oddness when adding to index -
I was having some odd results when working with acts_as_ferret (current
trunk), so I decided to test with the current version of ferret to see
if I encountered the same problem. I did. Here are the details:
installed ferret 0.10.10 on debian sarge with ''sudo gem install ferret''
(btw, same results on OSX)
opened up an irb session:

stop words and /''s
Hi new version of ferret and acts as ferret have sorted out the scary
glibc *** linked list pointer errors, thank god! New version are good
but some searches are still not working. It is mostly the stop words
ones. For example the "For Sale/Free/Swap" fails but works when "for" is
stripped out. I have read all the recent posts regarding this issue and
failed to get it to

Numeric Range or comparision doesn''t work
Hi,
it looks like Ferret still compares numeric fields by lexical ordering,
not numerical ordering. I am using Ferret 0.11.4(I tried in both linux
and windows, the results are the same).
index = Ferret::Index::Index.new()
docs = [
{:num => 1, :data => "yes"},
{:num => 1, :data => "no"},
{:num => 10, :data => "yes"},

svn problems
I can consistently segfault the 0.10.4 gem, so I''m trying to get the
subversion version working with hopes towards tracking the problem down.
I have a fresh SVN checkout but:
a) the version (in ferret.rb) claims to be 0.9.6; and
b) Ferret::Index::FieldInfos and a couple other classes are missing at
run time. It looks like this is because they''re not exported in the C

Parallel indexing doesn''t work?
Hi,
I''m trying to get parallelized ferret indexing working for my AAF
indices, based on the example in the O''Reilly Ferret shortcut.
However, the resulting indices after merging seem to have no actual
documents.
I went and made minimal changes to the example in the Ferret shortcut
pdf, and indeed can''t get that to work either. I''d appreciate any help

hello, acts_as_ferret questions, any help greatly appreciate
hi, ive been reading up on ferret, acts_as_ferret, and other search
plugins for rails.
after reading about ferret, i found out about the acts_as_ferrt plugin.
my first question about acts_as_ferret:
1. from reading about ferret, do i still need to manually save the IDX
and add a IDX column field to my model table for acts_as_ferret to work?
they say that acts_as_ferret handles everything,

Exact phrase score
Sorry if this has been beaten to death here but I couldn''t find the
exact answer I was looking for.
In the app I''m writing, we convert the score to a percentage and display
it with the search results. The problem is when you search for an exact
phrase (for example) and it matches the title of a document exactly, you
only get a 17% match.
Has anyone seen a way to either curve

Which analyzer to use
Lucene''s standard analyzer splits words separater with underscores.
Ferret doesn''t do this. For example, if I create an index with only
document ''test_case'' and search for ''case'' it doesn''t find anything.
Lucene on the other hand finds it. The same story goes for words
separated by colons.
Which analyzer should I use to emulate

Ferret 0.9.0-alpha (port of Apache Lucene to pure ruby)
Hi Folks,
I''ve just released version 0.9.0. This latest version of Ferret is an
alpha release. I have removed the old c extension and Ferret is now
running on a fully ported C library. This has allowed some huge
performance improvements both with regard to memory and CPU usage.
There will probably be a few portability issues to start with. It has
been developed on Linux so it should

Hyphens
Hi there,
I''m working with some legacy data where customer phone numbers are
stored with hyphens between the area code, exchange, and number (e.g.
555-555-5555). Is this the best way to store a phone number? Perhaps
not, but it''s the way they were being stored, so I have to work with
this format.
Right, so when I save a record the log tells me acts_as_ferret indexed

Should "a" match "ä" in ferret?
Hi all,
I have indexed a huge amount of data with text from several european
languages. In the index are values like Georg Friedrich H?ndel.
I would like a search phrase like "Georg Friedrich Handel" to find
records with the real spelling of H?ndel but it doesn''t seem to work.
Can anyone give me an idea of what I need to do to make this happen. A

aligning Ferret''s IndexSearcher.search API with Lucene''s
Recently I''ve been revisiting some of my search code. With a greater
understanding of how Java Lucene implements its search methods, I
realized that one level of abstraction is not present in the Ferret
classes/methods. Here are the relevant method signatures:
Ferret''s search methods:
in Ferret::Index::Index:
search(query, options = {}) -> returns a TopDocs

Any chance to get 0.11.3 on windows soon ?
Hi,
I''m working on a Ferret-based application which indexes content in all
European languages. Thus, I have to deal with those funny European
characters.
After googling a bit, I decided to move on with a custom European
analyzer based on MappingFilter, as suggested in the Ferret rdoc.
Everything works fine with Ferret 0.11.3 on Mac OS X.
But this application needs to run on both

best updating method
Hi All,
I have a Ferret index containing some cached RSS feeds.
I have a nightly cron script to cache the feeds, and I''d like to update
the index with the latest feeds.
I see the Index class has an update method, but I can''t work out how to
get the id of the relevant document to pass in.
Lets say I have a file called "google_news.xml"

How to get the count of matching documents
I''m trying to generate a rails pagination helper for some ferret

my search query. I don''t see an obvious way of finding this. Any
help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

0.10.2 release with win32 gem
Hey all,
I''ve just released Ferret version 0.10.2. It is mostly just a bug fix
release. The only change is that a highlight method has been added to
Ferret::Index::Index. Please try it out and let me know what you
think.
The big news for this release is that there is also a binary win32 gem
included. This is the first time I''ve build a gem like this so please
let me know if
