ruby mathematical expression parser
Hi,
Has anyone come across a Ruby mathematical expression parser, capable
of parsing out token, replacing them with values then executing the
mathematical formula? Nothing too heavy, A * (44/12) * ... etc. where
A is can be replaced with a value.
In Java there are serveral, like JEP, but I''d prefer it we could get a
Ruby one now we have moved over to Rails, otherwise we will have to

Textmate Madness
Has anyone come across this problem... I created some Ruby files in Textmate
on my Mac - and everything works fine. However, when I run those files on a
Windows machine I get e.g.

unit testing with model inheritence
Having jotted down some models, with some inheritence I tried to run some
unit tests. After waiting for rake test_units to run I got a rake of errors
(if you''ll forgive the play on words). The errors were to do with unknown
tables in the tear down stage. The unknown tables corresponded to sub-types
where single table inheritence was used. In other words, these tables

Is Ruby stable for production use?
Hi,
I realise that Windows is a poor platform and that Webrick is a development,
not production, server. However, we have started seeing this crop up when
perfectly simple page to page links are invoked...

Mixins?
As is often the case when I tackle a new platform/language, I get the big
picture very quickly (because frameworks are frameworks are frameworks) but
its the nitty-gritty of the language that bogs me down...
So I have some similar methods on a few of my model classes that I wanted to
push into a helper. Now I reckoned that the Ruby way was to create a module
and mix it in with include. However, I

dom id on form_remote_tag
I want to make use of a form_remote_tag to submit a form
asynchronously. Easy done. However, we also want to add an
observe_form tag to check for some value changes while the form is
being entered.
The observe_form tag needs a dom id to work on but I can''t see how to
enter an html option for the dom id of the form on the
form_remote_tag.
Any ideas?
Here is the form tag so far...

Charts and Java servers
Hi,
As a long time Java/J2EE exponent I wanted to give Rails a fair crack of the
whip and after we evaluated it for several weeks I have to say I like it.
The installation process for the base system/framework is straightforward on
the two platforms we''ve tried (Windows and Mac OS X). However, the charting
components available, relying on ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick seem less
clear

Moving plural detection and --force-plural option to models generator
Hi all,
I talked to Aaron briefly about this at RailsConf, but I just wanted to
bring this up here before I start working on it in case anyone objects.
I will be looking into moving the "Plural version of the model detected,
using singularized version. Override with --force-plural." warning and the
associated flag into the model generators. Currently this is only in the
resource (and

Plural version of the model detected, using singularized version. Override with --force-plural.
what is the proper way to make this work? --force-plural doesn''t seem
to change the results. this only seems to happen when you choose
words that the plural and singular is the same word.

Scaffold a Plural table w/ No Pluralization in environment
Hi guys,
I have a situation here. I have my project set to no pluralization due
to legacy tables in environment.rb. Now, I have some new tables which
I''m starting to pluralize. When I do a generate a scaffold to this new
table:
script/generate scaffold my_tables table
it seems to work out fine for certain sections like
http://mysite.com/railsapp/new (which also inserts properly to

Threads vs. Processes and Rails
Hey all,
I need to launce a rather lengthy process from a small Rails application.
It''s the sort of thing (sending out an email newsletter) that would need to
be launched from a browser window, but the browser doesn''t need to stick
around to see it through.
I played around with Thread.new, but I think, based on limited testing, that
the threads need to complete before the view

plural names such as countries
Hi,
I found out that Rad Rails names could be properly made plural, such as "country" = "countries" not "countrys".
.
I have a database that contained one table named "countrys". I pluralized the name by adding an "s" as "countrys".I ran the Rad Rails generator and created a "controller" that was named "country

meta is not a plural of metum
although data is a plural of datum
but Rails is insisting that it is... as usage of "meta" to refer to
ancilliary information is fairly common, I''m sure others are going to
run into it

Edit method problem with a plural-named model
Hi, I recently made a model called ''news''. I realize that it''s plural
and was gonna cause some problems, but I got the routing all down fine
with:
map.resources :news, :singular => :news_article
everything works fine except the EDIT method. it gives me this error:
You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it!

Winbindd dies instantly
Hi,
I'm trying to set up a Samba 4.1.16 file server for our (Samba 4)
domain. But for some reason I can't seem to be able to get it to work.
Even worse, I have run out of ideas on how to debug this. I've been
tampering with this for quite some time now, but I've come to realize I
can't figure this out on my own.
Can someone give me some pointers on where to look in order

formatting large volume
I just got a new server with a Dell MD-1000 SAS unit and 6-750 gigabyte
drives which are now initializing in RAID 10 which will give me just
about 2 terabytes.
I vaguely recall reading that fdisk wasn't suitable for partitioning and
wonder if I shouldn't be using partd instead. I am also wondering if I
should use lvm or just mkfs to create the filesystem. Anyone have
suggestions before I

Semi-OT: Backing up maildir
We switched our mail server over from mbox to maildir a few months ago and
couldn't be happier - the performance under normal load is incredible.
However we now have a problem with backup.. Typically we would run tar on
the mail server, sending its output to another server via ssh.. Like this:
tar cfp - /home | gzip | ssh other.server (cd /backups && tar xfp -).. I
have tried

Modems: Cable or DSL digital blunders that lartc may help with.
I have a Cable ''modem'' that has a problem that many of these devices is
bound to have. I was wondering what other lartc user thought about this
and if DSL has simular problems.
Cable, being Asymetrical, is able to upload at a given rate and hopefully
has a buffer, in the modem, of some kind. When I nc(netcat) to a UDP
echo, or discard, server I get about 10Mbps out on my

R_LIBS difficulty ?
Hi, R people.
I'm shy reporting this, as a bug in this area sounds very unlikely. Did
I make my tests wrongly? I'm still flaky at all this. Let me dare
nevertheless, who knows, just in case... Please don't kill me! :-)
Not so long ago, I wrote to this list:

lmer, p-values and all that
Dear Help:
I am trying to follow Professor Bates' recommendation, quoted by Professor Crawley in The R Book, p629, to determine whether I should model data using the 'plain old' lm function or the mixed model function lmer by using the syntax anova(lmModel, lmerModel). Apparently I've not understood the recommendation or the proper likelihood ratio test in question (or both) for I
