Production environment for Rails on Win32, anyone interested for a binary release?
Hi all, as part of adopting Rails in my company I had to go through
the hassle of setting up a Rails production environment on Win32
system since we mostly use MS SQL as our database back end and also
because we mostly dealing with customers who become green-blue-purple
as soon as you mention Unix/Linux and run for the door.
I also need to mention that most of our web applications are internal

Why not mod_ruby?
Hi!
I''ve understood that the mod_ruby apache module is not recommended for
running Ruby on Rails applications. But I haven''t found any information
as to why that is so. Please enlighten me. And could you point me to the
(currently) prefered production environment. (That can handle both RoR
and PHP sites).
Thank you and best regards

scgi?? do i need it for ruby?
This might be obvious to everyone but it is something that i haven''t
been able to find an answer to. Do I need to have either
scgi/fastcgi/cgi running on either lighttpd/apache for ruby scripts to
work? If yes, why? I have installed the scgi server and i can get the
service to run, i have also installed the following mod_fastcgi/2.4.2
mod_ruby/1.2.4 Ruby/1.8.2(2004-12-25) mod_scgi,

Mongrel 0.3.4 -- Win32 Gems/Better CGIWrapper
Hello Everyone,
Today''s Mongrel is the first release to sport spiffy pre-built win32 gems.
This comes thanks to Wilson Bilkovich donating some Rakefile magic that does
the stuff for me. Everyone who uses win32 should send Wilson a thank-you
since without him you''d be a victim of my laziness for at least a few more
weeks.
People who are testing and trying Mongrel out should

Deployment question: running multiple applications using symlinks, what does my lighttp.conf look like?
Hi,
I''m looking to run several installation of a rails app. Each one has
certain unique elements, like database.yml some and some css stuff,
possible some templates as well.
I''ve set this up like
/w/sites/clienta
/w/sites/clientb
/w/sites/clientc
Inside these directories there will be mostly symlinks to:
/apps/myapp
Urls for these apps will be:
http://clienta.example.com

How do you scale dovecot for good performance with Roundcube webmailer in front? (hitting limits without exhausting resources)
Good day,
I am currently setting up/debugging a webmailer-only setup using Roundcube (latest version) with Dovecot (2.3.20, latest as of now).
Generally speaking the setup performs OK, I wrote a JMeter Roundcube script to test the Roundcube. This includes actions like listing mails and fetching them. I am hitting a somehow dubious limit of 600 req/s though. (This includes all kinds of HTTP calls

Instant Rails on Win XP SP2
I am trying to run instant rails on windows xp SP2. I can get the
cookbook and typo sample sites to work with webrick but not with scgi.
When i click the start with scgi i get a blank dos window and typing
www.mycookbook.com returns
Firefox can''t establish a connection to the server at
www.mycookbook.com.
This suggests that apache is not even running even though the green

sessions failing on debian apache2 fast_cgi
Hi All,
So I just pushed our rails app to our production server, but I''ve
encountered a number of problems.
Firstly the fast_cgi processes seem to be eating up a hell of a lot of
memory, at times max out our 1gig of RAM. I''ve switched back to cgi for
the moment, but independently of that sessions seem to be failing
intermitently.
The session will hold itself stable for a

Rails on Mongrel
Hi,
After following advice from you good folks, I gave mongrel a try in a
cluster design based on the example on the Mongrel website - and it
worked right out of the box which is great - and it''s very fast :)
I have got a bit stuck though. I have two MS Word files in
/public/files/. I can pull back these files no problem but it isn''t
sending a mimetype.
I think I have two

Retrieve the current controller name from a view
Hi all, I wonder if it''s possible to retrieve the current controller
name and possibly the action when you''re in a view.
i.e. I call the same template/partial view from different controllers
and I''d like to know when I''m in the view code which controller is
calling it...
Any ideas? Sorry if it''s obvious but I couldn''t find it in the doc.

Resin and RAILS
Anybody use Resin''s (http://www.caucho.com) FastCGI support with Rails?
I''m seeing performance very close (almost the same) to what I''m seeing
with Lighttpd. Nothing scientific but just a quick test using Apache''s
wb and JMeter. (Might be interesting to other Java/Rails folk or
Java/PHP/Rails folk. I have no connection to Caucho and the tests were

Running apps in subdirectories using lighty/scgi
Hi,
So thanks to Zed I was able to get lighty/scgi and a Rails app running.
I know this might not be the best place to post this, but I guessed
there may be several others with similar experiences here.
So, the following step is to have several apps each in its on
subdirectory. I tried the following to no avail:
$HTTP["url"] =~ "^/tango/" {
server.document-root =

Multiple Apps running under Lighttpd with scgi on a Windows Box ... possible?
I''ve run into a problem on one of my development machines. I''m trying to
run multiple rails apps on one dev machine that runs Windows. Problem is
that is seems that I can only run one scgi_service at a time, meaning
that only one of my apps will function at a time. Anyone know how I can
get around this, other than getting a *nix box (which I should have
soon, hopefully) ?

Help with SCGI please :(
Hi,
While learning Ruby and Rails, I decided I just as well learn Linux
along the way... It''s been fun, but I''m stuck at one of those
exasperating moments... I hope someone can help me :)
I installed Ruby 1.8.4 on Fedora Core 4, then Rails, then lighty, and
then SCGI.
I used yum to install lighty... and it already comes with mod_scgi.
I created my first application in

Difficult process of restarting SCGI, Lighttpd, Apache, sessions
I''ve managed to get Rails working using Apache->Lighttpd->SCGI. Restarting everything is really
difficult. This appears to be the process:
- stop apache
- stop lighttpd
- stop scgi
- make sure scgi still isn''t running (it sometimes does) - if it is, kill it
- delete all session files (they often cause permission errors)
- start scgi
- start apache
- start lighttpd
- cross

Recommend server for developing RoR on win
Hi all,
can you recommend me which web server config to use for developing rails
on windows machine. I tried webrick, which is good but it''s annoying
because console window is in taskbar for every site running and it have
to be started manually. Apache with CGI is to slow and using FastCGI on
the other side brings me lot of problems, like randomly not working RoR
sites.
Any help is
