Getting Index When Using render :partial
I''m using a web service to retrieve an array of results to a search
and a render :partial to display those results to the user, while at
the same time putting the results into the session. Is there a way
for my _book.rhtml file to have access to the index of the result
currently being displayed, like each_with_index makes available to
its block? This would allow me to have the

actioncontroller sans view
just wondering if theres a more idiomatic way to avoid the
`assert_existance_of_template_file'' error than passing an empty block to
render :update (or hacking up the actionview::base class). ive tried
various things like render :template => false/nil etc and havent seem to
found a magic trick..
i realize most times a controller would want a view but various cases

How to save output "render :action=>:any_action" to a file?
I need to save the output of my rails app to a file. i.e. instead of
rendering a page when using "render :action=>:any_action" i want the
output to be saved to a file.
Anyone got any ideas?

Best practice for showing errors AND updating list
Morning/Afternoon/Evening All,
This is my first post to the ruby message board so if my request is
better suited to another location just let me know,
The problem I keep coming up against is with a listing of objects and
updating that list via AJAX (for arguments we are talking about a list
of users).
As it stands I can currently submit a form, and update the list

Setting layout template in .rhtml

Render a view from console
Hello!
In my application I''m trying to render a view from a class in /lib
folder. I have found that it''s very similar to render a view from
console. So, I have tried different methods:
>> string = ActionView::Base.new.render( :inline => ''works'', :layout => false )
=> "works"
>> string = ActionView::Base.new.render( :template =>

Render -> ActionController -> Render -> ...
Hi Guys,
ActiveRecord is great for being able to drill down through many tables.
I often locate the very "top" record, and have a render :action =>
"show" display that top record.
Often I want to drill down like:
@kingdom.phylums.classes.orders.each do |order|
render :partial => "order/show"
end
But, depending on the user who is logged in, they see a

let me introduce myself briefly - I am a student at OvG University

Invoke render multiple times
I need to invoke render() multiple times. This is not to render a
response to the browser but to get the result of render() and put it in
files. Is there another way to do it if it''s not possible to do it
directly with render()?
Btw, what''s the reasoning behind only allowing render() to be called
once a request?

Question about variable assignments/scoping after render call
I''ve got a question about how variables are made available to templates. We
have a test that looks something like this:
def test_variable_assigned
xhr :get, :do_stuff, :id => 1
assert_not_nil assigns(:thing)
end
And our app code looks like this:
class SuperClass < ActionController
def do_stuff
@parent_model = ParentModel.find(params[:id])
render :template

Re: Getting Index When Using render :partial (Benjamin Stiglitz)
Thanks for the suggestion, Ben. This seems an excellent approach to
the problem, except that I''d been under the impression that one could
only call render once. If you call it multiple times as the
each_with_index loop iterates, are the results just combined
automatically? How does that work?
Thanks!

Need architectural help avoiding render :component
I''m writing a CMS/portal system, and I''m having trouble coming up with
a way of routing requests that feels right without using render
:component (which I''ve read should never be used). The system works
like this:
Each user has a set of "pages" which are shown as navigation tabs on
the page. The user may rename, reorder, add, or delete pages for a

Suggestion: render filters
Will not be useful functionality similar
https://github.com/shell/rails3_before_render ? Something like
ActionController filters but not before action. Filters before render. See
also http://www.perfectline.ee/blog/ruby-on-rails-before-render-filter,
http://penkin.co.uk/rails3_before_render-plugin/. And don''t you know gem
for this? Thanks.

render not able to locate template in publisher
Hi guys,
I have a publisher called UserPublisher setup in models directory of
my app. The reason I have it in a model is because its then possible
for me to invoke publisher methods in after_callbacks of my other
models, just the way we do it for ActionMailer.
My problem is that when I try to update a users profile specifying
location of the view template as a paramater to "profile"

Multiple view types for a single action?
Is it possible to have more than one kind of view for a specific action,
for example an .rhtml and a .rjs file to handle the view for the same
action?
I suspect not, but this makes me wonder if there a way to call the .rjs
file from within the .rhtml so the statements within it get executed?
Thanks,
