attr_accessible on some properties + attr_protected on others makes class 'open-by-default'
(I posted this as a bug in GitHub (https://github.com/rails/rails/issues/7018), but then someone there told me I should post it here, so here it is.) If you set attr_accessible on some properties in an ActiveRecord-descended class, and then attr_protected on others - the class becomes ''default-open'' - if any properties are missed or added later, they will be accessible by

Soundpoint IP 430 -- discontinued.
Hey, all. I'm in the middle of a rollout, and just learned that the SoundPoint IP 430 -- my favorite mid-range phone -- has been discontinued. The heir apparent is the SoundPoint IP 450 -- for a low, low, low $130 more/handset. AND it doesn't look as nice. Ouch. Does anyone have any recommendations -- Polycom or otherwise -- for a good-quality, mid-range, two-line SIP phone (with good

NUT, USB, OpenIndiana
I'm about to deploy en OpenIndiana (the heir of OpenSolaris) box as my main iSCSI backend. However, all attempts at getting NUT 2.6 to work with my usbhid-ups cyberpower has resulted in the driver going down with a segmentation fault. Is there a known problem with nut+usb+openindiana (opensolaris), or am I just doing something wrong? //Svein --

scp with openssh on the server side and $PATH.
Hi! When I try to use scp from or to a machine that runs openssh-1.2pre16 on Debian Linux, I keep getting the error message "scp: command not found". Executing "ssh this-host echo \$PATH" yields "/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:" which might be set in config.h. sshd is installed to /usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/sbin, scp to /usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/bin;

smbspool to Windows 2000 Server: "ERRgeneral opening remote file"
Hi, I am trying to print from my Debian unstable Notebook to a printer that is connected to a Windows 2000 Server. Question: coding protected methods
Apologies first, because I need to ramp up on Ruby and coding Ruby in Rails, however it''s my 3rd day with this beast :) so I''m asking : When I added protected methods to the model before it was like: protected method.................... end Would this be a valid way to write a protected method as well ?: attr_protected :column1, :column2 Perhaps this particular call

Any fast way to update non-indexed fields?
Hi, >From looking at Ruby sources it seems that every update method deletes and reinserts documents. It makes sense if indexed fields are changed but what if it is not the case? Formating Float ActiveRecord attributes in text inputs
I have AMOUNT field that ActiveRecord maps to Float. Then I use text_field helper to generate text inputs on forms. Helper takes model object and attribute name and does not provide any formatting abilities, thus 2.40 is shown as 2.4 which is fine with floats but does not look good with currency. I have worked around this issue by adding amount_f attribute to the model that returns formatted

set_default_values rocket science - continuing after_initialize/after_find misfeature
Just starting a new thread so that it''s easy to follow. I just submitted a patch at trac to add a new class method called "set_default_values" ( not a great name I think ), which lets you do all kinds of crazy stuff with setting default values. This ticket is at http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/9093 and example pastie is at http://pastie.caboo.se/81925 It also lets you make

Specify attr_protected
This is kind of a two part question. Question One: I want to be sure that an Order model is protecting sensitive attributes from mass assignment. The example looks like this: describe Order do it "should protect total attribute from mass assignment" do @order = Order.new(:total => 0.05) @order.total.should_not == 0.05 end end And the code to implement it: class Order
