Rails'' send_file, Mongrel, and *gasp* memory
I''ve had a right fun few days at work trying to figure out why our Rails
app (which isn''t under very heavy load) kept eating memory and bringing
our server to our knees. Eventually I traced it to send_file (which was
in a way a relief as it wasn''t down to my coding ;) -- every time a user
started downloading, the memory consumed by the app would jump, and

Offering downloads only to registered users
I''m writing an app for a blood exam center, where people can go and check
the results without going physically there. The customers log in the system
and a pdf download is offered to them. The downloads though will not be
stored in the db but in the filesystem.
How can I allow people to download files only if they''re authorised? I
obviously can''t store all the files in

ActionController#send_file
Looking at the code for ActionController#send_file I see that it is
using ruby to send the file contents. Linux supports a sendfile() OS
call. The implementation of Linux sendfile() is extremely fast and
very CPU efficient, far faster than what can be done in user space.
Does Windows support a sendfile() equivalent call? I haven''t been
working with ruby long enough to know how it handles

Where to place uploaded files for later download?
Hi there,
I am working in a RoR application which allows certain users
to upload files. Currently I store these files
in a directory called "files". This directory is located in
the RoR application directory:
rails/rails_application/files
So users don''t have access to them.
Now I want users to be able to download some of these files
(they will search based on some

Forcing FCGI at dreamhost
Greetings all,
I''ve got an app in production at dreamhost, but I can''t seem to force
FCGI on it. I have it enabled for the domain in the admin panel, have
checked the file permissions in my public folder, and tried firing the
scripts from the command line.
When firing either dispatch.cgi, or dispatch.fcgi from the command line,
I get a 500 internal server error on BOTH.

more fcgi problems on apache
I''m having tons of problems with fcgi on apache2. The app didn''t
crash over the weekend when it wasn''t used. I ran it this morning and
it was fine. It''s an inhouse app so it wasn''t used for 3 days over the
weekend. It did however crash today. Does this sound like a bad fcgi
setup or just a very buggy fcgi/Apache combo?

Mod_fcgid question: is this normal?
I installed mod_fcgid yesterday. It works great for my Rails
app. But in my fastcgi.crash.log is constantly get this output:
[23/May/2006:08:12:07 :: 29040] starting
[23/May/2006:08:18:48 :: 29040] asked to terminate immediately
[23/May/2006:08:18:48 :: 29040] terminated by explicit exit
[23/May/2006:08:22:03 :: 29391] starting
It also shows up in the Apache error log. Is this normal? Or

A nasty evening with dispatch.fcgi
Hello all. Time for an all night installation
campfire (no pun intended) story.
I just helped a customer migrate from a single box
to a 5 box system.
2 Lighty
2 FCGI
1 DB
Everything went quite well. I scripted everything
so it would be easy to add more boxes in the future.
3 scripts, one for each box type above.
Then came time to get the site working. :-)
Lighty came up easily.
The DB came up

I can''t get mod_fcgid to work
Hi,
I just installed mod_fcgid on my apache2 server.
When I try to load my application I get an
"Application error - Rails application failed ..." message.
In my Apache2 error-log it says:
Premature end of script headers dispatch.fcgi
mod_fcgid process /data/www/app/dispacth.fcgi exit (communication
error),
terminated by calling exit(), return code 1
Any help with this would be

setup a staging site?
Hi, i''m wondering how to setup a staging site for my RoR app. Right now i
run webrick on my laptop to develop, then i svn commit my changes to the
production server. However i need to make my development environment
available to others and not just for me on my laptop.
I have RoR setup on a hosted vps server which runs in production
environment. Its on apache 1.3 and mysql. How can i

Tunneling in capistrano twice
Hi there,
The default recipe expects you to be able to access your web server
directly from your local machine.
On our web server, for security purposes, it is only possible to ssh
to it through one particular ip (which is also a remote machine.)
The capistrano source is so compact and tidy it looks very hackable.
But rather than messing around I thought I''d ask first if anyone else

Premature end of script headers: dispatch.cgi
Hi
I am running ruby 1.8.4 and rails 1.0.0 with Apache 2. I made a simple
rails application called demo and also created a controller called say
and an action called hello which is working fine using webrick. To run
it under Apache I created a symlink demo1 which is linked to the
demo/public directory. If I run it using www.example.com/demo1 then I
get the "Rails- Welcome Aboard"

uuidtools across processes
Hello,
It seems that there is a small probability of collisions among uuid''s
produced by uuidtools'' UUID.random_create() running in concurrent user
processes on a host (fcgi)? The ~2 bytes extracted from the randomized
clock_sequence make a collision unlikely.

what hardware shuld I but to manage 100k of connections per day?
I''m doing a fotolog for a company.
It''s expected to manage about 100k of connections per day and about 1500
concurrents connections.
What hardware should I buy to manage those numbers of connections?
I''m planning to use slackware + lighttpd + fastcgi, but perhaps we will
have to reuse some scripts in php, in that case I would use slackware +
apache + mod_php + fastcgi

Frustrated with RoR environment splintering
Why isnt the RoR community focusing on robust and scalable mod_perl style of
Apache environment, rather then splintering all over the place with
lighthttp, mongrel, WEBrick, SCGI, fcgi, etc???
Its frustrating as someone who is trying to migrate to RoR.
Its very unlikely I would ever get a contract to work on any webserver
except Apache, so it would seem logicaly to focus all our efforts to

Sending files through send_file or by httpd?
If I were to serve files, would send_file via rails be slow?
I think they will be 200mb avi files.
Would it be better to send them via /public ?
But I would like to track the clicks on each file - which makes me think
that I can''t serve them out on /public as those clicks will not go
through my application.
Any help or suggestions?

Mongrel HTTP Library 0.2.0 (Fast And RubyForgified)
Hi Everyone,
I''m happy to announce the 0.2.0 release of Mongrel -- the fastest
HTTP 1.1 library Ruby has yet.
http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/ -- ruby docs lame page.
http://rubyforge.org/projects/mongrel/ -- project page.
Special thanks to Tom Copland for setting up my RubyForge goodness,
and to Why for kicking in time to get the Camping examples up to snuff.

[OT] building fastcgi
Following the instructions on Hivelogic, everything works flawlessly on my
Powerbook until I do the ''sudo gem install fcgi.
I''m getting no-definition errors all over the place. Any thoughts how to
resolve this?
Example of errors:
No definition for fcgi_s_accept
No definition for fcgi_s_each
No definition for fcgi_s_each
No definition for fcgi_s_iscgi
