string interpolation - #{} vs. single vs. double quotes
Could someone point me to documentation that provides a succinct and accurate description of the difference between interpolation using #{}, single quotes, and double quotes ? I imagine there''s a set of precedence rules that govern behavior if/when they''re mixed. I''d like to get clear on this. Thanks, Bill -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was

respond_to not detecting JS turned on. form_to_remote problem?
I''m trying to use respond_to to redirect visitors who have JS turned off to a different page. The problem I''m having is that respond_to is sending *everybody* there. It''s not recognizing that JS is turned on in the browser. The wanted_html.rhtml file below is rendered whether I''ve got JS turned on or off. I''ve looked at the Accept headers being sent

AJAX Insertion.Before
Can anyone point me to an example of how to use the Insertion. Before technique? I''ve just begun trying to use AJAX and worked through Curt''s "Ajax on Rails". The description in AWD of what this does is just what I need, there''s no example of how to use it, and I''m getting no joy using Google. Any help is tremendously appreciated. -------------- next

validate_uniqueness_of {combination of fields} ???
I''ve looked at the validates documentation and it appears that validates_uniqueness_of works on only one field at a time. So I can, for example, validate that "sam" is unique to the record set, and that "smith" is unique to the record set. My problem is that each record includes two fields, the _combination_ of which must be unique to the record set, but each of

Ruby Reference
Hello all, What Ruby reference is everybodies favorite? When I''ve been looking around for documentation I haven''t found any that quite compares to php.net''s and cppreference.com''s function references. I''ve been using the one found on rubycentral, but I think that it is missing quite a bit and doesn''t have very good examples. ri is fine, but

params vs @params
Is there a difference in the way that params[] and @params[] are handled? Is the ''handling'' done by Ruby or Rails? A pointer to the relevant documentation would be sincerely appreciated. Or just an answer would be ok too ;-) Thanks, Bill -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

render partial from withit mail template
Hi, I''m trying to include a partial in an email template but it throws me this: undefined method `controller_path'' for SupportMailer:Class Extracted source (around line #12): 11: 12: <%= render :partial => ''footer'' %> I guess email views are a little different from normal ones as they don''t seem to have a access to a proper controller (?)

Testing IP Instances in 62 on vmware
The network fails for the zone when i try to setup it with ip-type exclusive. Its on a vmware server 1.0.2 using a emulated e1000g, this is the only current way i have got to test it with :( Any ideas on how to find out what the problem is? Is it that the emulation done by vmware can''t do this? I think it would be useful for this to work in vmware, as you can add many virtual nics to

Ready to call this a bug
I''ve been trying to get a handle on AJAX today and am ready to call "BUG!" I started with the code from Curt''s "AJAX on Rails". It used <ul="my_list"> and <li> and worked fine. Except I need a table instead of a list. So I did the simplest thing that I thought could possibly work. In the view, I changed the :position attribute from

Self-referencial habtm relationship
Heyo! I am setting up a self-referencial habtm relationship with the users of my app. I am using Chad Fowler''s "Rails Recipes" to get me started, and everything works great with the join table "people_friends". I add friends by doing somebody.friends << somebodyelse. However, with my app, there is an approval process so my join table has columns person_id,

Time to split the list?
I hope no one gets offended by my asking, but I wonder what others think about the possibility of splitting the list into two or three focal areas. Personally, I think I''d like to see three seperate lists: 1) newbie development (e.g., help working through tutorials, etc.) 2) more advanced development topics, 3) environment setup / admin.. What do you think? Best regards, Bill

Ruby/XSLT
Anybody got any experience using this ( http://greg.rubyfr.net/pub/packages/ruby-xslt/files/README.html ) ? I asked my hosting company (a2hosting.com) about XSLT processors for Rails and mentioned this one. Four hours later I get email that they''ve installed it. Thing is, the documentation didn''t generate, and when I execute ''gem list --local'' it''s

Upgraded to Ruby 1.9.1 and Mongrel now fails
We recently upgraded to ruby 1.9.1 (in order to get new functions in the Math module). We''ve reinstalled Mongrel with it, and even gone so far to make some modifications to the compile (based on a post I found on one of the forums). Mongrel now fails when we try to launch it: mongrel_rails cluster::start With the message: ERROR RUNNING ''cluster::start'': Plugin

Relationship Question (STI)
My girlfriend and I have been dating for two years, and she just told me she has an STI... Actually, I currently have three different models, like: Dog, Whale, Monkey They all have some similar attributes, but, they are unique enough to break into their own models. I could use STI, but I think the table would just have too many columns. Now, I wanted to let the Dog''s, Whale''s
