Dreamhost subscription?
I''m thinking about signing up with DreamHost for the base Level 1 $9.95
plan. Does anyone think that''s a bad idea?
I''d like to know others thoughts, and who they recommend for RoR
hosting?
Thanks!

Declaring ActiveRecord observers
Hello
I''m using the ''act_as_authenticated'' plugin to implement a small and
simple authentication system in my app. Everything is working just
fine and the world is a better place to live in. The plugin creates a
ActiveRecord observer in order to send the newly registered user a
confirmation e-mail.
Per the API docs [1], one should declare the observer in the

Getting Ruckus to Work (And Internet for that matter)
Hi, I tried installing Ruckus on my Ubuntu (newest version). For those of you not familiar with ruckus, it is like an iTunes thing for College Students which allows us to download music legally. Anyways, once installed, I tried to sign in on it and it said the following:
Cannot connect to the Ruckus server:
Error: A security error occurred (12175).
Please check your firewall settings to verify

Ruckus on Linux
Hello Wine Users!
There's a dead thread (well, dead as far as ideas) on getting Ruckus
to run under WINE over at ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438396. Basically, it
doesn't seem that anyone that's looked at the thread knows how to get
the dll's Ruckus needs into WINE. I'm happy to test as I have a
Ruckus account. I think anyone with a *.edu can sign

Problem with scaffolding and table name
Hello, i''m new in ruby rails framework. I have the following problem. I
try to create a scaffold
for a certain model of my db, but since ruby rails doesn''t assume the
table name corectly (its incidents_reported )
i get errors ....
Besides renaming the table :) is there a way to ''tell'' ruby rails the
name of the table?
I haven''t been able to find any

Announcing: jEdit Snippets for Ruby on Rails
-----------------------------------------------------
I thought I''d "give a little back to the community" and whip up some
SuperAbbrev files for ruby and rhtml that mimic all of the Textmate
Rails bundle snippets.
Note: This was totally inspired by Textmate and the syncPEOPLE

MergeJS - Easily merge, compress, cache, and version your javascript!
After reading Cal Henderson''s article on Vitamin Serving Javascript
Fast<http://synthesis.sbecker.net/articles/2006/06/03/www.thinkvitamin.com/features/webapps/serving-javascript-fast>I
was immediately inspired to create a plugin to easily facilitate this
in
Ruby on Rails. I whipped up most of it right then, and finally got around to
polishing it for release today.
Told myself I

x-table package
Dear Sirs,
I would like to propose a (I believe) simple but useful enhancement to the xtable package.
The latest version of the xtable package doesn't accept "H" as a
possible table.placement argument. Indeed, the "H" placement would be
very useful if one wanted to use the float latex package. I guess that
many users would be very happy of having this further

Global Data, where can it go?
I''m developing a stateful Ruby application that needs to keep data in
one location where all people accessing the site can modify its
contents. This data will be read-from/written to often, so I would
prefer for rails to keep it in memory, rather than a database.
My frist try involved global variables. After discovering that they
were being "re-initialized" with each new

Newbie question - Automatically update _form.rhtml?
Hi all, I''ve got an odd issue. I''m new to Ruby/Rails and have a bit of a
silly question. I''m following along with the nice little tutorial here,
to get an idea of the system:
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html?page=3
However, I''m running into an issue where the author adds a new field in
his database, refreshes the browser and shows

Acts_as_authenticated plugin?
Hi,
I''ve just downloaded the acts_as_authenticated plugin but I can''t find much
in the way of documentation.
First is there anywhere that someone could point me to to get a handle on
this.
Second.. Does the plugin still require the use of generators to use?
Thanx in advance
Dan

gluster WITHOUT nfs
Hi together,
is it possible to use gluster WITHOUT nfs? First I thought it is possible by using "gluster native client/protocol". I do not want any open ports on public interfaces and as far as I understand it is not possible to bind nfs to internal interfaces. I am trying to pin every daemon (glusterd, glusterfsd, glusterfs) to internal interfaces (security). Hopefully this can be done

[ANN/ADV] Ruby for Rails now published in paper!
Hi --
I''m on the road, so I haven''t laid eyes on it yet -- but word on the
virtual street is that "Ruby for Rails: Ruby techniques for Rails
developers" is now out in paper.
It will probably take a little longer to trickle to your neighborhood
Barnes and Noble... but you can order it now from the publisher. See
http://www.manning.com/black. And trickle it will, too.

Bug in R0.90.0? (PR#374)
Dear Sirs,
Try the following simple r-program
a<-data.frame(1:10)
b<-matrix(NA,3,1)
z<-rbind(b,as.matrix(a))
While it works well i R0.64.1, it appears to be deleterious for R0.90.0.
When I run it, R crashes. I'm using Windows NT on a Pentium II system.
Please let me know if you need some other details.
Best regards

accessing uploaded file on filesystem question.
Hi,
I''m able to upload files onto my webserver filesystem but I had a question
regarding how I''d go about accessing them using the <img src="..." > tag.
If my files, i.e pictures, are being uploaded to
public/images/<dir>/filename.jpg, then should I store the entire path, or
just the picture name in my database table? I would imagine storing just

FC4/Rails/Ruby/Apache/FastCGI wiki anyone?
I have followed a number of fast cgi tutorials to get it installed on FC 4
with ruby but not sure where I went wrong. Which is the best
FC4/Rails/Ruby/Apache/FastCGI wiki out there?
I worry that because I have tried a few now that a simple "monkey at the
keyboard" approach of going through the install may not be enough to save
myself from really diving in and understanding it all :)

Trouble redefining ActiveRecord default error messages
Hello,
I''m redefining ActiveRecord::Errors.default_error_messages in order
to translate ActiveRecord''s validation messages. I''m putting the
redefinition in config/environment.rb.
The trouble is that I''ve found that this approach works as long as I''m
running in development mode under WEBrick, but not on my ISP under
production mode. I guess the

A Stylesheet for a database app
Hi to all, I''m a new subscriber of this list and a new user of RoR.
I''m looking for a stylesheet to make a simple database app nicer, a css to
start working with.
I have to do some simple apps and I want them to be the more uniform on the
presentation side.
I know I can do it for myself, but a nice stylesheet is not so easy to perform
for a non-grafic geek like me, and so

pdf on the fly
In my rails app I need to create pdf reports on the fly. I have
installed railspdf, wich is working fine. But, how can I create tables
and paragraphs and stuff? Can I mimic an .rhtml file (using <% for
...%> etc? Or is it wise to use Ruby::PDF directly? Is there anyone out
there with experience in this, and who is willing to share his findings?
Thx
