Windows iconv() "failure" in certain locales
This is a continuation of the R-devel thread with subject
"suggestion to fix packageDescription() for Windows users" :
As I said there, a patch should rather address the underlying
problem in packageDescription rather than a kludgy workaround
patch for citation().
(For that same reason, Ben Marwick proposed to fix
packageDescription() rather than the symptom seen in citation().)

R CMD BATCH: set locale?
Hi
I would like to change the locale when using R CMD BATCH. Usually, if I
want to run it in english, for R in console/GUIs, I edit the .Rprofile
file, adding:
Sys.setlocale("LC_ALL","en_US.UTF8")
Sys.setlocale("LC_MESSAGES","en_US.UTF8")
But while this works for interactive R, it does not for R CMD BATCH. The
problem is that running tests for a package,

Percentiles in R
Hi there! Still struggling to translate Matlab code into R's tsDyn package.
Here is my question: Is there in R an equivalent function to Matlab's
prctile()? To the moment I thought it was quantile(), but I just
realized I was wrong. The definition of the Matlab function:
prctile
Percentiles of a sample
SyntaxY = prctile(X,p)

Y = prctile(X,p) calculates a value that is

R and Openmpi
Hello,
We have R working with Rmpi/openmpi, but I'm a little worried. Specifically, (a) the -np flag doesn't seem to override the hostfile (it works fine with fortran hello world) and (b) I appear to have twice as many processes running as I think I should.

Openmpi version 1.1

star models
Hi,
I am traying to implement an STAR model, but I have some problems.
I am following the instruction of the model, that they are in:
http://bm2.genes.nig.ac.jp/RGM2/R_current/library/tsDyn/man/star.html
that they are from:
http://bm2.genes.nig.ac.jp/RGM2/pkg.php?p=tsDyn
The model is:

VAR and VECM in multivariate time series
Hello to everyone!
I am working on my final year project about multivariate time series. There
are three variables in the multivariate time series model.
I have a few questions:
1. I used acf and pacf plot and find my variables are nonstationary. But in
adf.test() and pp.test(), the data are stationary. why?
2.I use VAR to get a model. y is the matrix of data set and I have made a

Neural Net forecasting
Are there any packages in R that are suitable for doing time series
forecasting using neural networks? I have looked in the nnet package and
neural package and they both seem geared towards classification.

Threshold vector error correction models
Hi,
is anyone aware of estimation functions for threshold vector error correction / threshold cointegration models?
I didn't find anything for R using RSeek or Google.
Thanks a lot for any pointers,

suggestion to fix packageDescription() for Windows users
I'd be curious to know what others think of Rich's patch. If it is acceptable, I can spend time that I was going to look at it this week on another bug.

Bug report - duplicate row names with as.data.frame()
Hello,
I'd like to report what I think is a bug: using as.data.frame() we can
create duplicate row names in a data frame. R version 3.4.3 (current stable
release).
Rather than paste code in an email, please see the example formatted code
here:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/49031523/duplicate-row-names-in-r-using-as-data-frame
I posted to StackOverflow, and consensus was that we should

Consistency of variable storage in R and Sys.setlocale (is this a feature or bug)?
<I was not sure if this should go to R-devel or R-help. If I e-mailed this
to the wrong place, please let me know.>
Hello dear R-devel members,
I came by an oddity, with regards to how character variables are being
transformed when they are in Hebrew, and when Sys.setlocale is changed.
Here is an example:
# first, let's set the locale to Hebrew
Sys.setlocale("LC_ALL",

LC_TIME not set correctly by Sys.setlocale() ?
Related to the following question on Stackoverflow:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44723690/unexpected-behavior-of-sys-setlocale#44723690
It appears as if Sys.setlocale() does not update LC_TIME correctly for use
in date formatting. Although R reports that LC_TIME is changed to the new
setting after use of Sys.setlocale(), as.Date() still uses the old
settings. The only way to update this is

R CMD BATCH --vanilla --slave produces unwanted lines
Hello list
(thanks for all the help on my data.frame() question, especially to
Professor R for a working script...I was pleased to see the solution
wasn't obvious!)
Anyway, now I'm trying to run R in batch mode, but I'm getting extra
output, which I don't want (RedHat 8.3, R-1.7.0):
r:~% cat test.R

write(rnorm(4),"")

WISH: Sys.setlocale() to return value invisibly
Contrary to, say, Sys.setenv(), Sys.setlocale() returns it's value
visibly. This means that if you for instance add:
Sys.setlocale("LC_COLLATE", "C")
to your .Rprofile file, it will print:
[1] "C"
at startup. The workaround is to wrap the call in invisible(), but I'd
argue that any "setter" function should return invisibly.

test fails when requesting LC_CTYPE
On RedHat Enterprise Linux 6, the test below fails (this is using the stock
GCC 4.4.7) from R-devel r72707. LC_CTYPE is unset when I run it, but
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
It also failed "yesterday" where as far as I recall the test code looked a
bit different.
