What are KVM guest cores?
Hi All, What are guest cores in KVM? Are they fake, like everything else in the guest? Just another process running on the host emulating a core? Or are the guest cores actually connected directly to the physical cores on my motherboard? Many thanks, -T

Need sub for virtual box
Hi All, I am running Virtual box on a CentOS 5.5 x64 bit host. The guest is 23 bit Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2). Virtual Box bug 7606 is causing a customer of mine serious financial harm. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/7607#comment:3 I have tried in vain month or month over month to get Oracle to sell me a tech support contract, so that we can get some priority on this issue.

Problems with hyperthreading in Windows HVM
Hi, I have been trying to get Hyperthreading to work in a Windows HVM on Xen 4.1.2 as described in ''xmexample.hvm''. I think I have set it up correctly, but I can''t seem to get it to work. There is not much documentation on it and most topics are from years ago. I''m curious to know to whether this functionality is still supposed to work. I''m aware that

Why is irqbalance not balancing?
I am running irqbalance with default configuration on an Atom 330 machine. This CPU has 2 physical cores + 2 SMT (aka Hyperthreading) cores. As shown below the interrupt for the eth0 device is always on CPUs 0 and 1, with CPUs 2 and 3 left idle. But why? Maybe irqbalance prefers physical cores? My understanding, though, is that the even-numbered CPUs are the physical cores, with the

asterisk and multiple cpus/cores
I have found a site that list the following (no date in the post, so it may be old): "since all transcoding and calls still go through one core in asterisk, it doesn't make sense to buy a multi-core or hyperthreaded system that will only slow you down" Does that still applies in asterisk 1.2.14/1.4.x ? Or do we have to tweak source code to balance loads (transcoding, etc) between

intel dual core processors and new kernel packages
I've just got bunch of RHEL4 erratas (looks like U2 is out). Looking at the kernel errata (kernel-2.6.9-22.EL), one of the things in list of new features is "Intel dual core support". What does this exactly means? Does it mean if I have dual core pentium processor and use older kernel that it will use only one core, and I need newer kernel to use both cores? Or is it only

P4 processor with Hyperthreading and Asterisk
Hello, I read an interesting article on 2cpu.com that talks about the performance differences between a P4 processor with Hyperthreading(HT) enabled and disabled. http://www.2cpu.com/articles/ht_explored/index.html The bottom line of the article is that processor intensive applications greatly benefit from HT being enabled, but memory intensive applications can actually see a slight decrease in

Question: How to utilize multi-core CPUs
I've installed CentOS 6.3 on a quad-four box. The model only indicated dual core but CentOS is telling me there are four. This is the first multi-core Linux installation I've had. What is the best way to utilize the multi-core CPUs? I'd like to distribute the load but I'm unsure how to do that. mw -- -- "Lose not thy airspeed, lest the ground rises up and smites

CPU enumeration
Hello, Is it possible to alter how XCP enumerates multi-core cpu’s such that a Vcpu represents a “socket”, rather than a “core”? A server with dual quad core processors, no HT, presents each of the 8 cores as a Vcpu to the guest. Windows Server 2008 R2 see’s each Vcpu as a unique “socket” and we are therefore coming up against licensing issues with Windows and more importantly SQL Server 2008

Adressing multiple cores (CPUs)
Dear all, I'm sitting here just in front of my new PC@work and wonder about the following question: * How can I adress multiple CPUs (cores) out of R to speed up the simulations I run? * What are the prerequisites to do so? Maybe anyone could give me a hint where to start reading? Regards, Thomas P.S.: I searched the R-archive to find an answer but did find none.
