acts_as_authenticated current_user in a model?
What do I need to do to be able to use an acts_as_authenticated
current_user in a model?
Is there some sort of include or require I can do some where that would
allow this?

override created_on column name
We are using Rails for a project that must integrate with a legacy
database. Is there a way to get Rails to automatically set the timestamp
for a column named something other created_on or updated_on ?
Also, how does one manipulate the size of the database connection pool?

Created_on and updated_on in a non-ActiveRecord model
Hi you all,
I have a model simulating an ActiveRecord model, according to the tips
stated in [1]. It is simulated because even though I am gonna save the
attributes in a file, not in a DB, I still want the validations made by
ActiveRecord::Base (see code below).
Well, the thing is that I also want the behaviour of the created_on and
updated_on columns, that get modified automatically before

best way to add "created_by" entries to all tables???
Hi,
I want to automate somewhat the addition of created_by/updated_by fields
on my models (i.e. to include username). What''s the best/recommended
way to do this? Would it be to:
a) Find out how to extend the ActiveRecord::Base itself (I haven''t
extended a class before yet)
b) Use a plugin type approach where you have to add a tag manually to
each model file which then

Different validation for different users
Hi,
I have two types of users; normal user and admin.
I have a field called priority in the table task.
This priority field is invisible to the normal user, but not to the
admin. The admin has to fill in the priority field when he adds a record
via filling a form. Thus, i need to add validates_presence_of :priority
to the model task. But, if i do this, then the normal user can''t add a

Adding created_by and updated_by trouble
Hi everyone. This is a real noob question that I''m hoping someone out there
can help me with.
I have followed the tutorial How to Ad created_by and
updated_b<http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/Howto%20Add%20created_by%20and%20updated_by>y
and it works ok for retrieving the data. I''m using the Login_Generator.
I cannot get it to work on create or update. I think

why doesn't this work (setting attribute in "before_create")
Hi,
Can anyone spot why the below doesn''t work?
* I have a "created_by" column in my create table in the dB
* I have a "before_create" line, which definitely gets called
* I tried a few different ways to set the "created_by" attribute in the
model but it doesn''t seem to work, i.e. doesn''t appear in the database

help me understand association attributes
I have a model with a belongs_to association. The first model is called
Thing and the associated model is User. I''m attempting to assign the user to
the thing.
To accomplish this I used a before_save method, like this:
class Thing < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :created_by, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key =>
"created_by_user_id"

Validation with has_many
I have two problems. I have a comment that has_many uploads. Before
saving the comment, I want to be sure that the upload(s) has passed
validation, but I also need to validate in other ways. For example, I
do not want to save the comment if there is no comment or upload. Or, I
do not want to save the comment if the image has been uploaded

Default value for model var
I know this has got to be a really dumb question, but here goes anyway.
I''ve got a model with an associated table. One of the columns in the
table is ''date_created'', which I want to be set to the date/time each
row was added to the table.
Seems to me that setting this in the initialize method for the model
would be the right thing to do,...

AR many-many join tables - can they have created_on, updated_on ?
Hello all,
I''m creating a many-many join table between ''homes'' and ''users''. Can it
contain created_on? will AR update created_on, updated_on on this table?
CREATE homes_users (
home_id int not null,
user_id int not null,
created_on datetime null,
updated_on datetime null
)
Thanks for your advice!

created_on & updated_on - helper to display date only
All,
My initial list is rather busy. I would like to shorten the
created_on and updated_on fields to just display the date, not the
time. Best wold be a simple 12/28/05 type of presentation.
I''ve found the format helpers in rdoc. (ie.
distance_of_time_in_words_to_now ), but none seem to be what I''m
looking for.
How do I control the date format of a timestamp field?
Thanks

created_on in HABTM table getting parent dates
All of my HABTM tables receive the parent created_on/last_update_on
dates whenever a record is inserted into these join tables. I don''t
have any defaults in the database or anything else populating these
tables. I assumed rails would populate these automagically. Is there
something that needs to be done to get this to populate with the correct
current timestamp instead of

Easy created_at/created_on question
I have an easy question that I can''t seem to find an answer to. When I have
a table with a created_at or created_on column I''ve read that Rails will
automatically update these because they are "magic" column names. I assumed
that since this was all supposed to be done in the background that these
columns would not show up in the standard forms that are created by the

Greetings,
This, I hope, is a simply answered question.
Based on Agile Web Development with Rails (depot application), I''m

an admin side to this, so there''s always authentication.
Part of the info record (member) is changed_by and changed_at which I
automatically want updated. Changed_at looks after

ActiveRecord and SQL Server
Hi all,
I am exploring using RoR for a new project but have run into a
problem with ActiveRecord and SQL Server''s timestamp datatype.
We have a NOT NULL timestamp column in a table and ActiveRecord keeps
trying to update it, which promptly causes it to blow up. I have
tried making the value NULL for insert and update in the model, but
SQL Server doesn''t like that

model mixin module madness
If I have several models which exhibit the same functionality, it seems
makes sense to create a mixin, ''include'' it in each model and save
myself some work and repeated code.
Where can I define a module which will be available to all models? I
can''t seem to find a documented place for them.
Alternatively, is there a Rails-standard way of achieving the effect?
