Controlling allocation of ethernet devices and KVM
Running Centos 5.4 with KVM on a Dell R610 server and I'd like to control which of the four ethernet interfaces are used for specific tasks My ideal configuration would be eth0 - Host traffic only, no virtual guests. Used for guest mirroring and management. eth1 - NAT guest traffic only, no address for local machine and in some environments in the same zone as eth0 eth2/3 - Allocated to two

Logrotate/cron and major I/O contention with KVM.
Is anyone else having major I/O peaks due to logrotate or other jobs running simultaneously across multiple guests. I have one KVM server running Centos 5.4 with local disk that is seriously suffering as most of the guests rotate their syslog at the same time. Looking at the KVM server I'm seeing 11:00:01 PM CPU %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 03:40:01 AM

Choices for shared network storage, NFS vs iSCSI
Has anyone here ran performance comparisons between NFS and iSCSI when using network storage for KVM based guests. Also which have people found to be easier for managing live migrates etc. Steve -- Steven Ellis - Bulletin.Net Inc - http://www.bulletin.net

Clock Sources under RHEL/Centos 5.x with KVM and libvirt
I'm wondering under what circumstances the kvm-clock source is exposed to a guest. I've got a bunch of KVM servers running Centos 5.5 and some of the guests have are defaulting to jiffies or apic whilst some are picking up kvm-clock. These guests are a mix of 32bit and 64bit Centos 5.5. Looking at the virtual machine definition file there doesn't appear to be a difference between the

Moving vmware guests to a CentOS KVM server
Hi all, I need to move ten CentOS/RHEL 5.4 vmware guests from a vmware ESXi 4 host to a CentOS 5.4 KVM host (fully patched). But I have two doubts. First: all these guests have two e1000 network drivers defined as a eth0,eth1 and modprobe.conf file is the same on all: alias eth0 e1000 alias eth1 e1000 alias net-pf-10 off options ipv6 disable=1 Can I change e1000 driver to

Enabling KSM with ksmctl under Centos 5.4
Are their any good guides out there on how to use ksmctl to enable and tune KSM performance on Centos/RedHat At the moment the only guidelines I can find are from the following OLS paper, plus the Linux Kernel Docs. * http://www.kernel.org/doc/ols/2009/ols2009-pages-19-28.pdf * http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/vm/ksm.txt On a basic dual core testbed with 4GB Ram and 4-5 VMs I've

KVM: 'ÿ' character after starting a VM via virt-install
I'm unable to start a virtual machine with KVM. I'm using Centos 5.4 I have installed all necessary rpms (to my knowledge), but as you can see from the output (below), the system does not boot the CD-ROM. It just sits there doing nothing: # virt-install --prompt Would you like to use KVM acceleration? (yes or no) yes What is the name of your virtual machine? test How much RAM should

unable to get domain list of KVM guests from libvirt as non-root user
I have a python script that monitors the guest VMs on a servers running Xen, but the script doesn't work properly on a server I just built with KVM. The script runs as a non-root user (same on all servers) and simply gathers some details on the status and names of the domains running on the host. The Xen and KVM servers are running CentOS 5.4 x86_64 and are using the same version of

Sound and VGA resolution for KVM guests
Hi all, Recentlly, I have installed a Windows 7 Enterprise kvm guest under a CentOS 5.4 kvm host (fully updated) using virtio drivers and all works ok except two things: sound and vga resolution. a) How can I increase vga resolution to 1440x900 or is not possible to configure more than 1024x768 when virt-manager is used?? b) I have assigned a sound device to this windows guest (ac97)

using shared storage with libvirt/KVM?
Hello, I've spent a few days googling and reading documentation, but I'm looking for clarification and advise on setting up KVM/libvirt with shared storage. I have 2 (for now) Ubuntu Karmic systems with KVM/virsh/virt-manager set up and running. I have a storage server that can do NFS/iSCSI/samba/ etc. I am trying to figure out the best way to set things up so that I can run

Re: kvm/libvirt on CentOS7 w/Windows 10 Pro guest
Why do you reckon this is to do with your virtualisation system (presumably qemu/kvm, though you don't say) rather than Windows 10? About doing backups with kvm guests
Hi all, I have two centos 5.4 servers that I use to run several windows kvm guests (10). All works ok (more or less) but I have a problem with backups. These windows guests are configured to use lvm partitions as a virtual disks. My problem is when I need to do guests backups. which is the best form to backup and restore these windows guests? Some examples? I see snapshot's lvm

what scheduling algorithm does KVM use?
This may not be the best place to ask, but I was prompted by a question about guest cores on KVM. We currently use VMWare Server (v1.0) on CentOS5. It supports up to two virtual CPUs, but not very well, as I understand it. VMWare Server 2.0 might do better at supporting the same maximum of 2 CPUs, but if my research is correct, they both use what is called "strict co-scheduling".

KVM Guest not using MAC address specified in XML file
Hello: I have a server running Centos 5.4 with KVM. When I specify a MAC address in a guest's XML file: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='00:00:00:00:10:67'/> <source bridge='br0'/> <target dev='v1067'/> </interface> I get a different answer from ifconfig: v1067 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr

bridged kvm guest and ever changing MAC address
Hi, Centos 5.4, dual igb ethernet, kvm guest (Centos 5.4). br0 is connected to eth0, guest has virtio ethernet connected to br0. Guest is configured using virt-manager. When host is booting, br0 gets mac address of eth0. Every time i start guest (with virt-manager) vnet0 appears and br0 mac aadressi on host is changed. Why does it need to change the mac? I'd like to keep it same, not to

[qemu-kvm] Network bandwidth limits via libvirt
Hi all, I try to understand why the interface bandwidth limits are not applied to my Ubuntu 12.04 VM (qemu-kvm driver) and I would need some insights. I spawn my VM with OpenStack and when I issue a dumpxml on my domain, I can see that bandwidth limits are set: <interface type='ethernet'> <mac address='02:68:b5:c6:fa:a5'/> <bandwidth> <inbound
