login forms , redirect_to and ajax-scaffold problems
Hi,
I have a standard type authentication technique direct from AWDWR, so there is a
before_filter :authorize_employee, :except => :login in my employees_controller.rb
the authorize_employee is in application.rb
def authorize_employee
unless session[:employee_id]

request.xhr? is false after redirecting an AJAX request?
Dear everybody
I''m trying to develop a web application that makes use of AJAX, but also works
if a user has no (or doesn''t want to use) JS. For normal requests, this is
pretty easy. Almost every action ends with
render blahblah, :layout => !request.xhr?
This way, I can use the same action to render a full page (with layout) as
well as rendering an AJAX request (only the

Gracefully degrading Ajax AND Drying up actions
Still a semi-newbie, but so far I''ve managed to solve most things with a
bit of help from the Agile book, some googling around, and a bit of
trial-and-error, but I''m really stuck with this one (very much an Ajax
newbie):
I know how to gracefully degrade an AJAX newpost type call so it can
appear inline or (for those without JS support) go to a new page (put an

link_to_remote and browser compatibility
link_to_remote generates the javascript: new Ajax.Updater(...). Have I
missed something or doesn''t this handle browsers with javascript support
but without XHR support?
What I''d like to do is:
1. If the browser supports XHR, use XHR
2. If the browser supports javascript (and perhaps even if the XHR
request fails) do a POST via javascript
3. If the browser doesn''t

where do uncaught exceptions printouts go?
Hi,
I have a worker, which should have thrown an uncaught exception and dumped the stack in the do_work
method, however I saw no dump or indication of any error in any of the logs.
This makes it very hard to debug, where does stdout and or stderr go? How canb I know if it gets
some kind of error? (in this case not being able to find a class).
Thanks

Prevent users from entering urls
How could I make it so that links on my page could link to a controllers
action, but if the user manually entered the url, it would redirect them
back to the main page? Is this possible?
Thank you,

Capistrano with Local (not file:///) repository
I''m developing an rails app. The SVN repository resides on a (Win 2k)
server on my company''s local intranet. The repository is accessed via
http (Apache + mod_dav_svn). From this machine, it is not a problem to
get out onto the Internet. However, coming in from the Internet is not
possible (at least, not without a VPN connection).
Given this, is it possible to use

I try to get AJAX running on a mobile Windows Mobile 5.0 based device

Have any of you experience with the rails javascripts on a this platform
or are there any hints, documentation on the net?

Redirect\Cookie bug with MSIE 5.5sp2
Hello all,
There seems to be a bug in internet explorer 5 where a redirect
causes the session to be lost.
A controller says....
def login
case @request.method
when :post
if @session[:user] = User.authenticate(@params
[:user_login], @params[:user_password])
return redirect_to(:action=>''send_confirmation'') unless

using dynamic element ids with visual_effect
Mike and I demo an Ajaxified version of the Depot application in the
Rails Studio. Part of the demo is a cart in the sidebar which updates
when you add a product to it. As well as updating the div, it also
highlights the most recently added link item. Right now, we do it with:
<script language="JavaScript">

access to lib?
Do I need to do anything special to access classes in RAILS_ROOT/lib from a worker?
Maybe:
require File.dirname(__FILE__) + ''../my_lib.rb''
or does it do that automatically like a controller does?
Also if I write a unit test for a worker that is accessing AR, is there anything special needed to
be done to access fixtures etc to test it?
Thanks

absolute urls in url_for vs. link_to
In both url_for and link_to, the :only_path param can be used to
determine whether the link url used is complete with hostname and path,
or just has the path (a kind of relative url).
However, in url_for it defaults to false (urls with hostnames), and in
link_to it defaults to true ( urls without hostnames, just paths).
Is there any reason for this discrepency? To me, it violates the
principle

output link_remote_to in helper
Hi all,
I have a complex link_remote_to link I need to generate often. I want
to DRY up my view and create a helper that generates this
link_remote_to for me.
Is there a way my helper can output the link_remote_to javascript?
Thanks

Deploying from local machine to remote host using capistrano?
Hi,
I would like to deploy a RoR application from my local machine to a remote
host.
Looks like the capistrano assumes that you are using an internet accessible
host for the SVN repository and doesn''t checkout files using file:///!
Did I miss some configuration?
How do other people handle their application deployment from your local
machine?
Thanks for your feedback.
