Re: XCP which management console to use - plus XenServer question
Thanks for all the help...
XVP seems quite high on requirements. Like it needs an SMTP server set
up. I''m not sure I like that.
I found a tool called BixData, it''s proprietary but with a free
license for a limited number of managed servers. Being a fully fledged
cloud management system, it''s true overkill for me and my 3-4 virtual
machines, but at least it seems quite

question on mounting a partition that is in a disk image
How do I mount a partition that is in an image file?
I have a file called centos.img that has 3 partitions in the file.
I need to copy data to the third partition on that image file.
I have seen things about a loop back device (which is fine)
but then it talked about an offset parameter and I dont know what
that is or more importantly what number to use. I hope I'm on the
right track.

img file to physical disk
Hi all.
I''ve got a domU that exists in a sparse file image, I''d like to now use
this on a physical partition (loopback performance issues).
Is there an a easy way to do this ?
Thanks
Stuart

System Requirements for Samba?
Hi Rob,
I'm not sure you will get much pleasure out of VirtualBox on that
hardware. It sits completely on top of the OS and it will grab most of
the resources, even hogging from the OS. And it will run very hot. The
Xen hypervisor (incl. XenServer, XCP-NG) is very resource efficient and
with Linux guests (PV or PVHVM), it will run very smoothly. The same
applies to KVM. My FX-6300 box

Using LVM snapshots to backup NTFS partitions for windows guests
Hi everyone!
I''ve been reading this list for a while and I''m thinking that the best
way to do backups is using LVM snapshots as discussed here several
times.
The problem is that when i use a LVM logical volume as windows disk,
windows writes the partition table onto the LV so the LV itself is not
a partition - it''s a whole disk.
lvm/device-mapper does not create the

Suggestions on building VM disks from scratch
This may not be the best forum to ask, but it does
seem to be one where it is as likely as anywhere
that someone will have dealt with a similar problem.
I need to define a procedure for last resort disaster

root partition (and any others that are critical.)

vhd to xen img file (not using xenserver)
Is there a way to convert a Virtual PC vhd file to a raw img file for Xen
without using XenServer ? I found a v2v utility from Starwind that converts
to an .img format, but I don''t know if it is the same as the format that Xen
uses. I ran the conversion and tried it under Xen, but could not get the
console to come up, and had to destroy the domu to get that domain to shut
down. I expect

Will 5.4 be an "Extended Life" release?
In the next month or two I've got to upgrade a number of servers that
are currently on an EOL'd version of 4-STABLE. I foresee that I'll
have very limited time to do full OS upgrades on these systems in the
coming several years, so I want to make sure I bring them onto an
extended-life branch.
Right now 4.11 has the furthest projected EOL date (Jan 31 2007), and

How to Backup and Restore MBR within Logical Volumes?
Hi All,
I have several Xen virtual machines within logical volumes using LVM2. I did
not use disk images for performance reasons.
Conventionally, if I want to clone my virtual machines, I have to dd the LV
to an image file. But this consumes a lot of time and harddisk space.
So, instead of doing that, I want to use losetup and kpartx with my logical
volumes, which contain operating systems of

fdisk hard drive image
Hello list,
Currently, i use a partition image to run my XenU (/dev/hda2) and "fdisk
-l" return nothing and can''t open /dev/hda .
I want to use a full hard drive image (not partition image) from my Xen0
as hda in my XenU. I want to be able to run fdisk on hda in my XenU to
list and regenerate partitions.
I tried with this (/img is my hard drive image):

home. One desktop is FC 3 and one is FC 4 and I have an old laptop

I am running LDAP and have 'included' redhat/autofs.schema in the setup
but have been too chicken to try to implement because I just have a bad
feeling about this...

newbie question re block-attach on ubuntu 11.10
I''m a complete newbie at Xen, just getting started.
I was happy to see that Ubuntu 11.10 includes Xen again,
http://zulcss.wordpress.com/2011/09/04/xen-4-1-1-on-ubuntu/
So I installed ubuntu 11.10''s precompiled Xen,
and started playing around with it.
I''m not even trying to start another VM at the moment,

Bug in mkfs.btrfs?!

I wanted to create a new btrfs fs for my backups.
When trying to mkfs.btrfs for that device, I''m getting
"error checking /dev/loop2 mount status"

lstat("/dev/disk/by-id/ata-INTEL_SSDSA2M160G2GC_CVPO939201JX160AGN-par",
0x7fffa30b3cf0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
The problem is there is something missing

Hmmm, that gives me a timeout when downloading. And another image I got
gives me an "argument list too long" -- which I had feared already...
It has a size of 3 MB and Linux "only" allows 2...
