Winbindd+W2K+NT+Pam+Samba 2.2.3a+Solaris
Hi -
I have been attempting to set up Samba to do authentication against a
Windows 2K Domain Controller as well as NT PDCs. I have installed Winbindd,
Samba, and compiled with PAM and updated my smb.conf, pam.conf file and the
other stuff in the installation guide. The objective of all of this is to
allow an application running on top of Solaris to authenticate the users
logging into the

Command to get tape capacity status?
I have an Overland tape library connected, via SCSI card, to an
out-of-box, full install of C5 install on an old PC.
I have a script that uses tar to archive data to tape and mtx to change
tapes. What I don't know, if possible, is to obtain the status of how
much tape is left in the drive. If I get a write failure, I'd like to
know if the tape is bad or has run out of space.
I

Backing up remote system
I have an Overland Arcvault tape library, a CentOS 5 box, a Windows XP
system, and RAID box that supports NFS and CIFS.
The RAID box is remotely located and acts as central file storage.
I might normally use dump to perform backups, but as was learned here, and
on dump's man page, dump doesn't support remote file systems such as NFS
or CIFS.
So, for now, I've connected the

Help with dump/restore
So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server
to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5
install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package
updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for
backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just
gotta live with it.
Since I know EL5 and

Help troubleshooting silent failure reading huge file with read.delim
I am trying to read a tab-delimited 1.25 GB file of 4,115,119 records each
with 52 fields.
I am using R 2.11.0 on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine with 8 GB memory.
I have tried the two following statements with the same results:
d <- read.delim(filename, as.is=TRUE)
d <- read.delim(filename, as.is=TRUE, nrows=4200000)
I have tried starting R with this parameter but that changed

Help with full and incremental dumps
I have an Overland Arcvault 12 library with a full LTO3 magazine of 400/800 GB
tapes. It is connected directly to the fileserver via a SCSI card/cable.
The two main directories I want to back up are /var/log, which is on one
filesystem, and /home, which is on another.
There are _currently_ no databases to worry about, but there may be active
users logged in and active jobs running.

Searching R Packages
Hi Spencer,
Thank you for this wonderful service to the R community.
A suggestion: it would be great to discuss how to search github and Bioconductor repositories.
Thanks,
Ravi

Searching R Packages
Dear Spencer,
Nice initiative!
I discover a lot of packages not by explicit search, but by running into
them. I find cranberries really helpful there, especially the twitter feed
(@CRANberries) and also r-bloggers, especially through Joseph Rickert's
monthly roundup of new packages. And then of course there is the R journal
and JSS, but those speak for themselves.
So maybe a 'keeping up

Problems with LTO-3 and U320 on Centos 4.4
I am currently testing an Overland Tape storage unit with a LTO-3 drive
on CentOS 4.4. After a random amount of time but usually when we have
backed up about 0.5-1TB we get scsi errors which cause the backup to
fail. I have rebuilt the box with Solaris 10 x86 and Windoze to prove
the hardware and have successfully backed up over 3TB on each OS without
error.
Can anyone offer advice on how to find

Duncan's retirement: who's taking over Rtools?
????? I concur with Moshe.? David and his team have done great thing
for R, but a lion will not become a vegetarian.? I think that any
reasonable reading of Microsoft's history will supports that
perspective.? However, this is a fairly well documented phenomenon far
beyond Microsoft.? Jean Tirole won the 2014 Nobel Memorial Prize in
Economics for establishing that, especially regarding

Cross Loop
Hi, I'm fairly new to Linux and I have a question. I downloaded Wine primarily so I could still use Cross Loop (http://www.crossloop.com/) It's a remote access program that's really easy to use, so it doesn't confuse my relatives who live to far a way for me to actually go to them and help. I'm not exactly the best with computers, but I usually know enough to keep my system
