ActiveRecord and Lost Connection
This isnt totally a rails question; I am using ActiveRecord for storing
some simple values into a database. My problem; I keep gettign MySQL
Errors. On the Win32 machine it was off and on. Now on the linux
machine (ubuntu) I can'' t connect at all. I have all the password
settings correct.
My only thought, I am working with Threads and thought that might cause
the issue, but I

Init lifecycle and rails
In a servlet J2EE application, there is an init style method that gets
called after that servlet is loaded. Is there something similar within
a rails controller context. I am looking for something where I can load
and setup a particular object.
Also, what about with sessions as well. I would like to call some
library when a user session begins and possibly kill that object when

dispatch.fcgi hanging after lighttpd shutdown
Hi.
I''m using RoR 1.0 with FastCGI and lighttpd on a Debian 3.1 box. I
have configured lighttpd to do adaptive spawning of the FastCGI
processes.
However, after shutting down lighttpd the FastCGI processes remain
running.
Did this problem occur to anyone of you? Is there a fix?
I''d be really grateful for every answer.

Simple Ruby/Rails question, doing posted hours ago
I am not the Ruby aficionado yet, if I have created_on ...timestamp.
What is a ruby way of getting the hours/minutes/seconds ago. is there
some class that has this implemented.
For example:

Rails and Lighttpd, hangs?
I know this is kind of a generic question. But, when hitting my
lighttpd/rails site on some of the first hits, the site hangs. I
think it has something with the lighttpd configuration, possibly
something I am missing with rails or ruby? Any ideas or how to track
this down.

Motiro 0.4.2 released
Motiro is a tool for tracking software projects. It has borrowed its
name from an ancient tupy word meaning a work gathering. Motiro is a
time when people get together to collaborate on a common goal such as
harvesting food or building houses.
I have been working on this little thing for some time now on my spare
time. Version 0.4.2 is the seventh release, it features a Subversion
front end, an

Business Logic and where to place with rails
I am having an issue of deciding where I should put the business code
for example the more complex code coming off the controller. Right now,
I am just thinking to put it in the ''lib'' directory and the do something
along these lines:
require_dependency "system_process"
class SystemMessageController < ApplicationController

Q: Where to put a periodic updater?
Hello,
I need to put a script in place for updating a local database with a
remote resource periodically. It should be started alongside the
server (or inside it, whatever) and be run as long as the server
running my rails app is up an running.
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
I have thought of editing the environment.rb file and placing the call
to the script trigger there, but I wonder

How to use Rails and REST
Hi,
I just wrote an article on how to easily create a REST API for
Ruby on Rails applications:
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2006/04/19/rest-on-rails.html
It describes how to create everything from the ground up and includes
information on testing your API too.

Rails 1.1 and Ruby 1.8.3
I''ve seen that Rails 1.1 is not reliable with Ruby 1.8.2 so you should
upgrade to 1.8.4
I''m running ruby 1.8.3. What''s the story with it? Do I need to
upgrade before I try Rails 1.1?
Thanks

How to install RailsCron?
Hi,
I would like to start running a background procedure once a user logs in
to his account on the website. For this I am considering using the
RailsCron object. However, I am not able to download it. I am new to
Rails. Can someone give me the excat command I should use to get
RailsCron?
Can someone suggest a better way of running a procedure in the
background?
Thanks

Rails and Offline processing
How are you guys handling threads or server processes that have to,
for example, process the data in your application on a periodic basis?
Cron jobs can do it and then run on the database. But, are there ways
to launch threads within the rails application itself.
I have heard of WebBrick ways, but I am working with lighttpd,
fastcgi? (textdrive if you are really interested).

Tests not tiding up after themselves?
Hello,
My tests are messing with one another because it seems that they
aren''t cleaning the database after execution. I have the tables
headlines and articles. And the articles table has a foreign key to
the headlines table. My schema structure is created by this script
----
drop table if exists changes;
drop table if exists articles;
drop table if exists headlines;

RailsCron 0.2 questions
Hi all, I''ve set up RailsCron to send email reminders on a daily
basis. My dev environment is Rails trunk on Debian Sarge, lighttpd
running as a regular user.
I''m having two issues:
1) When I run "rake cron_start", I get
rake aborted!
undefined method `blank?'' for "":String
The "blank?" method is provided by Rails, so I''m

RailsCron 0.1 plugin
I, like many of you, have been searching for a good way to handle
running long processes in Rails. So I rolled my own solution. I
really want feedback! (I''ve tested this on very simple hello world
examples, so don''t use it on anything production yet) .
Grab the plugin:

RailsCron 0.2 plugin
I received feedback from some of you, saying that it would be cool if
RailsCron was even easier to manage. So I implemented a graceful
start/restart inside of the plugin''s init.rb. If you don''t like it,
comment it out and send me the feedback.
Also, I finished an update to RailsCron that allows you to attach
asynchronous processing methods to your ActiveRecord models. i.e.:

making backgroundrb cron
Hello,
i need to have some jobs scheduled in the background and executed at
specific times. I wanted to make a worker who does that - and it works a
little bit - but i had an enlightment... why not make bgdrb itself play that
role? i mean, the MiddleMan has already everything needed! a timer thread,
currently used only for deleting old workers and the workers itself. since

RailsCron 0.2.2, please update
I updated RailsCron to fix some threading issues with ActiveRecord.
Please update if you were on 0.2.1. Also, I am still working on a
good unit test strategy (its tricky because I would think that the
tests must occur over a lot of time), but haven''t had/made time to
give it its due. If you have suggestions, please let me know.

Best way to do task in background in Rails
Hey everyone,
I''m still getting up to speed with Rails and Ruby. Is there a best
practice technique for kicking off a thread to work on an activity in
the background?
Here''s the scenario: the user performs an action that triggers e-mails
to be sent. (I''m using ActionMailer). My app acknowledges with a message
to the user that the messages have been sent. I would

Sending Scheduled Email Ticklers
Hi All,
I am developing a RoR app for managing community information and would
like to have an summary of current events and interests mailed out
monthly. The tickler email would be a basic summary of items and links
back to the site.
I would like to schedule the email delivery dates and have the app send
out email to registered users that opted for this service. Once
scheduled, a monthly
