Why can''t I use a session? (Symbol as array index)
Hi All
I can''t for the life of me see what is wrong with this. Maybe it''s cause
it''s midnight...
I want to put some data in a session and I have some code like this:
class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
model :mything
def ApplicationController.chosen_thing
session[:chosen_thing] ||= MyThing.defaultThing
end
end
So whenever I try to

Re: Help with RoR partial views
Your partial uses a simple form_for(@product) call. By default that will do a POST to the products/create action, which if it''s successful, does a redirect to products/show/<<id for the new product>> (see the create method in your products_controller.rb file).
My advice is to just play around w/rails for a bit & get used to its conventions before you try to bend it to

Rubygems Issues
I recently upgraded a server''s rubygems from 0.9.0 to 1.2.0. Upon
doing so, one of our apps that uses soap4r thinks all the security
certificates it sees are invalid (see Error 1 below). I tried
reverting to 0.9.0, but anything that uses rubygems crashes now (see
Error 2 below). If anyone could help me solve either problem, that
would be great. Ideally, I''d like to run the latest

Hi,
I am working thru the Ruby for rails book. On page 30 David Black
talks about running erb from the command line i.e. $ erb erbdemo.rb
just as you would a normal ruby prog ($ ruby erbdemo.rb) but when I
try to do this I get command not found. How do I make this work? I am

A unit test that should pass
Hi, I wonder why this unit test fails.
The model :
class Article < ActiveRecord::Base

The test :
def test_validate
@article.title = nil
@article.excerpt = nil
assert !@article.save
assert_equal 2, !@article.errors.count
end
!@article.errors.count returns

Cannot use "Application" as a model?
I tried creating an application that has an "Application" model. This
seems to collide with the "ApplicationController" defined in
application.rb.
For example...
rails appgoboom
cd appgoboom
script/generate scaffold Application name:string
script/console

Monkey patching a gem (rails_admin, with Rails 3)
Hi.
I''m trying to monkey patch the rails_admin gem.
First, I tried to add a file in config/initializers containing:
RailsAdmin::MainController.class_eval do
def get_sort_hash
CODE HERE...
end
end
It was only loaded once, and then the method from the gem was always
executed instead of mine.
I also tried to add the code in lib/ with the correct line in
config/application.rb to load

0.10.0, Routes and Query strings
So I made the leap to 0.10.0 but I can not get routes to play nice
with query strings...
I have this mapping in my routes.rb file
map.connect '':controller/:action/:id'', :controller => ''main_controller''
This is all cool and everything works fine http://www.siteroot.com/
maps to http://www.siteroot.com/main_controller/index
But when I add a query string to

Testing misc methods in ApplicationController
I''m already successfully testing before_filters in application_controller
courtesy of this blog post:
http://www.movesonrails.com/articles/2008/01/23/spec-ing-your-application-controller
However, i can;''t work out how to test the sort of method that is added to
application_controller so that all controllers can use it. It must be
something simple that i''m doing

Rails3 pre and protect_from_forgery
I''ve almost entirely converted a rails 2.3.5 app to 3pre. I''m having
some trouble with protect_from_forgery. I had protect_from_forgery set
in application_controller.rb, but run some uploadify ajax stuff in one
of my controllers, where I had protect_from_forgery, :except
=> :add_file set.
In rails 3 I''m getting ActionController::InvalidAuthenticityToken on

making something available application wide
I''d like to display a banner on every page. Ultimately I''ll be tweaking
which banner is displayed via different controllers but initially I''d
just like to set a single banner application wide and display it in my

I''ve got a BannerAdvert model, simple. If I''m in my welcome controller

Stack level too deep with actionmailer
HI,
Anytime I try to send emails with actionmailer I get a stack level too
deep SystemStackError. There were several other posts related to stack
overflows, but none of them invovled actionmailer. I''m using some
plugins acts_as_taggable, acts_as_ferret, rails 1.1.4, actionmailer
1.2.3. Here is my full stack trace.
Any ideas?

before_filter application => exclude some other controllers
Hello again,
It''s possible to use before_filter in the application_controller, and
exclude for some methods from other controllers ?
i have a before_filter in application_controller that checks if the user
is logged, if the time hasn''t expired, ... and I want to exclude some
methods of this check, like the login. This ''login'' belongs to other
controller.
