Defining model classes for enumerations
I have several tables for enumerations. They all have the same content: id, name, position. I''d like to avoid the tedious work of defining a class for each one explicitly. Not least, in order to avoid clutter in the model directory. Here''s what I''ve come up with: class EnumRecord < ActiveRecord::Base def self.define_enums(*enums) enums.each do |spec|

Wine/Interix -- The pros and cons.
I was thinking about running Wine on Interix (the POSIX layer of Microsoft's Services for Unix). There are a few apparent unknows: Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Since Interix uses PE for it's native format (running on Windows, duh), Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Would it reject them being in PE format and having the 'POSIX Layer' attribute set, or could we hack on a

Through method problems with custom foreign_keys
A person has a many company_branches and A company_branch has many people. This join is represented using a "contacts" table. I am using a legacy schema so i am forced into using non-standard rails primary keys. I am using the new through relationship in rails 1.1. p=Person.find(1) b=p.company_branches # gives this error: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: OCIError: ORA-00904:

Is eval the only way?
Hi, I''m trying to write some methods which use a parameter to represent a Class name. A very simplistic example: def foo(class_name, conditions) x = class_name.find(:all, :conditions => "#{conditions}") end Unfortunately, this does not work. The only way around this problem that I can think of is to use eval: def foo(class_name, conditions) x = eval

fixed and random effects in lme
Hi All, I would like to ask a question on fixed and random effecti in lme. I am fiddlying around Mick Crawley dataset "rats" : http://www.bio.ic.ac.uk/research/mjcraw/statcomp/data/ The advantage is that most work is already done in Crawley's book (page 361 onwards) so I can check what I am doing. I am tryg to reproduce the nested analysis on page 368:

has_and_belongs_to_many problem
I''m having a problem with a has_and_belongs_to_many (habtm) association between two models with extra attributes. I''m writing a comic book database, and each issue has many creators on it. Thing is, some creators perform multiple duties. They may write one issue, draw another, etc. However, if I add a creator twice to an issue and try to delete it, it removes both creators:

Self-referential many-many joins with :through
I thought I had this nailed but.. now I''m seeing spots.. I''ve included my models below, feel free to ignore them. I''m really just after an example that works. I couldnt find one on the wiki... which is fair enough considering Ricks patch: http://dev.rubyonrails.org/changeset/4022 that fixed them only went through 5 days ago.. Cheers -henster

Keeping DRY - I like a simple life!
Hi, I''m new to Ruby and Rails and I would be very grateful for some advice. I''ve got the following code. class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base include Versionable # Some methods to handle my versioned objects has_many :versions, :class_name => "FooVersion", :foreign_key => "parent_id" belongs_to :curr, :class_name => "FooVersion",

ActiveRecord in modules & associations
I''d like to organise my active records into modules but can''t get the associations to work. The doc says that associations within the same module should work. I''ve tried using the class_name option too but still doesn''t work. Can anyone help? For example module Mod1 class Animal < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :dogs, :class_name =>

modifying scaffold method
I''ve made the following changes to scaffolding.rb. Is it possible to put those changes into some type of a plugin or helper or something, instead of directly modifying the Rails source? (and, btw, I think pagination should be removed from scaffolding. And deletes should only happen on post requests. That''s essentially what I''ve changed). Thanks, Joe Index:
