Newbie - Help Please
I am just getting off the ground with RoR. (actually just walking out to
the runway)
I want to setup a development / test environment as close to the
production environment as possible except for OS (Win XP for Dev, Linux
for Prod).
I have Apache, MySQL, PhP installed and operating close enough to the
production environment that all the PhP stuff I''ve done in the past
seems to work

Your RoR 1.1 Adoption Prediction?
What is the likelyhood that major inexpensive webhosts like godaddy,
bluehost, etc. will upgrade to RoR 1.1? Is this going to be like PHP 5
where it has to percolate for a year or more before it becomes widly
available? Your thoughts?
Along the same lines... is it possible to adopt some of the new improved
Ajax / javascript capabilities without actually upgrading the ruby
installation?

Windows Deployment on Unix
Hi!
Can anyone give me some pointers on how to deploy a Rails application
developed under Windows with RadRails at a Unix Host (Textdrive).
I?ve heard of switch tower, but have never used it. Does it have a routine
to convert my Windows Carriage Returns/Line Feeds to Unix style? Is there
something else I should know?
Also, if somebody can point me to a good tutorial on setting up Rails to

RadRails Broke with 1.8.4 / 1.1
I''ve been using the radrails eclipse plugin with ruby 1.0 & Rails 1.8.2
up until this morning... I just installed Ruby 1.8.4 (one-click
installer rc1) and Rails 1.1. Now the rails eclipse plugin does not
seem to be aware of how to run ruby and has lost the ability to start
the webrick server. I''m sure it''s a simple configuration issue but the

qestion on cmd scale
Dear list,
I am starting a new project in cmdscale, and I have a question
regarding distance matrix and covariance matrix. Can anyone help me in
this? I sent this message so many times but always bounced with no
further explanation.
(1) Can I use covariance as my distance matrix?
(2) Any good reference in this matter?
(3) is the approach that I wrote below valid?
Thank you,
ilham

[LLVMdev] Qestion about running LLVM
Hi,
I'm a newbie and just installed LLVM on a Linux box. I followe
"The LLVM Getting Started Guide" on the web and have some trouble
on the section "An Example Using the LLVM Tool Chain". When I compile
the simple hello.c program with "llvmgcc hello.c -o hello", the system
complains -- gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `gccas': Permission

geolocation db?
I''m currently planning a social app in Rails that relies on being able to
see how far you are from everyone else.
It''s my intention to store rough geo-coordinates as part of the sign up
process. My intention is to capture their zipcode or postal code, and then
be able to query a webservice once for that data. It''s also possible that
there might be a database or even

Packages - a great resource, but hard to find the right one.
Fellow Rers,
Please forgive me if I have posted this to the wrong R list serve.
Over the course of the years that I have used R and participated in this list server, I have noted a large number of questions and answers that direct people to specific packages. The multitude of packages is one of the great strengths of R. Unfortunately there is no (or at least I am not aware of) any single source

Searchable Archives of this list
Is there a searchable archive of this list? Did I overlook something
obvious? I can find the archives, but short of downloading all the
monthly gzips and building my own searchable database, it seems my
only other option is to go month by month looking at subjects and
hope to stumble on what I'm after.
Does anyone maintain a public searchable version of the archives?

RoR data models ( extreme newbie question)
Sorry for asking this but I am keen to get on and build an app based on
RoR and have had a look around at FAQa and the like with no immediate
sucess.
What I am looking for is an explainantion of the rules/requirements for
table/index/coulumn names with RoR. RoR appears to have a set of
expected naming conventions which it would appear you can over ride but
it would seems a hell of a lot

Handling errors - incorrect value entered in url...
I have many "edit" actions in my project. If the url is like
http://localhost/project/3/edit and someone enters
http://localhost/project/3333333/edit the edit action will fails because
it cannot find a project with id of 3333333.
To combat this I am adding to every action like edit:
rescue
redirect_to :action => ''index''

SSHD Feature Request
With the increased number of "brute force" login attempts against port 22, I am concerned that an intruder may actually stumble accross a valid user/pass combination. To combat this, I would like to request an sshd_config option that would cause the running sshd parent process to keep track of login failures by IP address. If there are more than X number of login failures for a
