helsinki * Finland Tel. +358 9 493 981 * Mobile +358 40 771

I just tried it and it will not work. this is xen 4.1.2 and clonzilla-live 1.2.10-14 the disk line is: disk = [ ''phy:/dev/xvg0/nfdlts-c,hda,w'', ''file:/extra/isoimages/clonzilla.iso,hdc:cdrom,r'' ] It boots cd OK. The problem is devices are xvda not hda and clonzilla is not happy with

Feed a list of filenames to vim
There are some googlable ways to feed a list of filenames to vim, but I stumble on weird results. With my filelist, I try to do cat list | xargs vim ...to edit the files listed in the file "list". Here's what happens: [root at lasso2 tempdir]# ls -l total 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 17 18:28 a -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 17 18:28 b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3 May 17

Disk quotas for Sendmail
Hi, CentOS 5.x, Sendmail 8.13.8. I would like to start using disk quotas on my Sendmail server, and optimally they should be configurable by user or group. How can this be done? (I tried to google, but no success.) - Jussi -- Jussi Hirvi * Green Spot Topeliuksenkatu 15 C * 00250 Helsinki * Finland Tel. & fax +358 9 493 981 * Mobile +358 40 771 2098 (only sms) jussi.hirvi at greenspot.fi *

Installing 4.4 - problem on 386
I tried installing with several options (noacpi noapm; noprobe; noprobe skipddc noacpi noapm nodma). Always I get the same error. BUT this is not in fac a CentOS problem at all, because I get the same error always when I boot from hd (Fedora Core), IF there is a CD in the CD-ROM drive. (I tried with CentOS 1/4, CentOS 2/4 and a HP printer software CD.) It must be something with the CD drive!

Hard disk, format, filesystem
Ok, I give up... I have to ask. This is CentOS 5. I switched one of my raid1 disks, and I already thought I had succeeded. But now it seems that something is very wrong with the first partition on the new disk. Luckily my system is fully bootable with the other disk. Here's some info. The new disk is sdb. // I removed all partitions with parted, and created the first one again. // parted

VMware vSphere Hypervisor (free ESXi) and mdraid

KVM resources?
Later this week I will have to install a serious KVM setup, and I am looking for background material. I found a nice how-to: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/KVM ...but it is probably partly outdated by now. Then there is a fine virtualization manual: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Virtualization/ ...but it seems to be only for xen. I plan to use either CentOS 5.6 or Scientific Linux

Openwebmail emergency (Perl)
After system update yesterday, Openwebmail now gives an error: > Undefined subroutine &Compress::Zlib::memGzip called at /var/www/cgi-bin/openwebmail/shares/ow-shared.pl line 1175. I tried to do perl -MCPAN -e shell install Compress::Zlib But it says Compress::Zlib is up-to-date. What do to?? I cannot find an answer by googling. - Jussi -- Jussi Hirvi * Green Spot Topeliuksenkatu 15

File sharing solution
I would like to offer my isp clients a solution for sharing (big) files, basically on one-to-one basis. This is how I imagine it: - an anonymous or registered user can upload a file - on response (s)he will get a file-specific (or batch-specific) username/password - (s)he can send a link and un/pw by email - the receiver can download the file - the file will be automatically deleted from the
